Gilberto Fernández

A close fought game which went into extras, both teams will have aching arms in the morning as each team used 6 pitchers. San Antonio's pitchers throwing close to 200 (193) with Havana's surpassing the 200 mark with 215, the starting pitchers paid the price with Havana's Kenny Ashley lasting less than 4 innings being replaced by Roberto Guzmán

Wether the win was worth it for the Calzones will need to be seen, as Anthony Lee the Calzones starting pitcher lasted 5 innings pitching over 20 pitches more than Ashley.

The Calzones will be happier with the performances of Dan Neighbour and Yasuhide Suto who had both been struggling of late for form.

However if the Calzones are to have a run at the play offs they need more days like this from Gilberto Fernández who had 3 rbi from 3 hits but as not lived up to expectations, it will take more days like today from Fernández for the Calzones to break there streak of 15 seasons without a visit to the play offs.

Gilberto Fernández helped his team muscle past the Havana Leones, 5-1. In the game, the San Antonio first baseman was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. The winning pitcher was Juan Garanzuay. His record is now 3-2. The right-hander went 6.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits for the Calzones of Laredo. The win has San Antonio at 14-18.

Luis Cedeño, the 2022 Wunderkind Award winner , had a direct impact on the outcome. Cedeño contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the first inning to put San Antonio up, 1-0.

"I don't feel you win baseball games by working harder than the other team or 'wanting it more,'" Fernández told the San Antonio Gazette. "You win just by scoring more runs."

San Antonio got a terrific performance from pitcher Vicente Díaz, but it wasn't enough to beat the Havana Leones. Havana won the Campos Peloteros contest, 5-4. Díaz threw 7.0 innings of 3-hit ball for the losing team. Corey Robinson, now 1-1, picked up the win in relief. He allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 2 innings. Ricardo Pérez locked down his 9th save.

Havana took a 5-4 lead on Pedro Rodríguez's 3rd home run of the season. The 2-run home run came off San Antonio pitcher Yasuhide Suto in the bottom of the eighth.

"Both teams played hard," said Havana manager Juan García.

Havana raised its record to 18-16 with the win.
