Philadelphia where the fans are always classy

On the bright side, at least the lady wasn't given the projectile vomit treatment.

This is generally a positive community, so I'm not sure why its considered good form to be pissing on the hometown of several forum members. Every town has its assholes. Until the census bureau determines that Philly has a greater percentage than other towns, you're just falling prey to tired old media-driven stereotypes.

I am from central jersey originally and having attended a few hundred games at the Vet, I can honestly say they are not media driven stereotypes. I was in the park when the crowd rained garbage on the field when Randy Lerch gave up 5 runs against the Cardinals in an extra inning of a 0-0 game. Personally I find it humorous that Philly fans so consistently live up to their billing. Not that Oakland fans are any better, full fledged riots in the parking lots after night games are certainly no picnic.

Your offense to my amusement is duly noted.

Yeah, like when Osama Bin Laden was killed and the entire stadium spontaneously erupted in USA chants on national television. Oh, wait, that doesn't fit into your preconceived stereotypes, so lets not mention that.

Or when Phillies fans pummeled a Mets fans in the parking lot, leaving him brain damaged and paralyzed. Oh wait, that was actually was Dodgers fans beating a Giants fan, but it doesn't fit into your preconceived stereotypes, so lets not mention that.

But they did throw garbage on the field at Randy Lerch! My god! And while we're at it, let's also not mention:

* In 1986, a Yankees fan threw a knife at the Angels' Wally Joyner, grazing his arm.
* In 2010, some Yankees fans in the stands harassed the wife of then-Ranger Cliff Lee.
* In 2002, two White Sox fans jumped out of the stands and attacked Kansas City Royals first-base coach Tom Gamboa.
* A year later at a White Sox game, a fan ran onto the field and tried to tackle an umpire. Later that year, Cubs fans threw a cellphone that hit San Diego third baseman Sean Burroughs.
* In 1999, Denver fans threw snowballs with batteries in them at Raiders players.
* In 2003, Oakland fans hit the Rangers' Carl Everett in the head with a cellphone. Later that year in Oakland, another Athletics fan threw a cherry bomb from the upper deck and burned an 8-year-old boy.
* In 2003, a Giants fan was fatally shot by a Dodgers fan in an argument in a Dodger Stadium parking lot.
* In 2001, Browns fans threw beer bottles onto the field to protest a referee's call. Police had to escort the refs from the stadium.
* In 2009, Dallas Mavericks fans poured beer on Kenyon Martin's mother and Carmelo Anthony's fiancée.
* In 2014, Giants fans rioted after the team's World series win.

But my god, trash thrown on the field! The humanity!
Your offense to my amusement is duly noted.
The fact that you don't mind offending members of this community -- of which I've been part since 2009 -- is certainly quite telling.

Alright, guys. You each made your point.

Let's lock this one and put it away before things escalate any further.

Mike, it was meant as a little good natured ribbing. The fact that you have gone so far out of your way to turn it into a pissing contest speaks for itself. I'll try to remember that I can't have fun here, lest I offend thee.

My son & I were actually at that game - Bonds jersey et al, and we hustled out of there promptly, not making eye contact with anyone other than the rental car - man that place is a dump! We were horrified to hear what happened, especially since we had walked through that portion of the parking lot. Dodger Stadium - been there, done that, never again.

Bryan Stow, the man beaten, is, for the record, not paralyzed, but definitely will have life challenges and is actually making slooooooow progress. Perhaps the warmest part of the story is the work that Tim Flannery, now former-3B coach of the Giants is doing to raise money for Bryan's cause. Tireless. Stow even threw out the first pitch at a San Jose Giants (A) game this spring. Arguably the biggest criminals? The insurance companies - right? I know...

Well, it really was far calmer than you see in other cities, and no where near as ridiculously out of control and destructive as those in Oakland over national issues that happen 1,000's of miles away - why people have to destroy and steal others property in protest of things not related to the individuals I'll never know...

I'll agree with Kevin - this has gotten out of control. We all know that sometimes things said come out far more personal than meant, and we all have variable degrees of humor. There's not a soul here who goes out of their way to be cruel. Some of us are a little rough around the edges, but that's what makes us unique, our community unique, and our country unique!!

If I over reacted, that's probably because this is the second time Matt has gone out of way to highlight bad behavior by a Phillies fan. And what bugs me about both threads are not the posts but the titles: "Phillies fans hit new low" "Philadelphia where the fans are always classy." The actions in question were by one person, or by a few, but Matt when you write titles like that you're including members of this very community. You're saying the entire city's fanbase is like that.

And we're not. I've been going to Phillies games since the 1970s; I take my wife, my daughter, and my daughter's friends there every season, and I've never encountered anything but friendly and passionate fans. I've never had a single bad experience.

You want to have fun? I'm all for it. I have no problem making threads about a fan who was a jerk. Just don't make sweeping generalizations that we are all.

Can someone help me out here? I've searched high and I've searched low, and try as I might I can't find reference to these "Phillies" or any other teams since before that whole MLB thing collapsed in the mid-2000s.

 :D :) :geek: !+) :-B  8) }:-)
