Trade between CL and SA

#1 Post by Apollos »

SA receives:

1B Ruben Memde
LF Benton Hawkins (AAA)

CL receives:

MR Oliver Gonzalez

Thanks to Matt for the easy negotiations on this! I think this was a mutually beneficial deal here as Hawkins was blocked in our system and I really needed another starter to pull Chris White out of our rotation once and for all. I'm hopinh Hawkins adjusts to the big leagues quickly and pairs with Memde (a favorite of mine who was an int'l FA find before they were formalized) to give SA a potent LH duo here.

Confirmed by San Antonio.

Thanks also to Brian for the easy negotiations. I also think the deal helps both teams. On our end, we have owned left handed pitching this year, but struggled too often against right handed pitching. We're 8th in the IL in runs scored, yet 11th in batting avg. Hawkins gives us a high average type hitter with some power who we can put into the lineup, likely in the 6 hole, who will hopefully allow us to extend some innings. He won't walk much, but neither did Joe Carter, so we'll see how that plays out. We're 5th in the league in walks so the rest of the lineup has decent discipline. We needed someone who can swing the bat. We do know one thing, Mr. Hawkins should be prepared to visit winter ball and work on that outfield range. The young Memde is another left handed bat who should help the lineup. He can play solid defense at 1b, and looks to be developing into a hitter who should fit into the middle of the lineup in the near future. He may need to sit against the occasional left handed pitcher, but in about 3 years he could be drawing favorable comparisons to Pexego. We give up Gonzalez, but with the pitching we have coming off the DL next year, we think this move sets us up nicely for the future.

EDIT: Please place both Memde and Hawkins on the active roster. In the rhp+dh lineup, please place Hawkins as the starter in left field, batting 4th, and Memde at 1b, batting 7th. Please place both players in those respective slots in the 7 day lineups on 7/21, 7/23/, 7/25/ and 7/26. In the lhp+dh lineup, please place Memde as utility 1 at 1b, and Hawkins as utility 1 at LF.
