2033 All-Star Game

#1 Post by Borealis »

The 2033 All-Star Game will be held as part of Thursday's (5/27) sim and we will (plan on) have a live broadcast of the game right here in this thread!! We will have a special 4pm PT cut-off for exports so that I can do all the grunt work of setting up the All-Star teams and do the broadcast. Game time is tentatively scheduled for 5pm PT/8pm ET - but I'll begin when I've got it ready to roll. Grab your tickets and a tall Cuba Libre on ice and a tasty Cubano! Our hosts for this years game, the Havana Leones, have the Campos Peloteros all dressed up for the festivities.

All-Star voting has closed. All-Star rosters will be posted here (prior to) with Monday's sim.

The Mayor of Havana and members of the National government of Cuba join the Havana Leones welcome fans from around the globe to the 27th PEBA All-Star Game! This year's game will beheld at Campos Peloteros, home of the Havana Leones and will be the first hosted by the Leones (though as the Edo Battousai, they hosted the 2013 LRS All-Star game) and is the 2nd PEBA Midsummer Classic held in the Caribbean - San Juan hosted the 2026 game at PRTC Stadium, a SL 4-2, 10-inning win, with Palm Springs' Felipe Dias the MVP - hitting what would be the game winning homer in the 10th.

Amongst the celebrities who attended the opening festivities, in the Plaza Vieja, was former-PEBA Commissioner and son of PEBA-founding father and Aurora Borealis owner, John Rodriguez, Sr - John Rodriguez, Jr. 'JR, Jr', who has been quite reclusive upon his retirement from the PEBA leadership, is famously proud of his Cuban heritage and told the crowd that 'this was a game he couldn't miss.'

Baseball may be Cuba’s passion, but fishing – and in particular deep seas fishing, maybe it’s preoccupation. There are many sport fish that can be had in the Caribbean – dorado, wahoo, barracuda – and of course marlin, but this time of the year, the fish that is in season is bonito; tuna.

This year, as part of the All-Star festivities, those who did not suffer from sea sickness were offered the chance to partake in the PEBA Deep Sea Challenge. Players were split into groups of three and sent out on boats with expert fishermen, to bring back the largest fish over a 5-hour excursion. The fish would go towards the evening’s All-Star dinner, but the bulk would go towards feeding the impoverished of this island nation.

Eight boats headed out at 9 am, with 24 excited All-Stars, and it didn’t take long before the Mar Hermosa began pulling in fish. Bartolo Mora, Ricardo Mateo, and Bill Knight each had bites within minutes of reaching the fishing grounds. Bonito is a powerful fish, and the Maulers’ lone representative quickly learned that lesson, struggling to bring in a tuna that had ‘better things to do’. Mateo, on the otherhand, a pro when it comes to fishing, after all his seasons in Havana, looked at ease with the rod, toying with his catches as he brought them in.

Over on the Señora Pescadores, Jim Fox, Logan Malone and Mauro Mata began looking a little blue once they reached the open sea and it's mild chop – the threesome turning around and heading to the dock before their lines even got wet. Mata, Bakersfield’s young catcher, was paticularly sheepish upon returning to land, “We used to fish with Grandpa all the time – I feel like I let his spirit down.”

On the Atún Rey, the battle was fierce. Bill Jones, Pedro Ferringo and Ryan Tate were strapped in and going after some monsters. Each pulled in a pair of fish that would end up in the Top Ten of caught fish on this day. The former-members of the Aurora Borealis and the current member of the sqaud no doubt had plenty to chat about – with the two members of the IL All-Star team challenging the Borealis’ closer.

It was on the Mares Plateados where the winning catch would come – amongst a collection of ‘small fry’. Duluth 2B Noah Hill battled a 160 lb tuna for over an hour before he pulled him aboard to cheers from his fishing trio of Pedro Ferringo and Bob Burns – who was shut out, with no catches on the day.

As all the boats and fish arrived at the dock, and the weighing began – and finished – Hill’s catch was 30lbs greater than that of Bill Jones’ top catch and 35lbs better than Pedro Ferringo’s. After the award ceremony, and the fish having been hauled away to feed a multitude of folks in Havana, Noah Hill was asked about his fishing experience – being from land-locked Alberta. “You wouldn’t think us inland Canadians would be into the big sea fishing, eh, but let me tell you, ice fishing is no simple task – and in the cold? Dealing with that tuna was a piece of cake, eh.”

The All-Star festivities around town on the eve of the game are reminiscent of the annual Carnival in Santiago de Cuba, which is scheduled for later in the month. As evening came, the streets of Havana were an explosion of color and sound, as drums of all varieties were rhythmically beating. The streets were full of people dancing the rumba and salsa. Conga lines weaved through the city - getting longer and longer as time went by; lines merging into one another as paths crossed.

For the native and tourist alike, the visual stimulus was matched with the culinary delights that were sold by hundreds of street vendors - lines for the empanadas seemed endless. Ornately attired horse pulling elegant carriages filled one street, another was a parade old, cherry, cars - Fords, Chevy's, Buicks from the pre-revolution days - still running, and drawing cheers from all.

Masked revelers and masked performers filled make-shift stages through the downtown area - traditional performances and some that touched on the old Italian Comedia, drew laughter and raucous applause as the night got old.

Meanwhile at the Gran Teatro of Havana, the PEBA Red Carpet show filled the Parque Central outside the historic building, where the starting line-ups were revealed, the Fishing Champs were revealed (Noah Hill biggest catch, Ferringo, Jones and Tate most prolific boat), and where PEBA Commissioner 'Harry' Castle announced the sight of the 2034 All-Star Game - Madison, Wisconsin, where the Malts will welcome the baseball world to their brand-spanking new ballpark: The Malthouse.

Although the dancing in the street, the drums, the cheers lasted late into the early hours of All-Star Day, as the clock struck mid-night, a fireworks show lit the skies above the mouth of the Port of Havana - people lining the Malecon and the area surrounding the Castillo de la Real Fuerza for prime viewing.
