2032 Minor League Players of the Year

#1 Post by Borealis »

The Playoffs are here - and the Rodriguez Cup is quickly gaining in the rear view mirror, which means it's that time of year again - Awards Season is nearly upon us!! But you can get a head start with your individual Organization Awards for top Minor League Hitter and Pitcher!! You know the drill... If you want to do a bigger posting in you blogs (or ~gasp~ home page, and add to your CP haul) - knock yourselves out! Just a listing here is sufficient, with a link back to your blog or Front page article, is fine.

Please use the following formatting when you make your announcement. Make sure to list players by their hyperlinked name, current full position (e.g. "SP" rather than just "P", "CF" rather than just "OF") and league level as listed in OOTP:
Proper formatting of awards announcement wrote:
  • Aurora Minor League Hitter of the Year: 3B Jorge Soto (AAA)
  • Aurora Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Andres Canales (AAA)
Qualifications for Minor League Player of the Year Award
  • Players must have been in your organization since the start of the major league season (i.e. players acquired during the season through the draft or via trade are excluded from candidacy).
  • Players must have at least 300 PA (batters), or 10 starts or 40 appearances (pitchers) at the minor league level.
  • Players must not be older than 26 (or must have turned 27 after July 1).

Aurora Announces 2032 Minor League Players of the Year
by Francis Ferry, NLN baseball beat writer

Minor League Hitter of the Year
Image
LF Gabriel Rodriguez (AAA)

Gabriel Rodriguez was the 32nd player chosen in the 2030 draft (supplemental round), out of UAB, where he was a two-time USCBA All-Star (’28 & ’29) – with his junior year (’29) being his high-water season: .360/.401/.677. G-Rod finished his 4-year career as a starter for UAB with a .320 average, with 71-2B, 32 HR and 113 RBI.

He is the quintessential Aurora hitter – high contact, if not a powerful bat, keeps the strikeouts low and putting the onus on the defense. Rodriguez is not the swiftest of runners, but he plays excellent defense at the corner outfield spots. Last season he hit .322 for AA Gatineau and was a Great North League All-Star, and this year, at Thornton, he hit .311 with 8 HR and 35 RBI for the low scoring FasTrax – a season that also earned him GBB All-Star recognition. A mid-season ankle injury that was slow to respond to treatment ended his season and kept him out of a September call-up.

Aurora’s scouts seem to feel Gabriel is as ready as he will get, and there’s expectations that he will earn a spot out of spring training. With Nick Heath seeking a healthy pay raise, and the (hopeful) possibility of Harry Hutchins opting out of his contract, Aurora will certainly be looking for an outfielder.

Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Image
SP Gordon Dobson (A/AA)

Last year we were touting the feats of an unheralded pitcher, and we once again fins ourselves in that same position with this years Pitcher of the Year – Gordon Dobson. 2032 Pitcher of the year came to Aurora as a minor league free agent after being selected in the 9th round by the Florida Featherheads in 2027 – straight out of high school (Brophy Prep). After being an ISF All-Star his senior year, as a reliever, with a 1.47 ERA over 36.2 IP and 46 K and 4 BB, his first pro experience was a rough one, as at Ewa Beach, in the Hawaiian League, walking 53 in 69.2 IP – and just 13 K. He was equally poor at Mexicali the following year – and after 14 games at A Ball, Florida released him – and he was out of ball for 2-years, before Aurora signed him to a minor league deal in 2030.

With Aurora, back in Hawaii, he spent 2030-31 at Mokule’ia, where he combined for a 10-13 record and a 2.32 ERA, with 144 K and 64 BB. And being selected to the 2031 Surf and Snow All-Star Game. This year he began the year at SLRC and was 3-1 in 5 GS and a 1.59 ERA before being promoted to Gatineau – where he caught fire. His first three AA games were shut outs – 26 IP – and 28 scoreless in a row overall, as he went on to finish 13-4 with a 1.41 ERA, 110 K and 22 BB over 146.2 IP. His ERA was tops in the PCAL and his 4.4 WAR over 20 GS was bested only Sioux Falls’ (FAR) Ben Holman (4.9 over 20 GS). Only Toyohira’s (TOY) Juan Encarnacion had more wins (15), though in 29 GS.

It’s hard to imagine where Dobson will end up – beyond Thornton in 2033. But for this moment in time, he was clearly Aurora’s top arm in the minor league organization, and this years award winner.

EDIT: Dobson was named the 2032 PCAL Pitcher of the Year.

Press release from The Malthouse: Revolving Tap;

I am committed to reveal the recently researched gap years as well! Make sure to join me in our Malthouse blog for who the Canton/Madison Minor League stars were for the 2024-2028 and 2007-2013 years.

Madison's 2032 Minor League Hitter of the Year:
3B Tony Velázquez (AA) repeats in 2032 as the Minor League Hitter of the Year with an even more impressive showing after skipping the Middle Bass Vintners (Hi-A) and jumping straight to Youngstown Thunder (AA). After the 2031 campaign's .282/.379/.480 for the year in 107 games played, and a WAR of 4.9 for the Eagles, Tony put together a .305/.361/.572 campaign over 106 games, and a WAR of 6.5. Tony continues to show his bright future and eyes will be on Tony in the Spring on 2033. Does Madison continue to let the young 20 year old gain experience and grow naturally in the minors, or are we in store for a massive youth movement push in Madison in 2033? This year's runner up is teammate 1B Javier 'Pokey' Aguilar who put in an impressive year as well.

Madison's 2032 Minor League Pitcher of the Year:
SP Jorge Lorenzo (AA) repeats in a recurring theme this year as winner for Minor League Pitcher of the year. Another impressive improvement as Jorge got the support to put up a 16-6 season, a 2.32 ERA, and a 0.96 WHIP while throwing 148 Ks. Once again, Jorge faced tough competition from Jorge Camarillo (AA). Both pitchers continued to push each other for top pitcher on the team.

Havana's 1st round pick (28th 0overall) in 2031 broke out in 2032. In 438 AB he led the club with .253 AVG 24 HR and 70 RBI. Scouts are looking for him to gain power and improve his contact as he progresses.

Batter of the Year
Jose "Smoke" Rios
Image
Jose jumped onto the scene this year and completely dominated rookie league as an 18 year old. Over the course of 74 games, the Farstriders' 4th ranked prospect hit .365 with an OPS of .959. He backed it up with a positive defensive metrics as well. August saw Rios at his most promising and secured him this award. In that span, he slashed .435/.478/.702 which led to back-back IBC player of the week awards and being named player of the month.

Near the tail end of the seasons, the 18 year old was promoted to Ewa Beach where he played very well again in his short stint at both the tail end of the regular season and in the post-season.

Rios ticks all the boxes for the type of hitters that the Farstriders crave: balanced approach youngsters who can do a little bit of everything. The future is bright for young Rios.

Pitcher of the Year
Edgardo "Sureshot" Trevino
Image
The first repeat from Florida in the Hannahs era, Trevino has continued to dazzle scouts and fans alike. Already through 4 rungs of the ladder in just 3 years of pro ball, Sureshot has been busy making an argument to be included on the 2033 roster. The 21 year old started 21 games for AA Beaufort where he pitched a stingy 2.06 ERA and a whopping 9.73 K/9 despite much older competition.

The highlight of his season was undoubtedly his August 19th start vs the 100-win Den Bosch Dykes where Trevino showed the true depth of his talent. Despite an incredibly close 1-0 game, Trevino managed to throw a complete game no-hitter, striking out 9 and only walking 3.

Similar to Rios, Sureshot is the quinessential Florida pitcher. High velocity, high K/9, good mix of effective pitches. The concern is the same as it was last year -- can he go deep enough to be viable as a starter? He averaged 6 IP in AA this year, but there is concerns about whether that will be enough. Regardless, even in a set-up or closer role, Sureshot seems destined for Jacksonville in the near future.

Batters
2031 Pedro "King" Coronado
2030 Yosuke "Tofu" Morimoto
2029 Tiburcio Penela
2028 Jose Villareal

Pitchers
2031 Edgardo "Sureshot" Trevino
2030 Miguel "Hot Streak" Serrano
2029 Carlos Valverde
2028 Luppe "Terrible" van Dam

San Juan Minor League Players of the Year

PITCHER OF THE YEAR
JuanOrtiz.png
Perhaps the Coqui should have called Juan Ortiz (5-2, 0.88) up instead of relying on oft-injured guys like Pete Scammell and Keith Dupree to recover old form.

In four spring training appearances, Ortiz threw nine innings, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out nine. But the 23-year old Ortiz had pitched just seven innings of AA ball to that point.

Instead he was sent down to Santo Domingo (AAA) where his 45 saves eclipsed the previous team record by nine and was fourth highest ever in Global Baseball Brotherhood history behind Manual Galloca (55), Eric Huot (46) and Kyoji Uchiyama (46), the latter two reaching the mark on the tail end of their careers.

HITTER OF THE YEAR
JohnLortie.png
It was not a strong year for hitters. Some prospects stumbled early and others fell off after torrid starts. Santurce centerfielder Todd Davis led all in WAR (5.9) but his 18 home runs in AA were a disappointment after hitting 30 in A ball the year before.

Instead the award goes to Homer's (SA) John Lortie. Despite hitting just .238 the last two months of the season, Lortie finished at .267, .369, .429. More importantly he set Homer team records for RBI (84) and doubles (31), topping the Alaskan League this year in both categories as well. He also won the league’s Platinum Stick Award at second base.

Niihama Minor League Hitter of the Year:

Two names were debated for this award, and while Rookie league catcher Julio Elias had an outstanding year (.314/.370/.508), this year's award goes to AA 3B Darius Freeman. Freeman's 5.1 WAR was far and away the best among Niihama prospects. He earned that WAR by doing a little bit of everything: he played solid defense, he got on base (OBP .360), he hit for power (ISO .185), and he ran well to boot (29 SB @ 74% and 5.2 BsR).

Niihama Minor League Pitcher of the Year:

Again two names rose to the top of the list, with star pupil Yuji Yamashita the runner-up to this year's awardee: SP Anthony MacDonald. While Yamashita may have been asked to do a little more than MacDonald in making his professional debut and the jump to AA, MacDonald's overall performance was too consistently good to be topped. Yamashita's 3.3 WAR was third amongst qualified prospects, and his 2.82 FIP was second among qualified SP prospects. MacDonald's 5.3 WAR and 2.23 FIP, however, were tops in both. MacDonald split the year between SS-A and A ball, earning 2.7 and 2.5 WAR respectively.

Offensive Player of the year: 1b Sixto López (A) - Picked up 3 years ago, Sixto has been a monster at the plate every year and is on track to be in WV in less than 2 years. This year in A ball he hit .273/.376/.551. He had a career high 33 homers (beating his record by 1). He can also field 1b, so Mr. López looks to have a super bright future.

Pitcher of the year: Monzaemon Nakashima (AA) - This year WV had 5 guys that the team had to pick a winner from. All would have won the award on any other team, but the winner this year is Monzaemon Nakashima. Not only was he dominate in AA, he broke the strikeout record for AA. He recorded 239 K's and then in the playoff run he allowed only 1 run in the final 4 games he started. He was only 11-5 due to some unlucky hitting behind him this year. In 28 games, he had 176 IP, only allowed 91 hits and 36 BB with an ERA of 1.79 and a WHIP of .72. There are rumors that Monzaemon might be skipping AAA to head straight to West Virginia.

Hitter of year:
2032: 1b Sixto López (A)
2031: 1b Francisco Lucador (AAA)
2030: 1b Francisco Lucador (AA)
2029: RF Javier Drake (AAA)

2025: 1b Ryosei Ohayashi (AAA)
2024: 1b Ron Copeland (A)
2023: 2b Carlos Garza (AA)

Pitcher of year
2032: Monzaemon Nakashima (AA)
2031: Jose Tojeira (AAA)
2030: : P Juan Guerrero (AA)
2029: Orlando Rúbio (A)

Re: 2032 Minor League Players of the Year

#14 Post by Evas »

SS 2032 Minor league hitter of the Year LF Chris "No Trump" Krebs (AA)
Krebs currently stands as the #73 rated prospect by OSA and the 4th highest ranked hitting prospect in AAA, and for good reason. Krebs' 2031 season in AA was mediocre (114 OPS+ & 1.0 WAR in 288 PA). Though it is significant to note that he achieved that line coming directly out of college - completely skipping SS-A and A ball. His 2032 in AA was much more impressive (141 OPS+ & 4.8 WAR in 609). He will start 2033 in AAA, but some are pushing for him to make the Evas straight out of camp. Either way, the odds are he gets his first taste of PEBA in 2033.

SS 2032 Minor League Pitcher of the Year SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi (R)
SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi was absolutely dominant in 2032 in SS-A (215 ERA+ & 7.0 WAR in 22 starts & 158 IP). At only 20 years old at the start of 2033, he will start the season in A. The pace of promotions could start to accelerate now. It is very possible he ends 2033 in AA or higher. The future is very bright for the Evas' top pitching prospect and he is getting closer to making an impact in PEBA.

Follow Up on 2029's winners:
  • C Connor 'Click' Clavell took a significant step backwards in 2032. His productivity nosedived, as his arbitration driven salary continued to increase. Odds are that Click will be back with the Evas in 2033, but even that isn't a sure thing.
  • SP Andrew Thornton has settled in to an organizational filler role in AA. That seems to be as high as he is destined to go in the PEBA-verse.
Follow Up on 2030's winners:
  • 1B Jeremy Craig struggled mightily in Manchester in his first real shot in PEBA (78 OPS+ in 561 PA). Still, scouts hold out some him and he could still have a productive future in Manchester where he should get consistent playing time. But the early results were not encouraging.
  • SP Takesi Ishikawa posted another solid season in SA in 2032 (158 ERA+ in 132.1 IP). He will start 2033 in A-Ball and is expected to continue to progress, because he always puts in the work.
Follow Up on 2031's winners:
  • 1B Manny Lara continued to impress in 2032 in SS (146 OPS+ in 475 PA). He will start 2033 in AAA and could soon be knocking at the door in SS. The question will be whether or not it will be at catcher.
  • SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi won the SS MiL pitcher of the year award again in 2032. Expect him to do it again in 2033.

Palm Springs Minor League Player Awards 2032
Image
Palm Springs' Minor League Hitter of the Year for 2032 is shortstop Benjamin Gentileschi. This highly regarded Argentine was signed as an international amateur free agent in 2029. Gentileschi began making waves almost immediately with good production at Rookie League Asmara in 2030 and was steadily promoted up the minor league ladder. The club's faith was rewarded in 2032 as "BG" responded with his best year yet, socking 13 home runs for National City en route to winning the 2032 NAFTA A BCL Platinum Stick Award at shortstop. A good communicator and consensus-seeker, Gentileschi rates high in leadership, and appears on many of OSA's top 100 prospect lists. With any luck he may one day inherit the mantle of the legendary Royce Raines in Palm Springs.

Palm Springs' Minor League Pitcher of the Year for 2032 is starter César González. This promising young Cuban was selected by the Codgers in the supplemental round of the 2031 draft after a sterling college career at Keio University, in which he helped the Unicorns win the International College Championship three our of his four college seasons! His senior year was capped off by his selection to the International Collegiate Baseball Association All-Star Game and also winning the 2031 ICOL PL Outstanding Pitcher Award. Once getting his feet wet in the Palm Springs system, he was soon back to his impressive ways. At Hi-A National City for the 2032 season, he threw 135 strikeouts for the Bankers with a 1.65 ERA, leading to his being chosen for the 2032 North American Farm Team Affiliation All-Star Game and finishing third in 2032 NAFTA A BCL Outstanding Pitcher Award voting. At this rate, Codgers fans will be hailing César in Palm Springs sooner rather than later.
