Codgers move Nelson

#1 Post by Codgers »

The Palm Spring Codgers and Scottish Claymores agreed to a deal that sent three players and a draft pick to the Codgers for second basement Eric Nelson.

In return the Codgers received infielders Kazuma Nii and Moos Ippel along with rising prospect Raul Chavez. The Codgers also received the Claymores first round pick in this years amateur draft.

When asked about dealing Nelson away from a team bereft of talent General Manager Rob Sullivan said, “Listen, we won 49 games last year so you have to expect changes. We have to be aggressive in acquiring talent even if it means moving good players. Nelson is a great player but he is now arbitration eligible and going to start commanding big money over the next couple of years. Both Nii and Ippel are two years away from arbitration, neither will produce offensively like Nelson but we get two years to decide if they are long term pieces for the Codgers. We view Chavez as a potential impact player who will mature in the same window as the rest of our top offensive prospects, he could be a piece to the core we are trying to build.”

When asked about the logic of trading away Nelson while spending big on second basemen Manuel Jimenez Sullivan responded, “To be honest, while we hope Jimenez works out as a long term piece his signing was a bit of a PEBA rookie mistake. I saw a player who averaged a 6.7 WAR over the last three seasons asking for well under league average for that productivity and we made an aggressive offer to land him. It wasn’t until after we signed him that I realized those numbers were put up in the World Independent League. We like the player and we hope it works out.”
