2036 Minor League Players of the Year

#1 Post by Board of the PEBA »

The Playoffs are here - and the Rodriguez Cup will be here soon, which means it's that time of year again - Awards Season is nearly upon us!! But you can get a head start with your individual Organization Awards for top Minor League Hitter and Pitcher!! You know the drill... If you want to do a bigger posting in you blogs (or ~gasp~ home page, and add to your CP haul) - knock yourselves out! Just a listing here is sufficient, with a link back to your blog or Front page article, is fine.

Please use the following formatting when you make your announcement. Make sure to list players by their hyperlinked name, current full position (e.g. "SP" rather than just "P", "CF" rather than just "OF") and league level as listed in OOTP:
Proper formatting of awards announcement wrote:
Qualifications for Minor League Player of the Year Award
  • Players must have been in your organization since the start of the major league season (i.e. players acquired during the season through the draft or via trade are excluded from candidacy).
  • Players must have at least 300 PA (batters), or 10 starts or 40 appearances (pitchers) at the minor league level.
  • Players must not be older than 26 (or must have turned 27 after July 1).

Tempe Knights Minor League Players of the Year - 2036
Image
2036 Minor League Hitter of the Year:
Image
Gael Hollingsworth

The 19-year-old Hollingsworth excelled across two levels for the Tempe organization in 2036, beginning the year at Short Season A Whitehorse prior to earning a mid-season promotion to Single A Calexico. A 2nd round pick, 41st overall in the 2035 draft, Gael became one of the youngest players to arrive in the North American Farm Team Alliance, and performed admirably considering his youth and the level, posting a .253/.351/.542 slash line. Hollingsworth tagged 17 HR's in 225 at-bats and maintained a 2:1 K/BB ratio despite his limited experience, against far more advanced players. While Hollingsworth appears likely to be a bat-first (if not bat-only) prospect given his limited range, the organization believes his bat is advanced enough that he can progress quickly, perhaps making a ML debut as soon as next season.

2036 Minor League Pitcher of the Year:
Image
José Villarreal

An international find by the Knights scouting staff, the soft-tossing Villareal had a breakthrough in his age 19 season at Rookie League Sejong in 2036. Signed out of Nicaragua in September of 2034, Villareal features three pitches which project to be plus in the future, along with advanced command and control. In 18 starts, Villareal posted a 13-2 record along with a 2.27 ERA in 122.2 innings pitched along with a cool 1.09 WHIP on the campaign. The 6' 4" righty is likely to begin 2037 with the Whitehorse Explorers as he pitches through his age-20 season and will look to add additional velocity as he fills out his sinewy frame.

Niihama Minor League Hitter of the Year:

RF Pedro Hernandez had 305 plate appearances this season. In those limited opportunities, the 19-year-old hit more home runs than anyone else in the organization. He crushed an IBC pitcher's offering over the wall once every 5.5 plate appearances. His 0.950 SLG was not only a team record, but it beat the previous record by .348. He smashed team records for total bases and home runs and OPS as well. Beyond the team, he set IBC records for SLG, OPS, and HR.

Niihama Minor League Pitcher of the Year
:

SP Armando Sanchez split his season between A ball, where he embarrassed the competition with a 0.92 ERA and 0.57 WHIP across 8 starts, and AA ball where he led the Ikari Warriors to the GNL championship series with a 2.56 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 17 regular season starts. He pitched 14.1 innings in two starts of that series, allowing just 3 total runs and earning two wins with game scores of 68 and 70. The 21-year-old kid has been phenomenal since being acquired in exchange for the 2035 Niihama MiL Hitter of the Year, Carlos de la Garza. Expect to see him in AAA in '37, perhaps even debuting in Niihama.

New Jersey’s 2036 Minor League Hitter of the Year:
LF Adam Barnes (AAA) was a consistent force out in left field as the future putting up a .310/.350/.502 line at the plate this season for Clifton as well as the most home runs (16) and RBI (82) of his baseball career at any level. Barnes is hoping his play is enough to get a serious look from management in the offseason and spring to compete for a spot on the crowded major league roster that has the likes of Denis 'The Don' Johnson, Tomás Martínez, and Kazunari Ito. Fans and management alike are hoping Barnes with his speed and range could learn to play Center, a position still not locked down in New Jersey.

Runners up included impressive seasons by; IF Hisamitsu Kamimura (AA) who played wherever he needed this season to grow into a utility threat, 3B Dave Rivera (AAA / AA) who got a quick promotion from Camden to Clifton this year and continued to impress, and RF John Bayles (R) the 2035 7th round pick for NJ in the draft who put up a gaudy 43 home runs for Djibouti this year.

New Jersey’s 2036 Minor League Pitcher of the Year:
SP Brody Buggins (SS-A) recent 18th round pick from the 2036 was battered and bruised when it came to picking up wins this year for the Hoops, but that didn't stop him from going out there and going to work each game this year. He put together 8 quality starts (.421%) and 1 complete game, the lefty was as consistent as ever since coming out of Outback State University.

Runners up included SP Ricardo Blanco (A) who did his best with impressive strike out numbers this year for the Crooners, SP Hyun-Kyoo Chong (AA) who tried to help Camden repeat last year's performance but didn't get the run support, and SP Han Yip (A) who tried to be a sparkplug for the Crooners but just couldn't get any help from the bats.

Romero who was an international signing spent the entire season in AAA. He hit .296 with 19 homers. He should push for a position with the big club next season

Aurora Announces 2036 Minor League Players of the Year
by Francis Ferry, NLN baseball beat writer

Minor League Hitter of the Year
Image
CF Declan 'Crackpot' Ingall (R)

'Crackpot' as he is called around the locker room for his occasional 'odd' tendencies, came to the Aurora Borealis in a February 2035 trade with Yuma in a deal that included Howard Joyce and $6.5M. He was an International Free Agent for the Yumans, who toiled for a year and a. half in their IC before the trade to Aurora. Last season he would have been a consideration for this award, as he hit .366 for Montserrat, but this year, despite seeing that average drop over 60 more AB, to .315, he doubled his 2035 HR total - hitting 24 in 2036, while compiling an Aurora Minor League 2nd best .954 OPS, along with 72 RBI. While his team mates struggled during the Mystiques first playoff appearance, Declan was 8-18, with a 2B, HR, and 2 RBI in their sweep at the hands of Aukland (FAR).

The 19-year old will probably begin 2037 at Mokule'ia, another club that had deep playoff aspirations run amok - hitting .337 over two seasons of Rookie ball solidifies that move. Though a savvy base-stealer, his skills preclude him from doing much, and despite individual skills that are above average, his overall play in CF is but average, with a probable move to LF a likely result in the future.

Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Image
SP Felix Rosa (SA)

Felix Rosa was a young scouting discovery out of the Dominican Republic back in the spring of 2031 and it was three and a half seasons before he saw his first action with a promotion to Montserrat in July of 2034. During his first two seasons in the Borealis system he split time between Montserrat and Mokule'ia - showing mostly signs of success in both locations. This year, a full season in Hawaii, saw Felix post a perfect 10-0 record for the 1st place Oceanic, with a 2.33 ERA over 20 starts. In 108 IP he allowed just 5 HR and struck out 139 with a .157 OAVG. Where Felix struggled - and what may keep him from making it to The Show is with the walks - 74 to be precise, turning that .157 average into a .303 OBP. Rosa did a good job of keeping the walks to minimal damage as teams slugged it at just .231.

Felix has great stuff, and he's well like and respected in the clubhouse. He features 5-pitches, including a top-notch fastball, it's just a matter of keeping it over the plate. If he can, he may have a future in the rotation, if not the future may lie in the bullpen or...

Next season it's likely Felix will begin 2037 at San Luis Rio Colorado.

Toyama 2036 Minor League Batter of the Year: LF Reggie Raines (SA)
Image

For the third season in a row, 'The Heir' claimed his throne as Toyama's Minor League Player of the Year, but this one was probably the most impressive of the 3. Raines hit .254/.456 with 25 HRs, 69 RBIs, and a whopping 153 BBs. Raines finished the season with a 26.3 BB% for the AAA Plumbers in what is likely his final season of minor league ball with a PEBA call-up surely on the horizon. And the most impressive fact about Raines' season, is that he did it all after SKIPPING AA entirely after his stellar A-season in 2035.
Toyama 2036 Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Jung-hoon Kim (R)
Image

The first Rookie-level player to win the award, Jung-hoon Kim gets the nod in his rookie season of professional baseball after getting called up from the international complex in April. The 20-year-old Kim made his presence and dominance immediately known knowing 9-4 with a 2.33 ERA, 10K/9, and 1.5BB/9 across 18 starts. Kim finished 5th in WAR for the entire IBC with 4.5 and led the league with a 0.83 WHIP.

#9 Post by Nigel »

In a real down year for the whole franchise I almost completely blanked this, sending a note around saying that there just wasn't any candidates worthy of selection. I couldn't be that cruel to the kids though, some of them did rise just above the molasses and here's the cream of the . . . bottom feeders

San Antonio Minor League Players of the Year 2036

Batter of the Year - 2B Adam Smith, Drumright Tornadoes (A)

Image

24-yr-old Adam is in his second year with the franchise having been selected in the seventh round (215th overall) of the 2035 draft. Having made 27 appearances for Drumright in his first year, he stepped up this year and made 99 A-Ball appearances, increasing his WAR from 0.5 to 3.5. Showing a patient attitude at the plate, he worked 50 walks, while flashing the bat when the opportunity arose as he knocked 22 balls out of the park, driving in 63 runs.

Pitcher of the Year - SP/RP Don Brown, Drumright Tornadoes (A)

Image

23-yr-old Don was a ninth rounder (264th overall in 2034) and 2036 was his first year at A Ball level. The lefty hurler has made some starts in his career with the franchise, but a weak change up and poor command of it has left him more often than not in a swing man role. He posted a 9-4 record with a 2.59 ERA which in itself was good considering the records of most of the franchise pitchers but was enhanced by only allowing 57 hits in 97 innings pitched. Surrendering just four long balls, he owned a 104/48 K/BB ratio, an ERA+ of 143, a WHIP of 1.08 and a WAR of 2.2, his first substantial WAR.

Havana Minor League Hitter of the Year:

SS Leonardo Otero (A)
Otero stepped into the shoes of last year's MLHOTY Kolomon "Jackrabbit" Amsel and wore them like a nice pair of moccasins. In 423 AB he had 49 RBI and 67 BB to 91 SO. His fielding was where he really shone. He played at 2B, 3B, SS and LF, posting positive ZR in each position with a top ZR of 5.6 at SS. The Ecatepec, Mexico native is an instinctive SS with a nose for the ball.
Havana Minor League Pitcher of the Year:

RP Jorge Hernandez (ML)
Hernandez had a banner year with the AAA Tinajon where he racked up 116 K in 125.2 innings of work across 19 starts. He was the standout pitcher on a depleted roster and found himself at season's end in PEBA hoping to contribute to another Havana postseason run. While it didn't pan out and Hernandez struggled in PEBA he did manage to post a 4-3 record in 9 starts and looks to improving on those numbers next year.

SS 2036 Minor league hitter of the Year- 3B Doug Knox
Knox is a man on the rise. He started 2036 in A ball and quickly made it clear that he was ready for more (.259/.376/.461 in 279 PA - 140 OPS+). He made the jump from A to AAA, and continued to perform (.283/.338/.508 in 130 PA - 138 OPS+). He could probably contribute in PEBA at 1B in a pinch now, especially vs. RHP. But he needs some more time to develop to his full potential. Ideally, he would play 3B, but his glove has not been adequate to allow that so far. He committed 18 errors in only 93 games in 2036. He will need to improve that to have a chance at dislodging Noah Hill in SS. Still, his bat profiles to be very good vs. RHP, and his 1B glove is solid. He is more likely to put pressure on current Eva 1B Scotty Weeks, who could be vulnerable if his bat continues to be so erratic. That's not likely to happen right out of the gate in 2037. But Knox could force his way to PEBA by the end of 2037.

SS 2036 Minor League Pitcher of the Year SP Mike O'Halloran (A)
He started 2036 at only 20 years old in SA and earned himself a promotion to A ball through a dominating stat line (1.31 ERA, 309 ERA+, in 13 starts and 89 IP), though it was partially fueled by a .232 BABIP. He continued to perform in A ball (2.34 ERA, 166 ERA+, in 6 starts and 34.2 IP). He is still a long way from PEBA - likely late 2038 at the earliest. He still projects to land in SS, despite being a RHP, because he keeps the ball on the ground (only 1 HR in 123.2 IP in 2036).

Follow Up on 2031's winners:
  • C\1B Manny Lara was made expendable by the arrival of C Leonardo Ortega, who proved to have a better glove and a serviceable bat vs. LHP. Lara was dealt to ARL.
  • SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi continues to inch towards his potential, but still hasn't reached it. He was a valuable contributor in 2036 though. SS would have been in a lot of trouble without his production (17-9, 94 ERA+, 205 IP, 4.7 WAR). But the hope for Yi was never to just eat a lot of innings in a mediocre fashion. He is supposed to be better than that.
Follow Up on 2032's winners:
  • LF Cris Krebs was better in 2036, but not great. His overall line was OK (.301/.346/.423 103 OPS+ in 341 PA). He was better vs. LHP (.313/.355/.441 110 OPS+ in 231 PA). He will turn 27 in 2037. At this point he seems to be a useful PEBA player, but not a star. Scout still think he has breakout potential vs. LHP. But he's unlikely to be more than average vs. RHP. Still, that likely guarantees him a slot in SS for the foreseeable future, even if he never becomes the star it seemed he once might.
  • SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi - See above.
Follow Up on 2033's winners:
  • 1B/3B Scotty "The Grinch" Weeks is in trouble. His performance has narrowed his options for success in SS. His bat has proven to be 100% unusable vs. LHP over the last 3 seasons (32 OPS+ in 111 PA). His glove as a 3B has been weak (.892 EFF), so he's not going to start there unless it's in a pinch. That leaves him as a very solid 1B (1.032 EFF) or a DH - but only vs. RHP. Unfortunately, he has shown himself to be very streaky. For example, he raked in May (.256/.293/.615 8 HR in 82 PA - 132 OPS+) and was a disaster in June (.171/.227/.314 3 HR in 75 PA - 42 OPS+). So there is cause for concern. But Weeks is still young and cheap. He will likely start 2037 in SS and get every opportunity to lock down 1B. But if he falters, he could easily find himself in AAA or on the block. Knox will likely be knocking on the door of the PEBA roster by the end of 2037, so Weeks had better get his act together.
Follow Up on 2034's and 2035's winners:
  • DH António Gómez - Dealt to Arlington after Ryo Takahashi was acquired from WV. He was excellent in limited PEBA playing time (.294/.388/.612 in 98 PA's).
  • SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi - See above.

2035 London Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Image
SP Antonio Mata
13-5 | 1.93 ERA | 133K | 153.2IP | 5.8 WAR

The only supplemental pick I can ever recall making, Antonio Mata arrived at single A this year ready to take some names and kick some butt, and boy did he. The 22 year old's 1.93 ERA was good for 4th best in all of A ball, his pitching WAR of 5.8 was 3rd best, and his WHIP of 0.93 was second best. His name appears all over the pitching leaderboards for the season and he was a significant part of the very successful season which saw the 80-48 Birmingham Bears make a deep playoff run that fell a win short of bringing home the gold. Mata contributed meaningfully in the playoffs as well, earning a 3-1 record in 5 starts with a 2.61 ERA against the league's best. As far as personal accolades, Mata was an All-Star selection to this years NAFTA A All Star Game, was pitcher of the month in September, and finished 2nd for the Outstanding Pitcher Award. He also pitched his first career no hitter in June, notching 7 strikeouts along the way. The team is unsure where he will pitch for his fourth professional season.

2035 London Minor League Batter of the Year
Image
CF Zak Osmond
.275/.338/.321 | 13HR | 62RBI | 32SB

Former 8th overall pick in the 2034 draft, Osmond essentially skipped A and AA completely and arrived in AAA this season after spending all but 8 games in SS-A in 2035. Despite this significant jump he thrived off the big boys, batting .275/.338/.421. More than just a bat though, Osmond was 4th in AAA with 32 stolen bases and was extremely effective in the field with just 1 error in 1083.1 innings in CF and a 3.4ZR. At just 20 years old, Osmond's complete package season was an enthusiastic success and has certainly earned him a call to the PEBA next year.

Honorable mention: RF Eichiro Nakashima
Nakashima is not eligible but honestly was probably worth of the award despite being a 2036 draftee. He hit 29 HR in 71 games to lead the my A team in HR, RBI, and batting average. He even stole 8 bases, bonus!
