Ohhh, I get it. This is one of those "fantasy league" things, right? We pretend the MLB didn't collapse in 2007 and then we base our predictions on what who we think might be the winners, theoretically, as if the MLB still existed. I can get into that kind of fantasy projection.

So, had the MLB not collapsed ...

Toronto would finish first in the AL East because steroids are not illegal in Canada, and if the MLB survived, it would be a league of steroid junkies.
Detroit would finish first in the AL Central because the city has its own pipeline to Canadian drugs. You can just walk them across the bridge.
The San Jose A's (formerly Oakland) would finish first in the AL West because their new city, new ballpark and new (functioning) clubhouse bathrooms would inspire the hormone-driven team to new heights of productivity.

Washington would finish first in the NL East because the Supreme Court will finally rule (after 50 years) that transferring the original Washington Senators to Minneapolis constituted interstate commerce, and if baseball took part in interstate commerce then the Sherman Antitrust Act would apply to baseball, thereby voiding the old Court's exemption and threatening the reserve clause. The MLB, fearing for its life should the reserve clause be stricken, complied by returning the Twins to Washington, giving the city 2 major league lineups. The very best of both teams formed a new super power club that swept to 132 wins.

Not that it mattered, since everyone else in the NL played second fiddle to the new Washington Nationals/Senators/Twins franchise, but in the NL Central the Cubs made the playoffs, largely because the city of Chicago condemned all the apartment buildings surrounding The Friendly Confines and built the newest most technologically advanced stadium in the majors. Among the new gizmos installed in the scoreboard was an electronic eye designed to flash the catcher's signals to the batter. It wasn't until the playoffs that the system was detected, and by then the Cubs had swept past their NL Central competitors and had to face the juggernaut squad from Washington.

And in the lonely NL West, the SF Giants rehired their former hero, turned accused druggie, Barry Bonds to be their hitting instructor. Bonds, frustrated when no one on the team could grasp the simple physics of his perfect swing, told manager Bruce Boche to put him in the lineup. Fueled by a new generation of PEDs, 40 year old Bonds smashed 88 homeruns to lead the Giants to the pennant.

The playoffs were a disappointment in both leagues. In the NL, the Washington Nationals/Senators/Twins scored 30 runs in the first game against the wild card winner Los Angeles. They swept that series and then humbled the reBo(u)nded Giants in 4 straight as well. Bonds homered in each game, but the Washington all-stars outhomered Bonds 8-4.

In the AL, two hormone-fueled squads lumbered to the plate and blasted balls like it was Homerun Derby. No pitcher lasted more than an inning as the sluggers combined for 61 homeruns in the 7-game series. In the end, the Tigers lost by forfeit when they ran out of pitchers in the 9th inning of the 7th game, after using several non-pitcher players to throw the equivalent of batting practice to the Toronto lineup.

Television ratings for the playoffs dipped to record lows, and the MLB, once again in financial straits, decided to cancel the World Series rather than lose money. Several Toronto and Washington players joined forces to create the most prodigious barnstorming lineup ever, and spent the latter weeks of October and all of November carrying their fence-busting show to the warmer climes: central Africa, India, Malaysia, and two exciting demonstration games before the largest assemblage of penguins in history on the rocky shore of Little America, Antarctica.

Is that Tribe getting some love here, or is the AL Central that bad?

I'd love to see another season in the 90-win range, but that seems absolutely impossible to me.

I'm not even sure at this point whether Justin Masterson is here opening day.
