2038 Minor League Players of the Year

#1 Post by Board of the PEBA »

The Playoffs are here - and the Rodriguez Cup will be here soon, which means it's that time of year again - Awards Season is nearly upon us!! But you can get a head start with your individual Organization Awards for top Minor League Hitter and Pitcher!! You know the drill... If you want to do a bigger posting in you blogs (or ~gasp~ home page, and add to your CP haul) - knock yourselves out! Just a listing here is sufficient, with a link back to your blog or Front page article, is fine.

Please use the following formatting when you make your announcement. Make sure to list players by their hyperlinked name, current full position (e.g. "SP" rather than just "P", "CF" rather than just "OF") and league level as listed in OOTP:
Proper formatting of awards announcement wrote:
Qualifications for Minor League Player of the Year Award
  • Players must have been in your organization since the start of the major league season (i.e. players acquired during the season through the draft or via trade are excluded from candidacy).
  • Players must have at least 300 PA (batters), or 10 starts or 40 appearances (pitchers) at the minor league level.
  • Players must not be older than 26 (or must have turned 27 after July 1).

San Juan Coqui Minor League Hitter of the Year:

OF Juan Borges (AAA/PEBA)

In the least surprising announcement of the offseason, last year’s top Coqui draft choice is this year’s organizational player of the year after rocketing from the ICBA to PEBA in just a bit over a calendar year. Juan Borges was a September call-up, and still finished second on the Coqui in homers. In the last month of the season, Borges hit 279/339/683 with 12 HR and 29 RBI for the Coqui. That successful audition for the 2024 starting lineup followed an abbreviated AAA campaign that saw Borges hit 248/334/475 with 27 HR and 74 RBI. For those keeping track, the 22 year old skipped AA and still hit 39 HR between AAA and PEBA. That showing has his name written in ink in the cleanup slot for the 2024 opening day Coqui lineup.

San Juan Coqui Minor League Pitcher of the Year:

SP Alberto Salazar (SS-A)

Repeat winner Alberto Salazar followed his 2037 debut season (8-7 in 17 starts, 2.84 ER, 0.95 WHIP) with a sophomore season that saw him aggressively promoted through Hi–A and AA before making two late season starts in AAA Santo Domingo. In 23 combined starts, Salazar generated 6.6 WAR while going 9-10 with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. The 22 year old is a favorite to break spring training with the PEBA roster.

History:

Minor League Hitter of the Year
2B/OF Jackson Wiley

Wiley mashed in 72 games at AAA Aberdeen, with 23 HR and a .295/.346/.611 slash line. Wiley posted a 176 WRC+ and a 3.7 WAR. Wiley's productive 1st half led to a call up to the Claymores, in which he continued to produce at 2B and the OF, posting 14 hr and a .247/.305/.516 slash line. Wiley's position flexibility provided value to the Claymores during their postseason push.

At AAA, Wiley put together a 21 game hit streak that ended on June 21st, was an all-star and the games MVP, and hit a grand slam on June 25th right before he was called up to the Claymores.

Minor League Pitcher of the Year
SP Thomas Connolly

Connolly made 16 starts for AAA Aberdeen and posted a 6-2 record with a 3.10 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 122 ERA+, and 2.3 WAR. Connolly earned a call up Claymores rotation, and proved that he was ready for the PEBA level. Connolly made 17 starts for the Claymores and posted a 5-5 record with a 4.50 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 93 ERA+, and .8 WAR. Connolly looks like he will be a fixture in the Claymores rotation for the foreseeable future, but will need to cut down on his walks to reach his full potential.

Connolly's best minor league start of the year was against the Fayetteville Braggarts on April 10th where he pitched a no hitter, with 13 K and 2 BB. Connolly continued showing glimpses of what he future may hold, for example a start late in the season against Manchester on September 19th in which he struck out 11 batters in 6 innings.

Minor League Hitter of the Year
3B Jose Itara (SA/AA)
Itara was named the Palm Springs Codgers Minor League Hitter of the Year after hitting .288 with 24 home runs and 79 RBIs for the Lana'i City Pineapples (SA) this season. He has shown steady development as an International Free Agent signee of 2033 and was promoted to Edmonton Mall Ratz (AA) to start the 2039 season.

Minor League Pitcher of the Year
SP Isaac Kennedy (A/AA/MLB)
Kennedy entered the season as the PEBA 98th ranked prospect pitching for the Codgers A-ball team in National City. He threw 109/2 innings posting a 1.64 ERA with a 10 and 3 win/loss record. He was "rediscovered" after a change in team management and made a pit stop with the Edmonton (AA) team throwing 2 scoreless innings before being called up to the Codgers. He made his PEBA debut on September 1st against the Yuma Arroyos throwing 6 innings in a 6-3 loss that saw him give up 6 hits and just 2 runs before exiting the game. Kennedy made 6 starts for the Codgers finishing with a respectable 3.29 ERA to go with a 2-2 record. Kennedy will be given an opportunity to earn a spot in the rotation in 20239 and beyond. He was a 2nd round pick of the Hartford Harpoons in the 2034 draft

Kentucky's 2038 minor league players of the year are:

Image

Hitter of the year: Third Baseman Sergej van den Adel AAA

Relatively easy decision for minor league Hitter of the year: Adel was a 2nd round pick, 69th overall in the 2037 draft. He hit .318 with a .903 OPS and a 5.7 WAR in AAA this season. He also had 17 homers and 25 SB's. His performance earned him a spot on Kentucky's playoff roster.

Pitcher of the year: Starting Pitcher Declan MacLean AA

MacLean was a 5th round pick, 155th overall in 2032. He had 36 appearances - 17 of which were starts. He finished with a 9-3 record with a 2.86 ERA and 10 saves.

Havana Minor League Hitter of the Year:

3B Ron Fields (AA)
The 307th pick of the 2034 draft hit his stride in 2038. In 498 Ab he amassed 150 H, 10 HR, 62 RBI and an .848 OBS. Critics question his effort, but they can't deny the results.
Havana Minor League Pitcher of the Year:

SP Jack Sosa (AA)
Havana's first round pick in the 2037 draft, he's wasted no time making his mark. The wily hurler put up a 15-8 season with a 2.33 ERA over 189 IP. With 174 K and a 1.07 WHIP has outlook is bright indeed.

2038 London Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Image
SP Bob Cruz (AA)

To be clear, Cruz is my second choice for this category. One of my 2038 draft picks, Ross Malloch, hands down should win this after a full rookie season completed with a 1.90 ERA, 221 ERA+, and 5.4 WAR to go with his 11 wins. However he is not eligible so Cruz it is.

Cruz is a 24 year old who originally came to our org via minor league contract signing in 2036. Playing in his second season for the Beatles he had found another gear over last year and became the top of the rotation ace for the team which won 82 games and won their division. He started 28 games and compiled a record of 14-5. He held a 2.60 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP along with a 158 ERA+ and 4.6 WAR. His 180 strikeouts was good for a 9.7 K/9 rate. He led the first place Beatles in ERA, wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched providing himself every bit as reliable and healthy as effective.

Cruz has an unclear future, at 24 in AA he is a bit behind the development curve but will surely make AAA next year which an opportunity to impress in spring training. If he makes the PEBA it will likely be as a reliever at this point, however.

2038 London Minor League Batter of the Year
Image
CF Noel Dulihanty (AAA)

The now 24 year old scouting discovery wins his second consecutive minor league POTY award. Dulihanty batted a modest .269 but still got on base at a .347 clip thanks to 53 walks. Once on base, Dulihanty continued to torture pitchers and defense alike as he swiped 57 bases - good for second best in all of AAA. He also found his power stroke at the AAA level, hitting 25 home runs through August. In fact, Dulihanty led the Locomotives in HR, RBI, and stolen bases. Additionally Dulihanty played a high level of defense in center field, with just 1 error in 391 total chances. All of this led to a 4.8 WAR for the season, which is a step back from last years 6.7 in AA but against much tougher competition. Dulihanty made his PEBA debut this year and played in 14 games, it is expected he will make the opening day roster for 2039.

Duluth Warriors -- Minor League Awards

Image
Hitter of the Year -- RF Dave Docherty (AAA)

Within the Warriors organization, 24 year old Dave Docherty is the unanimous choice for Hitter of the Year. Following a year in which he clubbed 34 HRs, knocked in 99 runs, batted .294, compiled a .969 OPS (174 OPS+), and registered a 6.8 WAR for the AAA Racine Lakers, he was honored with the RML Outstanding Hitter Award and the RML Platinum Stick Award at RF. Docherty, a 2nd round draft pick in 2035, is projected to earn a spot on the Duluth roster in 2039 and contribute at the plate as well as in RF, LF, and possibly 1B.

Image
Pitcher of the Year -- SP Ramon Noriega (AAA)

Ramon Noriega is the surprising - to some - selection as the organization's Pitcher of the Year. Noriega, now 22 years old, was a 5th round draft pick in 2037 out of Washington State. He gained some experience pitching for the A-level Rapid City Rushmores in 2037 and began the 2038 season with them logging 87.1 IP in 14 starts while compiling a 3.71 ERA and a 2.5 WAR. He showed enough promise to be promoted to the AA Medicine Hat Drillers for a short stay before moving to the AAA Racine Lakers. With Medicine Hat, he recorded a 4.39 ERA in 26.2 IP while walking 9 and striking out 24. Following his promotion to AAA Racine, he baffled batters in 13.1 IP while recording a 0.71 ERA. His command needs further development, but he appears to be on the fast track to the big show..

Congratulations to Dave Docherty and Ramon Noriega.

Minor League Hitter of the Year
Image | Image
1B Guillermo Fernandez (Ewa Beach Imperials) | .334/.464/.850, 61 HR, 139 RBI, 116 R, 4 SB (0 CS), 8.6 WAR
2B Pu-Feng Shuo (Port Sudan Tycoons) | .355/.451/.957, 54 HR, 104 RBI, 85 R, 2 SB (4 CS), 8.4 WAR
For the first time in franchise history, the Farstriders named two players as co-Minor League Players of the Year. The switch-hitting Guillermo Fernandez tore threw S-A pitching this season en route to setting new single-season records for the Surf and Snow Amalgamation League in both home runs (61) and RBI (139). Playing in 109 of a possible 110 games, Fernandez caught fire early in the season and never slowed down. In addition to the home runs and RBI, he finished second in the league with a .334 batting average and led all players from both leagues in OBP (.464), Slugging (.850), OPS (1.314), WAR (8.6), RC/27 (17.06), Isolated Power (.516), Total Bases (328), Runs (116), and Walks (81). The 23-year-old even went a perfect 4/4 in stolen bases.

Pu-Feng Shuo spent the first year of his 20s in his third rookie ball season, leading the Port Sudan Tycoons to the cusp of a championship. Like Fernandez, Shuo left an imprint all over the league leaders and record books. While his 54 HR were good enough for only 4th all-time, his .9574 Slugging, 1.4088 OPS, and 8.41 WAR were all single-season records in the IBC. He led the league in SLG (.957), OPS (1.409), WAR (8.4), ISO (.603), OPS+ (.275), and wOBA (.559) while finishing second in Avg, HR, RBI, OBP, R, Total Bases, and Extra Base Hits. Pu-Feng, who will now move up at least one level, leaves as perhaps the greatest player in IBC history and a legend to the Port Sudan fanbase. His career IBC records include Runs (231), Total Bases (717), Home Runs (129) RBI (284), and WAR (17.26).

Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Image
RHP Jose Sanchez (Ewa Beach Imperials) | 15-3, 2.36 ERA, 147 K, 24 BB, 0.83 WHIP, 198 ERA+, 6.6 WAR
Narrowly beating out teammates Ken Marshall and Anibal Gallegos for the award, Jose Sanchez takes home the Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award for the Farstriders. Drawing many comparisons to recently-traded Farstriders legend Luppe van Dam, Sanchez was flat out dominant on the mound in 2038. The 22-year-old threw a career-high 152.1 innings and looked to be much-improved over his age-21 season. In 152.1 innings, he posted a 15-3 record while showing both the stuff and control that have him rated as a top-60 prospect in the league. With a 6.125 K:BB ratio, the mastery of his control was the biggest take away from the season. Sanchez led the league in Innings Pitched, Shutouts, Opponent OBP, and Pitching WAR as well as appearing in the top-5 in Wins (2nd), CG (t-2nd), BB/9 (5th), K:BB (2nd), WHIP (2nd), and Opponent OPS (4th). Sanchez, along with the rest of the ace pitching staff, will likely move on to NAFTA A-ball in 2039.

Okinawa 2038 Minor League Batter of the Year:Enrique Cruz (AA)
Image
Splitting his time between A and AA, Cruz was promoted mid season after batting .350 in A ball with a .879 OPS, 136OPS+ and contributing 2.6WAR. After the promotion to AA, the numbers were not quite as heady however he was still able to bit .293 with a .347 OBP holding his own as a shortstop who event give away too much on offense and generating 1.8WAR in AA as well to turn in a strong season that puts the 25yo on the organization's radar for emergency callups.

Okinawa 2038 Minor League Pitcher of the Year:Yoritomo Hayakawa (A)
Image
Yoritomo Hayakawa has a ridiculous year of development. The former 8th round 247th pick skyrocketed up the OSA top prospects board this season and is currently rated the #21 overall prospect by OSA. According to scouting, Hayakawa improved from 5 (5) stuff to 10 (10) stuff in 6 months, added velocity, improced him control and control potential and worked on his movement as well. With his elite PEBA ready Curve and Change, he dominated in A ball this season going 15-4 with a 2.52 ERA and a 176 ERA+. he improved his K/9 rate from 7.3 a year ago in A ball to a staggering 12.0 this season and went from 0.4 WAR to 5.4 WAR. The organization now thinks he can make the jump to AAA to start next season, while ultimately seeing if he can decrease his HR rate which currently looks to be the only thing that may keep him from being elite in PEBA, and especially in a ballpark like Okinawa's Shisa Stadium II.

Aurora Announces 2038 Minor League Players of the Year
by Francis Ferry, NLN baseball beat writer

Minor League Hitter of the Year
Image
1B Mark Newton (AA/AAA)
Aurora's 3rd round pick (70th overall) in the 2036 draft, Mark Newton, is a swift, put the ball in play, hitter who spent the bulk of the 2038 season with AA Gatineau. Scouts describe him as a 'Raul Munoz-lite - lacking the power Aurora's three time batting champ has - but who possesses blazing speed that he used to swipe 46 bases combined over his 128 games this year. He hit .291 on the year, adding 34-2B and 18-3B to his resume, and managed 4 HR. He scored 87-runs and drove home 56 - primarily out of theta of the order.

Newton has matched the Organizations expectations, hitting .304 over his 300 pro games that have spanned all levels since his selection - including 98 SB. Although Munoz is signed through at least 2041, the club is still hopeful to find a spot for Newton in the coming seasons. Perhaps DH may be in Raul's future.

That said, it is expected that Newton will receive an invite to spring training and will open the season with Thornton - what is expected to be a full season of 'seasoning'.

Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Image
SP Gui Sun (SA)
The case for Chinese right-hander, Gui Sun, is an interesting one. The scouting discovery from early 2033 just finished his 4th pro season - two with Montserrat and two at Mokule'ia. Each season saw Gui lower his ERA from 4.70 in 2035 to this years 1.83. The previous three years he has 19-total decisions - and this year he was 10-3 in 21-starts. This year he threw 122.2-innings and struck out 87 and walked just 17, allowing just 5 HR. He also had a 5 WAR - tops amongst the Organizations pitchers.

The third consecutive Short A pitcher to win this award, what makes Sun interesting is that Gui will be Rule 5 eligible, and scouts have privately said that Gui Sun is a 'head-scratcher' - the substance of his work being far better that his cover, to warp a metaphor. Aurora is expected to have a high number of spots open on their 40-man roster, so there is a high likelihood that Gui will be on the roster and make a spring appearance. Depending on that, it is expected that he will start either at SLRC or, more likely, Gatineau.

Toyama 2038 Minor League Batter of the Year: OF Yoshisada Shimizu (R)
Image

Only the 3rd rookie league player to win the award in organization history, Shimizu sneaks into eligibility with just 370 PA's this season. His first season of professional baseball after being called up from Toyama's international complex, 2038 was the year of Shimizu in Muju as the centerfielder hit .293 with a .378 OBP and 23 HR's. The 19yo tacked on an additional 23 SB's and was also a great defensive asset. A scouting discovery back in 2035, Shimizu was discovered in his hometown of Sapporo, Hokkaido, coincidentally the home of Toyama's AA affiliate, the Toyohira Fubuki.

Toyama 2038 Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Dave Costello (A)

To likely no one's surprise, Dave Costello takes home the award after a dominant 2038 that is likely to culminate in a March 2039 call-up. The 33rd overall pick from the 2036 draft. Costello has had the attention of Toyama fans all season boasting a 14-3 record in AAA on the back of a 2.20 ERA and consistent delivery that has become a commonality for the Seton Hall graduate. In what has become his trademark, Costello has given up just 7 homerun's across 305 innings pitched over the last 2 years. Those 2 years encompass 4 levels of minor league ball (SA, A, AA, AAA) and have given Costello the reputation of being a future stud groundball pitcher during a time when homeruns have seen a significant uptick.
