Florida Rebranding
Hello! It's been no secret that we've been considering a name change for a while. While the Featherheads name is a self-described name of the Native Americans from the region, to the casual onlooker, the name can be misconstrued as a slur which I would like to avoid. Over the past year or so I've wracked my brain with good names to evolve the Featherheads into, but I can't decide. It is for that reason that I am letting you guys in on the decision process! When Bob did this the other year, I thought it was very cool and since winter meetings are going to be upon us soon, this is a great time for me to start making some decisions.
I've come up with a number of ideas before, so I wanted to break them down for you here. If you think of others, please let me know!
Orange Sox: Quickly becoming one of my favorites, I like the idea of having a "Sox" team in PEBA which we haven't had since WV changed their name many moons ago. The citrus fruit is a staple of the state and has long held a special place in the culture of the state.
Farstriders: A bit of a homage to Warhammer and World of Warcraft, I would imagine this to be more space themed around Cape Canaveral and would feature a rocket logo. Perhaps the Space Coast Farstriders or something?
Rocketeers: This was nearly chosen like a year ago for a new team name. I've soured a bit on the name, but the idea is clear. Rockets = space = Florida. The reason I don't like it as much is that I watched the movie and didn't really like it very much and honestly I think Streets would like to avoid having to purchase the rights.
Hurricanes: An always solid choice, Florida is known for *ahem* inclement weather. I could see this working but it feels a little too blegh.
Swamp Cats: In Florida, alligators are lovingly given the moniker "Swamp Cats". It's a fun way around the 'Gator name while still being quintessentially Floridian. The problem here is that the name sounds like a minor league team, but I really do like this one a lot.
Snow Birds: As an homage to Celebration, Florida, a bird-themed name would fit in well and would be a fun tongue-in-cheek name. Mike already told me he doesn't like this one, but darnit, I still do!
Swashbucklers: When Florida was not yet Florida, pirates were a constant threat. What a great way to relive our past than with baseball?
High Rollers: More of a Streets' name, the Florida High Rollers would be a further encapsulation of all things Drew Streets. We'd have to put an even larger casino in the stadium and become more Vegas than Vegas.
Panhandlers: The puns continue! This one doesn't really fit with anything, I just think it's a funny name. Imagine: The Florida Panhandlers.
I'm open to more names, so please feel free to post your own ideas. I know a lot of people would prefer I keep the team's name similar so I can still be the F-Heads. Perhaps we just call ourselves the F-Heads? That just... doesn't seem like a name a professional organization would call themselves, but maybe I'm wrong! I look forward to seeing how voting commences.
Thank you for your help!

Why no Florida Man?
Seems like the obvious choice.

Just a heads up, Farstriders isn't showing as a poll option. Which is a shame as I was going to vote for it as a nerd.

Re: Florida Rebranding
I think a rebrand is an excellent idea. Florida Man was definitely my vote but that's probably a bit dry. Orange Sox and Swamp Cats are solid, but High Rollers has a uniqueness that can't be beat.

Re: Florida Rebranding
Some good choices there! I'm not familiar with the reference, but there's something about "Florida Farsriders" that rings right to me. But I don't think you can go wrong with any of these.

Wow thank you John! It's great to hear from you and your blessing regarding the Farstriders. I like it a lot, too.
As I kind of expected, votes are kind of all aligned lol. Swamp Cats holds a plurality, but many others are just behind. I appreciate everyone's votes!

You do realize that "Farstriders" will be willfully mispronounced as "Fartriders" or "Farsiders," don't you?Featherheads wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 9:49 amWow thank you John! It's great to hear from you and your blessing regarding the Farstriders. I like it a lot, too.
