Interesting 2010-11 offseason happenings

#1 Post by John »

I've had my first chance to look over the transaction wire and financial report this morning. A few interesting things jump out at me:
  • Not surprised to see Anthony Cox void his option year. He really had a nice walk year. Now the question is: Was he just playing for a big contract?
  • He'll be 36 next season, but I've got to think someone will pony up for Júlio Rodríguez if Gloucester doesn't resign him now that he's opted out of his option year.
  • What a monumental collapse for Alberto Benítez, and just like that he goes from productive player to retiree at 35. Why do I get the feeling West Virginia isn't sorry to have his pending $6.5M 2011 salary off the books?
  • I've got to imagine the bean counters in Kentucky, Tempe and Yuma are doing cartwheels on their way to cash their revenue sharing checks.
  • Meanwhile, no team got hit with a bigger revenue sharing bill than the Aurora Borealis. Aurora had some cash on hand to absorb the blow so they won't feel the effects this year, but the future Aurora GM isn't going to have the luxury of sitting on a pile of money; he's going to have to devise a better strategy than I did for putting cash to use before it's lost. And you know what? Good. Difficult decisions and circumstances are what make this game so much fun. 8)

Revenue checks are what Tempe has been waiting for. I like this brand of socialism in PEBA. Marx would be proud

I can't explain what happened to Benitez, but the thrill of having him retire almost makes up for the fact that we took a hit in "Fan Loyalty." That's what rebuilding will do to you.

How does this work? Do we have this in the LRS? I think I read something about it here before....

The LRS does indeed employ revenue sharing like the PEBA does. Every team has 17% of their total revenue on the season removed subtracted from their bank account and placed into a communal pool. That pool is then divided into equivalent 1/24th shares (it will be 1/12th shares in the LRS) and redistributed to the teams. Obviously you will lose money if you paid in more than you receive back, and vice versa.

The yearly free agent sticker shock has arrived.

Armando Sotelo wants 19 mil plus over 5 years. The guy suddenly thinks he's Yoshino Miyata or something.
