Red Sox catching
Loved watching Christian Vazquez catch, but he had Tommy John surgery in the spring and is gone for the year. He is a great defensive catcher, but not great with the bat yet. Ryan Hannigan (another defensive catcher), signed to back up Vazquez this spring became the regular, a great break for the Mass native. Now he breaks his hand and is on the DL. No disrespect to those two gentlemen, but it could be the best thing that could have happened in that it forced the Sox to bring up Prospect Blake Swihart. If he's ready, Swihart may grab this job and never look back. I have had the pleasure of seeing him play quite a few games in AA and have been very impressed with his game. He's only 23 years old, and the Red Sox don't like to bring up guys early, but here's hoping Swihart is here to stay. Keep an eye on this kid.

Re: Red Sox catching
He's an interesting guy, having converted to the position. He's had nearly 300 minor league games, though, so it seems like a decent decision. If he does stick in the majors at 23, and if he stays healthy, he could well be a huge name in a few years.

I called him Ryan "Hand"igan.
Dude leaves his right hand in harms way. His own fault.

Re: Red Sox catching
Hannigan's was taking a beating recently. In spite of it all he never could keep that right hand behind his back and now's it going to cost him. Too bad as he was doing well. Leon was quietly shuffled to the background for a while. Should be interesting if Swihart will keep him there. Not a bad time if you have to rush him. There really aren't great expectations for the club this year and frankly the pitching is going to get the focus when it all goes south.
