2008 Season scores and status changes

#1 Post by John »

You can see your season score by going to the "Manager --> History" page. But what the heck does it mean? Good question.

The exact formula behind the computation of the season score is a mystery. However, we've learned enough to know that about more than just wins and losses. Team finances absolutely factor in, for instance; a team with a low budget will get more score for their wins than one with a high budget. Talent level and owner expectations (were you expected to rebuild or contend) seem to factor in as well, as may awards won by players and your previous season's record.

That's all well and good... but how does your season score compare to the other teams in PEBA? Well, let's have a look, shall we? NOTE: The number in parenthesis is the change from your '07 season score:
  • ARL - 44 (+12)
  • AUR - 68 (+60)
  • BAK - 58 (-7)
  • CAN - 21 (+8 )
  • CST - 33 (-23)
  • CON - 10 (-5)
  • CL - 75 (+12)
  • DUL - 15 (-11)
  • FAR - 15 (+8 )
  • FLA - 27 (+9)
  • GLO - 46 (+24)
  • KAL - 37 (-16)
  • KEN - 16 (+4)
  • LON - 13 (-10)
  • MAN - 21 (+7)
  • NJ - 53 (-33)
  • NO - 73 (+12)
  • OMA - 13 (-18 )
  • PS - 44 (-19)
  • REN - 25 (+5)
  • SA - 12 (-33)
  • TEM - 16 (+16)
  • WV - 35 (+31)
  • YUM - 7 (-10)
So what does all this mean? Absolutely nothing! Season score has no bearing on anything whatsoever. The only thing to get out of it are bragging rights. ;)

In addition to the scores, a few status changes were announced at the conclusion of the season:

Bakersfield: Fan Loyalty INCREASE to "EXTREME"
Crystal LAke: Fan Loyalty INCREASE to "SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE"
London: Fan Loyalty DROPS to "AVERAGE"

My budget went up by, um, lots of moneys. I'm starting to feel like the Yankees, as I will have another off-season of attempting to buy more wins. It is...strange? :(

Over half the teams in the league saw their budget increase. The net change in budgets was +$4,831,703. That's an enormous (if not unexpected) number.

Generally speaking I would say it's a bad thing as an increase in spending potential will usually lead to inflated player salary demands. However here it was both expected and unavoidable. Remember that we're not 2 full years removed from our inaugural season, and as anyone who's played a few OOTP solo leagues knows... first-year financials are wonky.

Expect more radical shifts in the next few seasons while the league finds its financial equilibrium. There's bound to be some inflation in the process. Hopefully the new settings coming on line shortly will curb that as much as possible.

Here's the list of budget changes from the '08 to the '09 season:
  • ARL -- $8,476,911
  • AUR -- $21,956,083
  • BAK -- $4,010,762
  • CAN -- $-6,850,133
  • CST -- $8,104,284
  • CON -- $-1,557,619
  • CL -- $19,310,485
  • DUL -- $-10,251,746
  • FAR -- $-6,435,862
  • FLA -- $11,320,682
  • GLO -- $15,895,955
  • KAL -- $-9,055,395
  • KEN -- $3,459,358
  • LON -- $-371,226
  • MAN -- $3,614,614
  • NJ -- $21,860,528
  • NO -- $15,669,871
  • OMA -- $-10,349,534
  • PS -- $10,456,721
  • REN -- $99,129
  • SA -- $-1,660,318
  • TEM -- $9,019,841
  • WV -- $15,186,839
  • YUM -- -$5,949,354

This happened to me too. I think it's because we expanded our stadiums last offseason, but AFTER the 2008 budgets had already been set--so it wasn't until now that the budget-setter was taking the anticipated income from those additional seats into account.

It's not the anticipated income, it's the actual. Your budget is the actual income taken from the prior year. If you raised prices, made more merchandise sales, had more seats to sell, etc., your budget will go up (assuming you sold those seats at those prices, etc.). Basically, you've "proved" to your owner that your team can make that much money, so s/he increases your budget for the following year.

I save the owner a ton of money on payroll, increase wins, acquire prospects and barely lose any attendance in the process and what does the cheap bastard do? Chops my budget by $6 million.

LOL-Even if Ollie 'Phenom' Morris played 162 games in 2009, that amount wouldn't even cover 2/3 of the expense of 1 game of his salary!

Maybe they could pay for his cab ride when the Phenom comes to Reno.
