Alfredo Benitez - making 5.5 or so this year. Wants a 3 year extension. At just 2.98 per. Odd that a starting first basemen is willing to take a 2.5 million dollar pay cut.
I think he's still having flashbacks to West Virginia and those possum dinners.
Interesting contract situation

Re: Interesting contract situation
Want a weirder one? I had an offer to a player that was less than they asked for. After this last update, they had declined, but when I went to re-negotiate, they actually asked for LESS than my previous offer. Something in the PEBA financial world must have recently changed in this last sim as I have a few asking for much less than they asked for in the last couple of weeks.Calzones wrote:Alfredo Benitez - making 5.5 or so this year. Maybe its the impending influx of draftable players - the established players are fearing for their future jobs and are a little more reasonable. I'll have to remember that in the future

i'm not sure.Borealis - Commissioner wrote:I can verify that nothing behind the scenes has changed, so it must be something perceptual by the players. Pehaps the coming influx as you stated, or more likely poor performance on the players part?
take pedro rosa - a top flight lefty set up man making $3m, he didn't give up an earned run this season until this last sim:
the first week of the season he wanted $5m/1 year.
the second week of the season he wanted $1.5m/1 year.
the thid week of the season (when he had a pretty poor week) he's back to $5m/1 year.

as for benitez: i think it could be an age issue. dude is 35, so it's possible he understands that a 3 year contract may be more of a risk for the team....?

Actually, Benitez is just 33, so age shouldn't be much of a factor. Most first basemen are fairly productive to age 36.
And as for performance, that shouldn't be an issue either, dude is raking. .345 avg, .385 obp, 12 doubles, 4 home runs, 16 rbi. He's just one double behind the league leader in the category.
