As for the Forida situation mentioned above, former commisioner Ueberoth recommended one team in Florida, located centrally (Orlando). His committee studied the issue in depth. Baseball, in all it's wisdom, didn't listen. However, part of that was having to placate a couple of Florida markets that were either threatening to sue or in the process of suing because they had been jerked around by teams like the White Sox and Giants who used them as pawns to get new stadiums.

Having lived in Jacksonville for 6 years as a child, I know there is a lot of baseball love down in Florida. I happen to believe baseball would have had a different history in Florida had Ueberoth's recomendation been followed. Think about Orlando's location. Very short drives for people from Jacksonville, Tampa, Daytona, etc. Not that far a drive even from the south florida area. And people from the panhandle, Pensacola, Tallahassee, etc, would have a more reasonable drive.
