Aurora Announces 2021 Minor League Players of the Year
by Francis Ferry, NLN baseball beat writer
Minor League Hitter of the Year
Image
2B Gabriel McIntyre (AAA)
McIntyre was the 11th player selected in the 2018 draft out of Oregon State, where he had a stellar career. A 3-year starter who had a career .369 average - including a .383 his senior year, and a career .495 OBP. He instantly had an impact for the Aurora organization as he was the HL player of the week a month later and played for the HL All-Star team. He finished his first pro season at .360, then in 2019 he hit .352 at SLRC before a mid-year promotion to AA. This year - his first at AAA, saw him win the RML batting title at .365 and lead the league in OBP, runs and WAR. He received a late season call-up once Thornton was eliminated in the AAA playoffs, and he got into 7 games - struggling a bit with a 4-21. Gabe is not a speedster, nor is he a slugger, but he has consistently shown a high propensity to reach base and has had more walks than strikeouts in his career.

McIntyre is the remaining player of a three way log-jam at 2B in the higher levels. Gone are John Dickson and Jack Speed - both shipped off to Texas (Speed to San Antonio in the Randy Smith deal and Dickson to RGV in a deal for draft picks). Gabe is equally adept at first and that may be his spot on the major league level sooner than later. With 2014 Minor League Hitter of the Year John Foster regressing after a banner 2020 - as Josh Ligonier, and Jose Rivera due to depart for free agency, McIntyre's chances of starting 2022 in the Aurora starting 9 looks pretty good.

CL Manuel Galloca
Galloca was the 14th selection in the 3rd round of the 2017 draft out of West Virginia. His college career was somewhat pedestrian until his senior year when he saved 12 games in 23 appearances with a 1.93 ERA. After the draft he quickly moved up the chain, departing the Islands after being selected to the HL All-Star team and finishing the year at SLRC. He began 2018 at Gatineau where he likewise received a mid-term promotion after 18 saves and a 2.32 ERA. He has spent the past three seasons at AAA Thornton where his numbers are impressive - 22-16, 91 saves and a 2.54 ERA in 207 games; more than enough to warrant a trip to The Show - especially considering only 12 HR in 219 IP. But the call never came. He finally got a late-September call-up, and got into 2 games, giving up 3 runs to Yuma in his last appearance of 2021.

Aurora's bullpen has been close to a total disaster the past two seasons, and with Bryant Burris' late season failures - and keep a close eye on him in the playoffs, Aurora may be in the market for a new closer. Gerardo Rivera would likely get the first crack at that, but it's a pretty fair bet that we'll be seeing Galloca on the 25-man roster on opening day 2022.

Havana Minor League Hitter of the Year: LF Shirai Matsura
Havana Minor League Pitcher of the Year: Javier Arce

The clarification should be made that neither of these guys represent the best in our system. They just happen to be the guys we didn't acquire this year who sucked the least. Well done lads!

Shin Seiki Minor League Hitter of the Year: SP Arinori Mochizuki (AAA)
Shin Seiki Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SS Torazo Kodama (S-A)

Repeat winners for both here in SS.

Mochizuki is the top SP prospect in the Shin Seiki system. Originally draft by the now defunct Hyakujuu Shinkansen 1st over all in 2018, he was acquired in a big trade centered around SP Koki Watanabe in the 2018-2019 off season. He suffered a partially torn UCL during Spring Training in 2019 and missed the entire 2019 season. Since then, he has been relatively healthy and has come back strongly. He won the 2020 best pitcher award in Japanese AAA and was awarded the SS Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award. In 2021, against much better competition in the combined PEBA AAA, he showed steady improvement in WHIP, BB/9 and K/9. He seems poised to make the jump to PEBA soon. He has very little left to prove in AAA.

Unlike Mochizuki, Kodama is not a universally lauded blue chip prospect. In fact, most scouts view his as little more that a role player. For some reason, the Evas didn't and don't agree. They went out on a very thin limb by drafting him #4 overall in the 2019 draft. It was not a move that was well received in either the press or on the minds of the fans. But Kodama seems to have taken all of that personally. After getting his feet wet in 2019, he posted a very solid 124 OPS+ in 2020 and won the SS Minor League Hitter of the Year Award. But that was just him warming up - he really came in to his own in 2020. He erupted with a .310/.402/.951 line with 13 HR and 7 SB on only 368 PA. Beyond that, he dazzled with the glove posting a ZR of +19.1 in only 87 games. Can he keep this level of performance up? Will the scouts ever raise their opinion of him? No one knows. But he has done all one could ask to prove his critics wrong so far. The Evas have their fingers crossed. I would say that this award is a renewed vote of confidence for Kodama from the Evas, but Kodama obviously isn't in need of one.

* Matt, on a side note, neither of these guys are showing the 2020 awards in their history. Could you please fix that? *
Kevin V. - GM of the Shin Seiki Evas.

Yuma Minor League Hitter of the Year: RF Pedro Rodriguez (AAA)
Yuma Minor League Pitcher of the Year: RP Matt MacDonald (SA, A, AA)

Pedro tore up the Global Baseball Brotherhood (AAA) with a .293 average in 451 PA.

Matt pitched so well this season that we kept promoting him. He had a 2.08 ERA at Kivalina (SA) in the first five games, so he joined our A club in Salton Sea, where he had 11 saves and 1.57 ERA in 24 games, which earned him another bump up the ladder to AA Calgary, where he had 2 saves and a modest 4.38 ERA in 44 games. Quite a tour of the minors for Matt!

The former 1st rounder, Donald Mitchell has always known to carry a good bat. Although the 24-year-old has spent two full seasons at AAA, it is definitely more of circumstances than for a lack progress. Mitchell crushed 16 dingers along with 81 RBIs in 115 games with Florida's AAA affiliate.

The Chicago native has even been rumored to be a trading chip during this past season. However, word around the league is that Mitchell does not project to be an impactful player in the big leagues. Mitchell, of course, will be looking to prove that wrong. The former Big Daddy has already turned heads during his end of season call up. Despite lukewarm opinion around the league, Florida definitely sees a future for Mitchell. The Florida brass is excited to see him continue to work out this off-season and have a real shot at making the big ball club next season.

25-year-old James Jordan had a breakout season this year with a 16-3 record and 2.86 ERA. Despite his accomplishments, Florida scouts still have a hard time seeing Jordan crack Florida's talent-laden pitching staff. Perhaps Jordan's accolades says more about Florida's minor league pitching situation rather than Jordan's feats themselves O:-)

Nevertheless, Jordan will have to work on improving his command if he wants to cracks Florida's roster. Jordan is prone to giving up the long ball and has a tendency to drag an at bat to a full count.

  • Duluth Minor League Hitter of the Year: OF Dean Walden (A)
  • Duluth Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Paul Norris (AA/AAA)
Dean Walden hit .361/.390/.567 with 22 HR, 95 RBI, 72 R, and 8 SB for an overall 5.3 WAR in 119 games at A Rapid City this season, leading the team to the playoffs in 2021. He was named NAFTA Player of the Week 3 times and was a NAFTA all-star. The former fifth round pick from 2019 has shown advanced contact and power in his age 20 season. It isn't thought the power will continue against higher level pitching, but the contact tool should be a plus going forward. Walden will advance to AA or AAA next season and build on the 120 VORP he has amassed in the minors before being a legal drinker.

Paul Norris learned a sinker in the offseason and the top prospect in the Warriors organization took off in 2021. The 23-year old righty went 7-5 with a 2.84 ERA and 9 K/9 in 16 starts to begin the season in AA Mississauga. The team promoted him to AAA Madison and he performed just as well (6-4, 3.09 ERA, 87 K in 82 IP). Norris allowed only 9 homers all season, which is actually slightly higher than the 8 homers he allowed in 2020. This key piece from the Suarez trade last season will likely compete for a starting role in the big league rotation next year.

  • Canton Longshoremen Minor League Hitter of the Year: SS Gonzalo Gonzalez (AA/AAA)

In only his second professional season, the former 1-2 draft pick starred at the highest minor league level, leaving Canton Longshoremen fans wondering if GG's major league debut will precede his second anniversary of joining the organization. Gonzalez hit 326/461/404 for AA Youngstown before a late May promotion to AAA Allentown, where he hit 310/376/428 with 8 HR and 40 RBI. Combined between the two levels, the 23 year old Gonzalez stole 22 bases in 32 attempts. He also logged 116 games at SS, with positive defensive reviews. He was also versatile enough to start 15 games at the keystone, and log a handful of innings at the hot corner and in all three outfield spots. He topped it all off with a 333/459/633 postseason batting line as the Falcons bowed out after two playoff rounds.
  • Canton Longshoremen Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Alfonso Romero (AA/AAA)

This is the way it's supposed to be, right? An organization's top draft picks in two consecutive years end up as the hitter and pitcher of the year in the organization? Romero was drafted a year earlier and one pick later than his teammate Gonzalo, and Romero followed GG's promotion to AAA Allentown a few weeks later. All told, Romero made 27 regular season starts split between the two levels, going 13-4 with a 3.32 ERA, and a 51/179 BB/K ratio in 157 innings.

Calzones Minor League Pitcher of the Year: Jamie Heckbert - 16(!) years old starting pitcher had pretty good numbers in his rookie season in S A Taku Winds: 3.08 ERA, 3.18 FIP, 4.8/2.1/0.2 in 16 starts. Hopefully he will continue to develop :)

Calzones Minor League Hitter of the Year: Brandon Thompson - not many players to choose from really, we're still at the beginning of the road to greatness and crowded minors. His slash line of .269/.359/.461 is pretty decent, but i dont think he will become a superstar anytime soon (read it: never).

Adrián Fuentes

In 2020, third baseman Adrián Fuentes struggled a bit with the Japanese culture. It was his first season, and while his short season numbers eventually looked good in Osakasayama, he had difficulty with 94 A-level at bats with Cagliostro. Needless to say, team insiders were worried. This season, Fuentes proved they shouldn't have been. The 20-year-old spent time at three levels (A, AA-Ranma, and AAA Yamauchi), and bumped his numbers at every stop.

A- Cagliostro: 149 AB, .329/.398/.436
AA- Ranma: 190 AB, .332/.396/.474
AAA- Yamauchi: 65 AB, .385/.459/.477

Though he hit only 2 homers throughout the season, his 35 doubles showed good gap power. His defensive numbers say he's ready, also. This makes the off-season interesting for the Lupin front office, who struggled through a dose of Josh Shaffer and Dan Stewart at the hot corner in 2021. Will the club pull the trigger on a guy who will still be only 20 years old at the start of next season, or will they dally in the free agent market once more?

Time will tell.

Shihei Matsubara

In 2019, Shihei Matsubara was a first round draft pick and the world seemed a wonderous place. He stepped onto his first professional fields and dropped a 1.69 ERA on A-level hitters, registering 14 saves in 26 innings after being drafted. The world was, as it is said, his oyster. Then came the disaster that was 2020. AA hitters crushed him, and with his confidence destroyed, A-level hitters pummelled him. Coaches were worried, scouts were concerned. How could they have been so wrong?

But, like Fuentes above, Matsubara laced up the cleats and went to work, posting an outstanding 36 save season (with a 67 win team). He flashed serious moxie as he registered only 3 blown saves, and an additional 4 holds. But its his side numbers that have the team happiest. After giving up seven homers in 54 innings last season, Mats allowed only 1 in his 63 innings this year. His walk rate was down a half a pass a game, and his K/9 rate was back up over 12. The man can throw. Expect the team to start him in AA next season, with an quick ride to Yamauchi and AAA in the cards.

Honorable Mentions:

AAA: C Eitoku Hirano
AAA: 1B/3B Tadasuke Hagiwara (.278/.342/.537: 37 HR, 112 RBI)
AA: 2B Kiemon Ine (.337/.427/.465)

A: CL Shihei Matsubara (0-4, 36 saves, 2.43, 63 IP)
AAA: SP Motiki Ando (8-4, 2.64, 95.1 IP)
A: RP Ivan Ramirez (6-2, 2.74, 105 IP)
A: SP Sotatsu Hirano (5-6, 2.12, 97.2 IP)
A: RP Yorikane Nagai (9-3, 2.72, 112.1 IP)

In my last official duty as London GM I present to you
London minor league pitcher of the year : SP Scott 'Kiwi' Miner
Image
23 year old Scott was a first round pick (22nd overall) in 2019 and played all the way from A ball to Triple-A in 2021 with his highest ERA being 2.16. A 92/20 K/BB ratio at Double-A was impressive too in 129 IP and his last action of the season was to post a win in his first appearance at Triple-A level. going 7+ innings allowing six hits & one run
London minor league hitter of the year :RF Raúl Torror
Image
22 year old Raúl was a fourth rounder in 2020 and in his second full pro year he led Dover in homers (10) & drove in 43 runs (third on team). He showed the league a clean pair of heels increasing his stolen base total from 10 to 20 while still being caught only four times and also increased his doubles from three to 20

  • New Orleans Minor League Hitter of the Year: 3B Bob Swift (AAA)
  • New Orleans Minor League Pitcher of the Year: MR Loren Gary (AA)
Bob Swift
Image
23-year-old Bob Swift anchored the hot corner for New Orleans' AAA affiliate in Fayetteville. In 140 games, he batted .311, hit 50 home runs and drove in 131 RBI.

At the end of the year, with Fayetteville's season complete, Swift was given a taste of the major leagues, and hit his first career major-league home run on September 24th,
capping off an overall brilliant year for the third-baseman.
------
Loren Gary
Image
One of the hardest-working players in pro baseball, 26-year-old Loren Gary showed his grit and determination by being a jack-of-all-trades for New Orleans' AA affiliate in Delaware.
The left-hander was brought in for 41 games as a reliever, and intermittently was named starter a further 13 times.

Becoming a trusted and stable pitcher in a tough year, as his Delaware Diamonds finished well out of contention with a 51-89 record,
his statistics really stand out in the games which he started: a 4-1 record with a 2.54 ERA and 62 K's in 71 IP.
