2038 All-Star Game

#1 Post by Board of the PEBA »

The 2039 All-Star Game will be held as part of a Special Wednesday (12/20) sim and we will have a live broadcast of the game in the Slack All-Star channel – to then be transcribed here!! Be sure to get in there ahead of time (in case you need an invite) so you don’t miss the action. We will have a special 3:00pm PT (1pm HT/6pm ET) cut-off for exports so that I can do all the grunt work of setting up the All-Star teams and do the broadcast. Game time is tentatively scheduled for 4:00pm PT/7:00pm ET - but I'll begin when I've got it ready to roll. All-Star rosters will be announced Monday - post-sim.

Grab your tickets, some of Japan’s finest sake – like Ishizuchi - in business since 1920, and some Besshiame,! Our hosts for this year’s game, the Niihama-shi Ghosts, have The Oikake Maze primed for some racing around the bases. Hang out in the bleachers and catch some rays on work-out day, watch balls fly during batting practice or take a field trip to one of Niihama’s historical sites – just be sure to put your phone on ‘translate’!

Located on the island of Shikoku – one of the southern islands in Japan, Niihama is in the Ehime Prefecture and is the third largest city in the prefecture. Known for it’s Besshi copper mine that has long been closed, today it is the Taiko festival that brings thousands of visitors a year to the region. Niihama-shi owner, Vanni Bruno – the Italian business man who took over in 2036 – just in time for the Ghosts to win the championship four years after returning to the PEBA from their WIL banishment, was joined by city leaders, Ghosts GM Dan Vail, and manager Chris Harris, in welcoming fans to the 33rd PEBA All-Star Game! This year's game will be the first PEBA ASG hosted by the Ghosts, though the franchise were the hosts for the 2018 and 2020 (and last) LRS All-Star Game. This is the 4th All-Star Game hosted by the Rising Sun – Shin Seiki hosted in 2023 (an SL 6-5 win in 12-innings, with Aurora’s Mike Britt the MVP); Toyama in 2025 (an SL 3-2 win, in 10-innings, with there being no MVP named due to a global sports writers protest over widespread AI incorporation by the media outlets); Neo-Tokyo hosted the 2032 game (an SL 6-1 win, with Crystal Lake’s Yakamochi Kobayashi winning MVP).

All-Time, the Sovereign League holds a 17-15 edge as the IL broke the SL’s two-game win streak last year. The SL has won 7 of the past 10 games. There have also been four All-Star Game’s hosted by a former-LRS club that have relocated, as San Juan (formerly Yamato and Kawaguchi) in 2026, Havana (formerly Edo) in 2033 and 2035, and the Scottish (formerly Fushigi Yugi) last year, have all played host to the Midsummer Classic.

Okinawa (formerly Naha), the lone member of the LRS who made the leap to the PEBA (two original LRS franchises remain in the WIL – Kuwana and Kure), is scheduled to host the 2042 game.

Amongst the dignitaries who attended the opening festivities, was PEBA Commissioner ‘Harry’ Castle and Ehime Prefectural Governor Tokihiro Nakamura II, who is known to be a huge, vocal supporter of the Ghosts – in particular SP Yuji Yamashita. Social media was full of speculation whether the rival Shin Seiki Evas GM Kevin Vail – brother of the Niihama GM, would appear, but after a rough 7-day series with Reno and three games with Niihama to end the first half, it’s rumored that the Evas GM has headed to Macau for some R&R. Amongst the others in attendance are original franchise members from the birth of the League of the Rising Sun: Shigochiyo Memoto, Tokugawa Okamoto, Niihama career wins leader Kata Nakamura, and Ghosts’ career hit leader, Nobuhito Hasegawa.

The City of Niihama was all decked out in Ghost green & Grey and PEBA blues as fans from across Japan – and the globe, descended upon the southern part of Japan in celebration of the 2039 All-Star Game. Breweries and restaurants were filled; parks and temple grounds were bustling. Tourists boarded buses to visit historical sites, such as the self-proclaimed ‘Machu Picchu of the Orient’ – Tonaru, the remains of the Besshi Copper mining site that dates back to the 1600’s in the hills above Niihama – where many historians believe the city had its birth. Tall stone wall remnants of storage facilities remain, similar to those at the famed Peruvian site.

Image

Around the city were Taiko drums pounding rhythmic beats at every turn. At the Niihama Civic Cultural Hall, a fabulous Taiko concert thrilled audiences for two performances – a matinee and an evening show – by the traditional Taiko group KODO.

Image

The highlight for many visitors to the All-Star game was the annual All-Star Competition that has seen excitement over the years, such as Cleve Douglas of Charleston taking home the golf honors in Palm Springs or Rien Leeuwenburgh of the Arlington taking home the frisbee golf championship in Manchester; Francisco Lucador of West Virginia being deemed the PEBA bull riding champ in Reno or Claudio Hernandez and Dean Walden winning the Paddle & Portage in Madison.

Image

This year the event was held along the shores of the Kokuryo River at the Kokuryogawaryokuchi Ground Golf Grounds, and it finds the PEBA stars having to show their manual dexterity through the children’s game of Otedama. The object of the game is to toss small bean bags in the air in a specific manner, and at the end, score a set number of points, until a winner has been declared.

Image

The point total was set at five, and the all-stars lined up along a lengthy table that held 12-players. There were to be four groupings and the top four from each group would move on the second-round grouping of eight and then the top two in each group would move on to the finals.

Image

The All-Stars knew they were in trouble right from the start. On the very first round, Gloucester’s Norishige Ito and Aurora’s Toshikuni Kichida scored a full five on their first attempts, while others – like Reno’s Jose Ojeda struggled just to pick up three and four bag tosses, and then repeatedly watched the bags roll off the back of his hand, as he would finish last in his group. The hometown hero – Fernando Valdez of the Ghosts, was cheered on as he managed to score five points after his second series of tosses – much to the dismay of the purple and black clad Shin Seiki fans who hissed and booed boisterously in protest of it being the local star Valdez and not the Evas veteran pitcher Alberto Flores having been named to the SL squad.

Image

Perhaps it wasn’t a surprise that most of the players who moved on to the second round were of Japanese heritage – aside from Ito and the ‘Werewolf’, there also were Yoritomo Maeda (TOY), Masami Sanu (CL), Yasuoka Seki (NJ) and Keiji Honda.

Image

The second round provided some thrilling moments as Kentucky’s Dan Gore quickly scored four on his first toss – but then needed three more tosses to get just the one extra point – working furiously to get that one point as he saw Ito, Zach Osmond (LON) and Sanu close the gap – Ito qualifying first, and then Osmond and Gore traded drops on their third attempt – poor Sanu kept getting stuck on the ‘pick up four’ stage’. Osmund needed three to win, Gore just one, and it was Osmund who got to the last flip – and he had the three, the third teetering on the side of his hand… then falling off. That gave Gore the edge he needed – this time holding on to advance.

Image

The final had Ito, Gore, Kichida and Bakersfield’s Julio Jaramillo and it was an anticlimactic finish, as the competition ended as it began - Norishige Ito nailing all five on his first try, giving the young Gloucester starting pitcher the PEBA Otedama title! Through an interpreter, he gave thanks to his older sister who ‘forced us to play Otedama for hours at a time’. When asked about her, Norishige replied, ‘Oh, she just makes bean bags on Etsy now.’

The Futures game was held at the Oikake Maze, a beautiful domed stadium in downtown Niihama - and it was a tight game for 5-innings as the clubs traded blows, and the IL leading 5-4 after 5-innings. Akanori Gouda homered in the 3rd, tying a game that the SL would never lead.

Frank Walker of Tijuana (CST) and Yasuyuki Agano of Omaha (MAN) homered in the 8th and 9th innings, respectively, to give the IL the final 10-4 margin. Agano would go 3-5 in the game and drive in 3-runs to take home the MVP award! Olivero Guerrero of Muju (TOY) was 2-2 for the SL.

The HR Challenge drew a boisterous crowd, who would chant, bang drums and wave banners throughout the event. The pairings were drawn with the following pairs formed:

Vito van Wondel (FLA) v. German Lima (CL); Antonio Santos (KEN) v. Joe Riley (NJ); Eric Nelson (SCO) v. Eichiro Nakashima (LON); and Ramon Francisco (NJ) v. hometown favorite and hot as hades John MacVurich.

Vito was up first and he struggled at first, waving his hand in front of his eyes, as if he was having trouble seeing the ball, but as the clock ticked down, he got hot and come in with 11 dingers. Lima, on the other hand, started hot and was looking strong, but in the end, started popping the ball up, and would finish with just 8.

Antonio Santos would consistently hit the ball deep with a total of 11 as well, while Joe Riley seemed locked in, hitting line-drives and never really elevating the ball, and finishing with just 7.

Eric Nelson used his timeout well, and though he followed it up with a string of five-straight homer balls, it was Nakashima who found himself forcing his swings at rapid pace and never settling in the box that would give the former-Codger the 9-8 win.

Ramon Francisco, recently moved from Havana to New Jersey had the best start of the day, with 13-homers - but it was MacVurich who got the loudest cheers, but fell just short as his last ball hit the top of the fence and fell to the warning track.

Much to the delight of the crowd, in the second round it was Vito van Wondel who put up the lowest number and was defeated by Santos, 8-7, while Ramon Francisco edged past Nelson, 10-9, with ample time left on the clock, suggesting he was in the best groove of any of the hitters in the competition.

In the final, Antonio Santos swung the bat smoothly and with a good pace and looked like he would win - parking 11 homers - but 'The Wizard' was as good as he looked in the first two rounds, once again hitting more than enough HR - with time left on the clock, to take home the title - 12-11.

The fans settled into their seats, many carrying special All-Star Bento Boxes that contained many variable Japanese favorites: Karaage, a vegetarian option with edamame and steamed beans and salt, and American hot dogs with a collection of relishes. Asahi Girls – who were appropriately clad - wandered the stands offering beer, while the bar vendors offered up sakis and whiskeys for the more hardened fans.

The crowd rose in unison as they respectfully honored the Japanese anthem, Kimi Ga Yo, singing as one. The Anthem of the United States – The Star Spangled Banner followed. Very quickly the stadium speakers blasted out the Niihama pre-game favorite – Bon Jovi’s ‘Living on a Prayer’, popularized during the Ghosts’ magical 2036 championship season.

David Garcia of the Fargo Dinosaurs is on the mound, ready to go and it's Farstriders DH Jose Rios to start us of!

Rios looks at a ball before lining it to RF, Masami Sanu comes racing in and with a headlong dive - MAKES THE CATCH!!! And this one begins with a BANG!

Next up, Gordon Knoop, also of Florida... He swings a t a 1-2 pitch - and misses! That's 2-down.

That brings to the plate London Underground 1B Rocky Nichols, who is hitting .311 on the year, with 24 HR... He swings at a curve on the inside of the plate for strike three...

On to the B1...

IL - 0, SL coming up...
