Before choosing your players, please take a moment to review the qualifications listed at the bottom of this post. The histories of the players you select will be updated to note the honor you are bestowing upon them. You need do no more than list the hyperlinked names of the players, along with their current position and league level, but you are of course welcome and encouraged to provide an explanation for your selections - we want to get to know the future of your franchise!

Please use the following formatting when you make your announcement. Make sure to list players by their hyperlinked name, current full position (e.g. "SP" rather than just "P", "CF" rather than just "OF") and league level as listed in OOTP:

  • West Virginia Minor League Hitter of the Year: C Reid Wood (AA)
  • West Viriginia League Pitcher of the Year: P Eddy McBride (A)
I had to choose between Reid Wood and Ken Stone for hitter of the year. I chose Wood because he has an advantage on HR, RBI, and SLG%. But Stone put up great numbers in AA this year as well. He leads the team in batting average (.355) and OPS (1.030).

This made me think about the LRS Minor League Player of the Year awards that are coming up soon. I'm not sure I have anyone eligible...

•San Antonio Minor League Hitter of the Year: C Ramón Hernández(AA)
•San Antonio Minor League Pitcher of the Year: MR Mario Chávez (AA)

C Ramón Hernández is the Calzones Minor League Hitter of the Year for 2019. The 22 year old left handed hitting catcher batted .280 with 25 HR and 85 RBI in 110 games for AA Monterey. In 2018, he had batted .261 with 20 HR and 58 RBI in 101 games at AA Monterey, so he has proven to be a consistent power threat the last few seasons. His defense showed some signs of improvement this season, but he'll never be confused with Dan Glenn behind the plate.

Hernández epitomizes the Calzones farm system, where we will look under every rock for those players overlooked and unloved by other organizations. Guys like Jorge Mojica, whom we traded to Omaha in the Coronado deal, who is turning into a solid player at the PEBA level.

Hernández solid season at AA earned him a call up to serve as the Calzones third catcher in September, and we have even handed him a couple of starts to see how he handles PEBA pitching. Hernández path to a big league job is blocked in our system, but we are very open to the idea of moving him in a trade in order to get him an opportunity to play elsewhere.

MR Mario Chávez is the Calzones Minor League Pitcher of the Year, and he is winning the award for the second consecutive season. Much like Hernandez, Chávez epitomizes the Calzones minor league system, where you don't necessarily have to have the prettiest colors on your scouting reports to get an opportunity. The 21 year old southpaw was 3-3 with 17 saves in 53 appearances, sporting a 3.04 ERA and striking out 61 in 53.1 innings. The 3.04 ERA was actually the highest of Chávez's career in a full season, and his combined career ERA at the three lowest levels of the minors is 1.93. He has been exceptionally hard to hit at those levels, allowing just 136 hits in 196.1 innings. While striking out 217 over those same innings. The question mark has always been the control, as he has walked 83 over those innings. But he has been so difficult to hit, and keeps the ball in the park so well, that the walks usually don't hurt him. The other big question has been with his young age, whether he will be able to carry that success over to higher levels. He only made one appearance at AAA late this season, but struck out the side. He has been brought up to San Antonio and is being used in a situational lefty role down the stretch so we can get a little more look at him. He likely starts next season at Joplin, where we will continue grooming him for what will likely be a situational lefty role at the PEBA level in a season or two, should he continue to have success.

Aurora Announces 2019 Minor League Players of the Year
by Francis Ferry, NLN baseball beat writer
Minor League Hitter of the Year
Image
Miguel Angel Gálvez
Gálvez was the 10th overall selection in the 2016 draft - the second straight year Aurora took a catcher in the 1st round. For most of the time since, Gálvez has been the #2 catcher in the system (behind Rusty Butler). This year, Butler's stock dropped and Miguel's has risen - to the point where he was, quite possibly, a week from a promotion to The Front Range before a season ending ankle injury killed his chances of unseating a limp Scott Vinson. A 3-time collegiate All-Star, Gálvez was a CAAL All-Star in 2018, a season he split between Gatineau and Thornton. This year he was named to the RML squad. He hit 19 HR before his injury, matching his combined total form 2018 and his A Ball total in 2017 for SLRC. This year he hit .295 with 33-2B and 79 RBI to go with his HR total. It seems a fait accompli that Miguel will be on the Borealis roster come 2020. The spring competition should be fierce, and short Vinson finishing strong, through the post-season, they will start on even footing.

Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Image
Hyeon-Cheong Yong
Yong wins the award for the second season in a row, following up 2018's 12-8, 3.59 ERA, 187 K, 94 BB in 173 IP with a 14-6 record, 2.82 ERA, 209 K, 90 BB in 153 IP. He also posted a win in 2 GS for Aurora, though he struggled some at the Big League level as he walked 13 in 10.2 IP. Drafted 24th in the 2nd round of the 2013 draft (56th overall), Yong's growth continues, though his status in the Aurora system has become shakier. This time last year Aurora was looking at the loss of 'Quagmire', the uncertainty of Murdoch's abilities, and a very disturbing performance by Provost that nearly ended with his contract not vesting. Yong looked just as likely to fill a rotation spot on The Front Range as anyone. Fast-forward a year and, well, Provost's success is well documented, Murdoch has had a break-out year and with (2017 winner) Edgardo Rojas' decline, Junior Cook has taken the PEBA by storm. With only Anastasio Lopez not under contract beyond 2020, the 24-year old Korean may have to take his Aurora awards to another town.

As an aside to this years awards, I was thinking it might be fun to have a vote for PEBA Minor League Players of the Year - maybe as part of the PEBA end of season awards, based on these selections. Any thoughts?

  • Canton Longshoremen Minor League Hitter of the Year: LF Gabriel Martínez (AAA - Allentown Falcons / AA - Youngstown Thunder)

That didn't take long. It took less than one whole professional season for the Longshoremen's 2018 first round pick to make it to the organization's highest minor league affiliate. The #7 overall selection started the season in AA Youngstown, where he raked to the tune of 315/439/467 with 4 HR in 50 games and 154 ABs. A rash of injuries at AAA Allentown was the impetus for Martinez being shuttled up the organizational chain for what was supposed to be a two week cup of coffee at the end of May. He never was sent back down, hitting 322/395/487 with 9 HR in 84 games and 339 AB. The lefty punished righthanders (337/470/488 in AA and 337/415/543 in AAA) but was far from helpless against southpaws (281/364/421 and 281/343/344). His defense was above-average in left field, too, although he is slightly less comfortable in right field. With Canton expected to non-tender starting LF Pat Deatherage in the offseason, a strong spring could see Martinez in the Opening Day lineup in Canton.
  • Canton Longshoremen Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Jim Hayden (AA - Youngstown Thunder)

A bit of a prodigal son, Jim Hayden's second half surge was a transformative event for the Longshoremen player development system. Selected #5 overall in the year before Martinez was selected #7, Hayden is rumored to have been a war room mistake. Many in the know believed that the Longshoremen were planing to pick Bob Whittaker or Simon Jones, but called Hayden's name by accident. Despite perennially ranking high in the prestigious PEBA Top 100 Prospects list, (#34 and #53 in his first two full seasons as a professional), Hayden's minor league performance has always disappointed. Indeed, as late as May 28, mention of Hayden's name was reportedly verboten in the presence of the organization's top brass. And why not? At that point, Hayden had a 6.38 ERA in 10 starts in his second season at AA Youngstown, following up a 4-8, 5.83 ERA 2018 season. What happened next? Hayden reeled off 17 starts in which he went 9-4 with a 2.38 ERA. He ended the season with a 13-6 record and a 3.75 ERA, likely earning a promotion to AAA Allentown in 2020, a rotation that could feature three former first round picks who are Top 100 prospects.

Mendoza clubbed "A" ball with 11 HRs in just 25 games, good enough for a .730 slugging percentage. The 21 year old shortstop was quickly promoted to "AA" ball and he continued to hit well, going for a .872 OPS and a .250 ISO. If he doesn't start next season off at "AAA" he'll be on the fast-track to get there. He's got the glove to stick at shortstop, but the question is if he'll develop a better eye at the plate as his walk rate was not impressive.

Hale has been stellar in his ML league debut this season, following the trades of Armando Gallegos and Javier Saenz, but it was his work down in AAA that paved the way for his promotion. At AAA Sioux Falls he started 20 games going 9-7 with a 3.62 ERA. His FIP was 3.39 and his WHIP was an strong 1.20. He's a command and control pitcher that won't miss too many bats, but he knows how to keep the ball in the park and avoids giving away the free pass. He's 25 years old and is looking like a good bet to make the starting rotation in Fargo for next season.

  • Crystal Lake Minor League Hitter of the Year: 1B Roberto Pantoja Single A El Cajon
Pantoja, a 4th round pick in the 2016 PEBA selection meeting spent the entire 2019 season at Single A EL Cajon and showed promise as a potential slugging first baseman. After a slow start to his professional career, Pantoja has ratcheted up his game the last two years and posted an impressive .301/.401/.580 line on the season in 491 AB's with 37 HR's. The 6'3" 205 lb Pantoja is a 21 year old native of Corona, CA, and figures to spend the 2020 season honing his game at AA Brampton.
  • Crystal Lake Minor League Pitcher of the Year: SP Javier Jimenez AAA Evansville
Jimenez is threatening to retire the Crystal Lake Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award after capturing it for a third consecutive season in 2019. Jimenez posted another strong performance this year for the Gnats AAA affiliate throwing 152 2/3 innings and compiling a 3.30 ERA to go along with 165 K's. The 23 year old righty, a first round selection and 13th overall pick in the 2015 PEBA draft, looks destined for the big club next season with very little left to prove in his minor league career.
