Saying Goodbye for a Better Tomorrow

6/7/2008: Laredo, TX – As many Fish-fans may have noticed this last week, we are now one Fish-star less than when we started the season. That is right: superstar Octávio Pexego is now wearing a Calzones jersey, but in no way have the backs of the Fishermen squad been broken. GM Houser said at the beginning of his contract that he was going to rebuild the team while offering the fans a decent year of baseball. This deal is no exception to his concern about the team’s prospects and the future of our team.

Among the trade-offs, the Fishermen now have a great RF in Eric Olsen. This kid will be a key figure in the team in a few given years. “He can do everything,” as explained by Houser. J.J. Johnson was another name in the deal. He is not an All-Star, but he does have the ability to make contact and, given time, might break into the lineup as a bench player.

The best part of the deal, however, has to be the draft picks that Houser was able to pick up, which included a 2nd, two 3rds and an extra 5th round pick. Houser said that he will use these to beef up the hole in the farm system. At this point, there isn’t anyone to step up and take the team into a championship, but in a few years this could change rather quickly.

Another aspect of Houser’s great moves in the last few days has been the great improvement in our coaching and scouting personnel. Houser told the press that, “(He) believe(s) our key problem in the farm system is lack of coaching.” This is no longer the problem. Houser has just signed on a new staff to Triple A Beantown. These coaches were not cheap and are well known as great leaders. Three new Scouts have also been brought under the control of Peter Wood and are expected to help out greatly in the upcoming draft and placement of our future.
