Last of Mohicans?

#1 Post by Alleghenies »

Is this going to be the Last of the Mohicans in Mansfield? After winning the Championship in 2024, the Mohicans missed the playoffs with a late season collapse in 2025 and then over the next 4 years while they made the playoffs, they have fallen apart early each year. Management was thinking that maybe a change of venue is what is needed and had been scoping out other towns for stadiums and rumor is they might have it narrowed down to one. So, is 2030 going to be the swansong for the team that the locals have shown lots of love for since 2007? We shall find out.
Before the playoffs started, Joe Randall long time manager, who has come to love the locals like his own family spoke to his team. He told them they needed to win the championship for the local fans and the city of Mansfield. He said leave all your selfish reasons for winning at the door and remember that none of these guys would be here if not for the locals.

In the first series, the Mohicans played Chesapeake Bay Oysters. In a series of 2 evenly matched teams, the Mohicans knew to win their pitching had to shine. In game 1, Ávila came out and gave up a run in the first inning and the fans weren’t happy. It took until the 5th inning for the Mohicans to wake up when they scored 5 runs and went on to win 6-3. In game 2, Jose Vazquez went to the mound and showed why he was one of the pitchers up for minor league pitcher of the year for the organization. He went 6 beautiful innings giving up only 1 run as the team easily beat the Oysters 5-1. Going home for G3, the Mohicans thought they had things rolling especially with Fred Sorley starting. Fred might not get any recognition outside of the organization, but for the last 3 years he has been nothing but excellent for them and G3 was no exception. Sorley gave up 2 runs in the second inning, but that was it and left the game in the 7th down 2-1. The Mohicans would score in the 7th and in the 8th and head into the 9th with the lead, with Donald Lesher closing. Well Lesher did not have it as he gave up the tying home run in the 9th and gave up another homer in the 10th as the Mohicans lost 4-3. Heading into game 4, the team figured they would win with Alfredo Zambrano on the mound. While Zambrano should be in the PEBA, injuries this year have kept him in the minors. Zambrano did nothing to upset anyone, going 8 innings giving up 1 run, but the problem was that after 8 innings and 9 hits, the Mohicans also had only scored 1 run. In the top of the 9th the Mohicans put Cabrera on the mound and unfortunately, he gave up a run and the Mohicans just could get a runner across in the bottom of the inning. With the series tied 2-2, the Mohicans knew that game 5 would be make or break. For game 5, future PEBA star Adam Pemberton took to the mound. The Mohicans started the game out great, getting 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st and continued to hold a 4-1 lead going into the 9th. In the inning prior, Joe Randall went to the pen and brought in Donald Lesher after Doug Davis allowed a runner on. Lesher got out of that inning no problem, but it was the 9th inning that he fell apart again. Lesher in the 9th gave up 2 home runs and a base hit, so with 1 out and a man on 1st the team brought in Cesar Léon for 1 out and the brought in Bill Rice for the final out and the victory 4-3. In game 6, Avila would be heading back to the mound and the Mohican fans were very excited. The problem is going into the bottom of the 3rd, the team was down 2-0. Then in the bottom of the 3rd with 1 out, CF Lamberts hit a long home run and got the team energized. In the next inning the Mohicans scored 2 more and took the lead. Avila would leave in the 7th inning still up 3-2 with Cesar Léon stepping in. In the bottom of the eighth inning the Mohicans would score 5 more runs and put the game out of reach and win 8-2.
