Help me make my own logo's

Anyone want to recommend a program to use to work on these? I might be able to get Photoshop, but is there an easier one to use? I am also going to need some training or advice as this will be my first foray into the world of design.

I have only dabbled in GIMP, but it's free, and from what I can tell, has an easy-to-use and powerful interface.

I haven't used GIMP myself, but I know a number of logo makers at the OOTP forums use it. And as Tyler said, it's free, so you can't beat the price.
