Re: 2037 Predictions

#3 Post by Arroyos »

After sweeping the Predictions Awards this season, Yuma has a reputation to maintain. Simply following out hunches will no longer suffice. We need data! So we turned to the ultimate statistical genius, Annette Choi, famed for her charting and analysis of foul balls.

We chatted with Choi about the PEBAverse and OOTP and Michael Topham, who she claims her mother dated in grad school. As we all know, OOTP is very stingy when it comes to data about foul balls. Occasionally, we learn that one has been hit or caught, but at no time do the wizards of OOTP reveal to us poor statistic-starving managers how many foul balls a batter hits or how many reach the stands or where in the stands most foul balls land. Choi's research does that, and more.

So, suffice to say, having met with the Queen of Foul Balls, we can now draw reliable conclusions about the coming season.
Drum roll, please.

Imperial League

Seaboard
1. W. Virginia
2. Arlington
3. Manchester
4. New Jersey
*(Hartford, you'll notice, is missing. The Harpoons will suffer one of the worst seasons in PEBA history, losing more games than the Arroyos by the All-Star break. Financially, they will be bankrupted by an owner who absconds with the team's funds in order to run for the US Presidency. When their paychecks cease to arrive, the players will vote to strike, and they will stay on strike for the remainder of the season.)

Dixie
1. Kentucky
2. New Orleans
3. San Antonio
4. Charleston
*(Florida will lead the entire PEBA going into the All-Star break, but the players tire of being called the Fart-riders, a nickname even their fans adopt. Whoopy cushions are given out as promotions, and instead of walk-up music, Florida's players have to endure walk-up fart sounds. They rebel and refuse to play, effectively joining the Hartford strike for very different reasons.)

Trans Atlantic
1. Gloucester
*(The Fishermen are the only team to complete the season in the TransAtlantic division. The Scottish boys join the Hartford strike the moment they hear of it. They slowly, but effectively, shame the London team into eventually joining the strike. In San Juan, the players are divided over joining the strike, which outrages the owner, who fires every player who voted to strike, which compels the rest of the team to go on strike. In Havana--well, a little background: Cuba's President Miguel Díaz-Canel is forced out of office by Che Guevara's grand son, who has raised a revolutionary army to restore the republic. The fact that Cuba has never been a republic doesn't seem to occur to Che, Jr. Once in power, Che, Jr., abolishes all nationalized businesses, including baseball. The Leones players are banished by Cuba and find themselves stranded in the U.S., where, after a few days of moping about their sad lives, they decide to reinvent the Negro Leagues, inviting players of color to join them. No white players are invited. And finally, in Amsterdam, the Afsluitdijk Dike bursts and floods the entire country, including the Lions' baseball offices and stadium. That ended their season. Strangely, none of the Lions players heard about the strike.)

Sovereign League

Great Lakes
1. Kalamazoo
2. Fargo
3. Duluth
4. Madison
5. Crystal Lake* (The Sandgnats voted to join the strike, but their avaricious owner threatened to drain all the expensive water--purchased from Yuma--out of the lake. The entire city protested. The players thought it wise to continue playing baseball, but their hearts weren't in it.)

Desert Hills
1. Aurora
2. Tempe
3. Bakersfield
*(The teams from Yuma, Reno and Palm Springs not only supported the strike, they decided to form a new league, The Maverick Ballplayers League, owned and operated entirely by the players. No deep-pocket investors, no General Managers, no money-grubbing Agents--just ballplayers playing for the joy of the game and dividing up the gate receipts at the end of each game. In time, the new Maverick League may challenge the remnants of the PEBAverse in the imagination of baseball enthusiasts.)

Rising Sun
1. Toyoma
2.Niihama-shi
3. Shin Seiki
4. Okinawa
5. Neo Tokyo
*(The Rising Sun players heard about the strike but didn't take it seriously. Their seasons were concluded uneventfully.)

Postseason

The Commission of the PEBAverse decided, wisely, that a shortened Postseason would be wise. The first place teams in each remaining division were invited to play in a round-robin tournament. Only West Virginia, Aurora and Toyoma showed up. The Toyoma Wind Dancers beat the Alleghenies and the Borealis beat the Wind Dancers. With few watching, and fewer caring, the Commissioner awarded the once valued, now suspect, Rodriguez Cup to his own team, the Borealis. Cynics and conspiracy lovers shouted "Foul!," accusing the Commissioner of rigging the entire season so the Borealis could win. The Commish denied it, of course, but gave in to public pressure and resigned.

No one volunteered to replace him, and as we report these sad events, the fate of the PEBAverse remains uncertain.

There's no need to strike in the Netherlands as employees can take as many mental health days as they want. When the Afsluitdijk bursts (Afsluitdijk Dike is redundant...), there will naturally be many mental health days, aided somewhat by a sudden drop in the price of raw herring.

4. Manchester Maulers
5. Hartford Harpoon
West Va will still win going away, but I like NJ's chances of competing for a WC spot this season. Arlington did some nice work strengthening their long-term prospects this offseason and McCoy should be a ringer. Manchester is still building with a couple young pieces and Hartford is in rebuild mode.

Dixie
1. Florida Farstriders
2. Kentucky Thoroughbreds
3. San Antonio Calzones
4. New Orleans Trendsetters
5. Charleston Statesmen
If only Kentucky weren't saddled with being in the Dixie, they'd probably win 110-115 games. As it stands these two are still head and shoulders above the division. San Antonion had a splashy offseason while NO and Charleston continue their rebuilds.

Trans Atlantic
1. London Underground
2. Scottish Claymores
3. Havana Leones
4. Amsterdam Lions
5. San Juan Coqui
6. Gloucester FIshermen
Still one of the most competitive divisions in PEBA, London will edge out Scotland and Havana who are both very competitive for postseason slots. Scotland has a bit of regression after a magical '36 and Amsterdam goes year one on their re-tool.

IL Awards Winners

Wunderkind Winner: James McCoy, ARL

Sovereign League

Great Lakes
1. Duluth Warriors
2. Kalamazoo Badgers
3. Fargo Dinosaurs
4. Crystal Lake Sandgnats
5. Madison Malts
At some point I'm going to pick Duluth to win the GL and they will, right? I think '37 is the year after an ultra-aggressive offseason. Kalamazoo holds with it's superstars up top, and Fargo does a bit of re-tooling after a SLCS appearance last season. Crystal Lake and Madison continue their rebuilds.

Desert Hills
1. Reno Zephyrs
2. Tempe Apollos
3. Aurora Borealis
4. Bakersfield Bears
5. Palm Springs Codgers
6. Yuma Arroyos
I'd like to think this will be a competitive race atop the DH in '37, but Reno has some impressive talent across the board and no glaring weaknesses. Tempe and Aurora (who will never not be threat) slug it out for second, while Bakersfield gets a little older and slides to 4th. The Codgers are probably a year away from making this a four-way battle for the DH crown as their young'uns develop and Yuma churns out high threshold pitchers.

Rising Sun
1. Toyama Wind Dancers
2. Niihama-Shii Ghosts
3. Shin Seiki Evas
4. Okinawa Shisa
5. Neo Tokyo Akira
This feels like the year for Toyama. Despite sharing a division with the reigning champs, it's hard not to see them as the closest thing the SL has to a Florida. Both TOY and NII win 100+ games. Shin Seiki is a 50/50 shot for the postseason - probably dependent on health from RIvera - but only suffers because they have to share the RS with two heavyweights. Okinawa is a 90+ win team in likely any other division. Neo Tokyo enters year two of rebuild.

Imperial League
Seaboard
1. West Virginia
2. Arlington
3. New Jersey
4. Manchester
5. Hartford

2-4 is really a toss-up, but Arlington has done more to improve - whether that really is a difference maker time will tell. Is it enough to get the Seaboard another playoff spot? Highly unlikely.

Dixie
1. Florida
2. Kentucky
3. San Antonio
4. New Orleans
5. Charleston

It's Status Quo in the Dixie, with the only the annual question being 'Can KTY make it close?' San Antonio has thrown a lot of cash around this offseason, will they be able to buy a playoff spot? That may depend on the TA.

Trans Atlantic
1. London
2. Scottish
3. Havanna
4. Amsterdam
5. San Juan
6. Gloucester

Our UK brethren have done a good job of creating some momentum - and it's a coin toss on who finished on top. Havana and Amsterdam suddenly look a step below - but might challenge for a playoff spot... with some luck.

Sovereign League
Great Lakes
1. Duluth
2. Kalamazoo
3. Fargo
4. Crystal Lake
5. Madison

Duluth's time may have arrived with some key offseason moves, while Kzoo and Fargo are mostly quiescent. The Dinos lost a lot of heart, making it tough to repeat in the GL.

Desert Hills
1. Aurora
2. Reno
3. Tempe
4. Bakersfield
5. Palm Springs
6. Yuma

The Borealis' faith in their core pays off with a bounce back season. Reno's status quo may not be enough to hold off an improving Tempe team who's addition of Barse will help balance the playing filed in the DH. Bakersfield has too much talent to finish below 4th - and frankly could have a similar bounce back like Aurora and be in the heart of the race - they are the SL dark horse.

Rising Sun
1. Toyama
2. Niihama-shi
3. Shin Seiki
4. Neo-Tokyo
5. Okinawa

It's tempting to put the champs on top, but the Win-D's have made efforts to tighten their 'pen which might be enough over 162-games. The big question in the RS will be The Evil Evas' status - do they have another 100-wins in them? They may need that to make the post-season, especially if we see bounce backs from Aurora, Bakersfield and Kalamazoo.

Imperial League
Seaboard
1. West Virginia
2. Arlington
3. New Jersey
4. Manchester
5. Hartford

WV is the clear favorite, but 2-3 is a toss-up. Arlington has some young talent that could shit the favor if they can perform in the PEBA.

Dixie
1. Florida
2. Kentucky
3. San Antonio
4. New Orleans
5. Charleston

Probably the most top-heavy division we've seen in a long time with potentially the best team and the best #2 team in it. 1 & 2 are likely locked in, 3-4 could see some variation.

Trans Atlantic
1. Scottish
2. London
3. Havana
4. Amsterdam
5. San Juan
6. Gloucester

Always the more competitive division in the IL, the top teams are still fairly young and improving. I think Scottish are a bit more developed, but this division could go either way.

Sovereign League
Great Lakes
1. Duluth
2. Kalamazoo
3. Fargo
4. Madison
5. Crystal Lake

Duluth is the team to watch with young players finishing development and free agent reinforcements, all while playing in a division that seems to be having it's "changing of the guard" moment.

Desert Hills
1. Reno
2. Aurora
3. Tempe
4. Palm Springs
5. Bakersfield
6. Yuma

Tempe could very easily blow the lid off of this division which is one of the harder divisions to guess. The top-3 is up in the air.

Rising Sun
1. Toyama
2. Niihama-shi
3. Shin Seiki
4. Okinawa
5. Neo-Tokyo

Putting myself first just so my owner doesn't fire me for our payroll situation this season. Niihama is full of talent and I think it will be a 1-2 between Toyama/Niihama while SS remains very close behind despite their "reloading".
