2034 Minor League Players of the Year

#1 Post by Board of the PEBA »

The Playoffs are here - and the Rodriguez Cup is quickly gaining in the rear view mirror, which means it's that time of year again - Awards Season is nearly upon us!! But you can get a head start with your individual Organization Awards for top Minor League Hitter and Pitcher!! You know the drill... If you want to do a bigger posting in you blogs (or ~gasp~ home page, and add to your CP haul) - knock yourselves out! Just a listing here is sufficient, with a link back to your blog or Front page article, is fine.

Please use the following formatting when you make your announcement. Make sure to list players by their hyperlinked name, current full position (e.g. "SP" rather than just "P", "CF" rather than just "OF") and league level as listed in OOTP:
Proper formatting of awards announcement wrote:
  • Aurora Minor League Hitter of the Year: 3B Jorge Soto (AAA)
  • Aurora Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Andres Canales (AAA)
Qualifications for Minor League Player of the Year Award
  • Players must have been in your organization since the start of the major league season (i.e. players acquired during the season through the draft or via trade are excluded from candidacy).
  • Players must have at least 300 PA (batters), or 10 starts or 40 appearances (pitchers) at the minor league level.
  • Players must not be older than 26 (or must have turned 27 after July 1).

2034 Hitter of the Year: 2B Michael "XXX" Roberts
Image
It didn't seem quite fair to everyone else to have Roberts be in the same farm system as them this year. Splitting time between Beaufort and Chesapeake, the 3-time all-star futures game goer Roberts distinguished himself with his major league-ready bat, walloping 14 homeruns and showing his discipline, sporting an OBP over .350. The perennial number 1 prospect in all of PEBA even had a brief stint on the major league squad near the end of the season... his results after 7 games? A batting line of .304/.407/.609. Not bad for a 21 year old.

2034 Pitcher of the Year: P Miguel Boroa
Image
Boroa came over from Kalamazoo near the trade deadline in 2033 as an underperforming yet promising prospect that hadn't really tasted success up to that point in his career. However, the trade seemed to have sparked something in the young hurler and he has since grown into one -- if not THE -- most exciting pitching prospect Florida has in their farm. Now, that might speak more to the state of our stable of arms, but Boroa is definitely a dude you can dream on. He sports three potentially plus offerings and manages to keep the balls on the ground for the most part, giving up just three home runs in over 130 innings this year. Floundering between rookie and short A for his first three years, Boroa took a step forward, tossing 31 frames in A ball this year and efficiently handling the competition. We expect him to take the mound in Beaufort purple next year.

HAR 2034 Minor League Hitter of the Year: LF SCOTT ABERCROMBY (AA)

A 22-year old lefty from the Scottish Borders, Abercromby posted a collective 4.9 WAR between A and AA, with 36 Home Runs and 79 RBIs. The 2031 6th-round draft pick is a DH leviathatn in AA.

HAR 2034 Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP GUUS BOOKELMAN (SA)

Say 'Ooststellingwerf" ten times fast. That's the hometown of the neutral-slot south paw who posted a 2.00 ERA in 112 innings for work for the Waikiki Coconuts. Not bad for the 210th overall pick of the 2030 amateur draft. He allowed just one home run this year and struck out 105.

KALAMAZOO'S MINOR LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

Kalamazoo Minor League Hitter of the Year: RF Ian Vader (A)

The Nampa Moccasins had a difficult year. For many of Vader's teammates, this led to year-long slumps. Vader's biggest flaw this season was his ability to regularly put balls in play, but when the ball did meet the bat, defenders regularly remained in their positions knowing they had no chance of fielding the ball. With 37 home runs this season, Vader was a menace. Vader looks to take this power to AA next season, and, if he can improve his contact, make his way to AAA.

Kalamazoo Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Brett Johnson (AA)

Brett Johnson had a fine 2033 season, but nothing to indicate he was ready for a promotion. After his 17-3 2034 campaign, he will certainly be ready for AAA competition. Johnson lead the team with 17 wins, and held a respectable 2.52 ERA.

Tempe Minor League Hitter of the Year:
LF Ken Parker (Quebec City Frenchies, AA)
Acquired in a trade during the 2032 season from Charleston, Parker finally started harnessing his significant talent during the 2034 campaign with Quebec City. Parker hammered AA pitching for 34 home runs and a .508 SLG percentage during the season. While it’s unlikely he’ll ever hit for a high average, Parker also brings solid defensive and outstanding base running skills to the table as he swiped 49 bags on his way to delivering a 7.2 WAR on the year.

Tempe Minor League Pitcher of the Year:
SP Jack Ring (Calexico Reins, A)
Despite the presence of several more touted and decorated pitchers within the organization, none outshone Ring in his first year of full season ball with Calexico. Making 24 starts which covered 173 innings, Ring averaged a strikeout per inning and maintained an ERA of 2.24 to go with a 0.87 WHIP. A third round pick in the 2033 draft, Ring will showcase his skills as a member of the Quebec City rotation in 2035 playing for Tempe’s AA affiliate.

Toyama 2034 Minor League Batter of the Year: LF Reggie Raines (SA)
Image
The newest in the line of Raines, Reggie, took a big step up in Osakasayama this season. The 20-year-old hit .265/.373 and found his power stroke with 22 homeruns and 69 RBI's. The 6'4" lefty has high expectations set by his father but has been moving very quickly up the lower minors.

Toyama 2034 Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Alfredo 'Destiny' Vargas (AAA)
Image
Vargas made his mark in AAA this season with a 15-7 record and 1.72 ERA earning himself a brief September call-up Toyama. Slated to take over the 5th rotation spot next season, Vargas could be a future starlet in the making.

Aurora Announces 2034 Minor League Players of the Year
by Francis Ferry, NLN baseball beat writer

Minor League Hitter of the Year
Image
C Pedro de la Cruz (AAA)

Pedro de la Cruz, who has been biding his time at AAA the past three full seasons for Aurora, was originally the 16th overall selection of the New Orleans Trendsetters back in 2027 - after a high school career that included 4-All Star nominations and an International High School Championship with the Canuck Battlecats - for whom he hit a career .281 with 24 HR and 72 RBI. While with the Trendsetters he won the 2029 Platinum Stick as C in the NAFTA-BCL, and in 2030 he was a AA All-Star, won the Platinum Stick for the GNL-ATAL and was runner-up in the Outstanding Hitter voting. At AAA in 2031, he was selected to the Futures game before he was dealt to the Aurora Borealis as part of the deal that sent Bob Burns to the Bayou.

With the Borealis, he won the AAA-RML Platinum stick, as he has in 2034, along with making the RML All-Star time this year. In three-and-a-half seasons at Thornton he's hit .260 with 47 HR - 17 this year, and 176 RBI. He's had 98 AB at the major league level and has 21 H, 2 HR and 9 RBI.

Aurora has been waiting for Pedro's chance to make the big league roster full time, and 2034 was thought to be the target date - and then 2035, but things have gotten complicated for the 26-year old on Opening Day catcher. Domingo Gutierrez saw his contract vest this season, and 'Fido' Castro has an option on his deal. Combined with de la Cruz' poor defensive skills, it had been thought he may find himself as the regular DH - and then Claudio Hernandez was acquired, with at least two more seasons on his contract. How Pedro will fit in for the 2035 campaign will be an intriguing storyline this offseason.

Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Image
SP Victorio 'Javelin' Guerra (SA/A)

Victorio 'Javelin' Guerra was a summer of 2030 International Free Agent signee by the Borealis, signing for a bonus of $1.4M, and after two seasons at Aurora's International Complex, he was promoted to Montserrat in June of 2032, where, despite a partially separated shoulder, he made 11-starts and posted a 3.30 ERA and a 4-3 mark. He improved somewhat in 2033, with a 2.93 ER, where he reduced his walks and increased his strikeouts - showing some great promise. This year at Mokule'ia he was on fire and accomplished an extremely rare feat - he threw back-to-back no-hitters against Kilauea and Mauna Loa - striking out a combined 18 and walking just 1. Despite allowing just 3-runs in the month of June, he did not win the Pitcher of the month award - but it did earn him a promotion as his Short A season finished with a 7-0 record in 9 GS and a 0.63 ERA, with 69 K, 10 BB in 71.2 IP. With the Rapids Blancos he had a 6-6. record in 14 starts, with a 2.45 ERA, with 68 K and 17 BB in 84 IP.

Guerra is described by the coaches as having excellent stuff, and features an array of pitches, much like Armando Batista - a dynamic fastball/curveball/forkball combo to go with a decent slider and a 'show me' change that serves a purpose - but barely. The 21-year old Dominican has a bright future, and the immediate question will be whether he begins 2035 at SLRC in A Ball or if he'll be in Quebec for the start of the AA season for Gatineau. We would expect to see the first of 'Javelin' in the fall of 2036, and perhaps making an impact for Aurora in 2037.

YUMA 2034 Minor League Players of the Year

#10 Post by Arroyos »

Yuma Minor League Players of 2034

P YOUNG-PIL PIN (AAA)

When Yuma gave up RP Dave Hull to acquire Pin, some PEBA folk questioned the trade, but Pin has lived up to all expectations, moving quickly up the Yuma organization to AAA this year, including a "cup of coffee" visit to the Bigs. We still have high hopes for this kid.

CF Ken Schit (A)

Schit has been anything but shitty. He lead the Salton Sea Kilmers in batting average and RBIs, and while his numbers .262/.345/.373 may seem pretty shitty in some organizations, in the shithouse known as the Yuman Beings, Shit ain't too shitty.

takeo.png

Kentucky Minor Hiter of the Year 2034
1B Takeo Miyagi #51
Jefferson County Independence (KEN) GBB AAA

Takeo rised through the ranks quickly, and ripped it up in A and AA to earn 13 games in AAA at years end.

He slashed a WAR of 5.4 in 108 games. He had 111 hits/.321 AVG/21HR/56RBI/962 OPS

Hands down the best output by far

Kentucky Minor Pitcher of the year 2034 is:

lj.png

Luis Jimenez had another banner year and a brief stint in the majors. He should certainly compete for spot next year and seems a certainty by 2036.

Jumping from A to AAA his production barely slipped going from a WAR of 4.7 to 4.2.

He pitched 134 Innings with a 2.55 ERA, an FIP of 2.1, Whip of 1.1 and respectable K/9 of 7.7. Not going to wow you, but lull you. Should be a lefty gem soon

Niihama Minor League Hitter of the Year:

3B/SS Jin-Song Zambrano
started his first full year at SS, where the Ghosts hope he might stick, and responded with the most productive hitting season in the Niihama organization.
That's a quote from the announcement of last year's winner, IF Miguel Fernandez, but it's oddly exactly the same story as Zambrano's. After his offseason acquisition, Zambrano joined a talented group of Ghosts hitting prospects in AA and took the organization by storm by leading that group into the AAA playoffs. JZ made quick work of his tenure at AA in the Ghosts org and was promoted to AAA along with MacVurich, Stowe, and E-Rod. He displaced Fernandez from SS with his glove, but Fernandez didn't seem bothered as he abused AAA pitching to the tune of a 188 wRC+ while playing LF and 2B. JZ, meanwhile, showed that not only can he stick at SS, but his bat is quickly approaching PEBA readiness. His .317/.386/.556 slash was good for a .406 wOBA, 214 wRC+, and 7.5 WAR. He won the AAA MVP with 24/30 first place votes.

Niihama Minor League Pitcher of the Year
:

SP Fernando Valdez looked like every bit the top lefty SP prospect in PEBA, as he took A ball by storm at age 19. In his 21 starts, all at A, he went 13-3 with minimal run support, leveraging his fastball/slider/splitter combo to strike out 7.8 per nine and earn a 1.65 ERA on the season. His 4.7 WAR was actually second in the organization's minors behind AAA starter Yajirobei Matsunaga, another contender for this award, but ultimately his other stats (WHIP, HR/9, ERA+) looked better and was given the nod.

Re: 2034 Minor League Players of the Year

#14 Post by Hitmen »

Echoing Dan's love for his franchise and wanting to get involved early in building his story from his and Brian's transition from the WIL to PEBA; "..Since the WIL is somewhat of an unorthodox platform without an actual minor league system, I’ll need to be a bit loose in candidacy for MiPOY awards. Since the competition level of the WIL is more AAA than PEBA, if a player meets age criteria and hasn’t had significant WIL experience before this season, I’ll consider them eligible.”

New Jersey will follow suit and provide our Minor League Players of the year, that played a full season at the WIL level, but with minimal to no prior experience. This was a much easier task on the pitching side as we had a couple rookies make their debut, but much harder on the hitting side as we are much older on that end. I look forward to revisiting prior years and making selections where I clearly lapsed at the tail end of my tenure in New Jersey before the time of the Dark Times, and also to provide honorary selections for the team's WIL stints as I don't like gaps in history.
New Jersey’s 2034 Minor League Hitter of the Year:
RF Gelana Naybet; coming off a breakout 2033 that saw Naybet nab the Rookie of the Year honors, Naybet followed up the season with another hard-hitting outing in Right Field. A pillar of consistency over two full seasons in the WIL, Naybet had 78 runs, 131 hits, 23 doubles, 23 HR, 77 RBI, while hitting .266/.358/.457 to follow it up with a very eerily similar 78 runs, 139 hits, 22 doubles, 23 HR, 78 RBI, while hitting .248/.350/.429 the following year. Being released by the San Antonio Calzones of Laredo in 2031, Naybet had a lot to prove with his arrival in the WIL. A similar story for most youngsters finding their way to the WIL, Naybet is now out to prove that his solid play is not a fluke and can translate to consistency at the PEBA level where he was not able to reach past the AA Monterey Sea Lions level.

New Jersey’s 2034 Minor League Pitcher of the Year:
SP Yub Issa; signed in the offseason to a two-year deal, the 24 year old previously never made it farther than a short stint in 2031 with the AAA ball Camaguey Tinajon of Havana. Being claimed off waivers, or outright released, Issa's growth was not going according to plans quick enough, albeit solid play at all levels. Being snapped up by New Jersey as soon as he was available, Issa went on to show what everyone else was missing. Issa led the WIL league with a 17-6 record, 2.59 ERA, 163 K, and a 1.12 WHIP. At just 24 years old, Issa has a lot to prove now that he returns to the PEBA as a back of the rotation lock for the Hitmen's young rotation. He will be entering 2035 with a dirty moustache and a chip on his shoulder to keep proving doubters wrong.

Juan Jose Torres has been selected by the Trendsetters as the team's Minor League Hitter of the Year.
In his second season with Bridgetown in the Rookie league, he batted an impressive .337 , walking nearly as
often as he struck out; giving him a fantastic .423 OBP and leading the team with 20 doubles (tied with Yue-Jiu Ts'ong).
For 2035, he is expected to move up to Short-A Anchorage, and could move up the ladder further during the season,
if his impressive performance continues.

Lou Long had a fantastic season with High-A Ensenada, and was thus selected as the Trendsetters Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
The first-round draft pick from 2033 finished the '34 season with a 9-7 record, a 1.44 ERA, an 0.84 WHIP and a 5.0 WAR in 25 starts.
Long, who turns 23 in a few weeks, was seen as a leader on an Ensenada ballclub that qualified for the post-season for the first time
in 12 seasons. He will likely start 2035 with the AA club in Delaware.
