SS 2037 Minor league hitter of the Year- 3B Doug Knox
Knox officially arrived in 2037. He started the season as a looming threat to Evas 1B Scotty Weeks. Weeks responded to the pressure with a career year (.301\.342\.938, 32HR, 117RBI). Knox answered in kind. He dominated AAA (.322\.385\.977 and 3.4 WAR in 296 PA). That force the hand of the Eva front office. He got the call in June, and never looked back. He was nothing short of excellent (.331\.370\.968 and 2.2 WAR in 270 PA). That earned him a handful of ROTY votes, even if he didn't stand a shot of winning it due to when he was called up. He will start 2038 as the Evas' starting 1B at only 22 years old. The sky is the limit for him offensively. He might be capped out defensively as a 1B, but he is solid there. He can play 3rd in a pinch, but his glove is a liability there, so he will likely only see action there a handful of times a year at the PEBA level.

SS 2037 Minor League Pitcher of the Year RP Mike O'Halloran (A)
O'Halloran started the year in A ball in the rotation. He started 16 games, with his advance metrics (2.15 FIP and 3.3 WAR in 83 IP) outpacing his standard stats (3.90 ERA, 4-7 record). His scouting assessment and advanced metrics earned him a promotion. He skipped the pandemonium in AA Seoul and went straight to AAA Kyoto. The SS remained high on MOH's potential, but saw his best use as a high volume reliever, rather than a SP. He didn't seem to quite have the stamina that would be needed, averaging just over 5IP per start. As a reliever, he blossomed in AAA, posting a solid 2.35 ERA in 12 appearances. At only 22 years old, he is young for AAA, and likely needs some more seasoning. But he should have a shot at debuting in the majors in 2038 if he continues to progress.

Follow Up on 2031's winners:
  • C\1B Manny Lara seems to have taken multiple steps back, posting a terrible -1.1 WAR in 2037 in ARL. He has one more guaranteed contract year in 2038. Unless he steps things up in a big way, it could be his last chance in the bigs.
  • SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi was dealt to KEN at the deadline for an armada of young talent and picks. It was not an easy decision to move him. Players with his talent do not come around often and SS was loathe to move a young starter like him. But ultimately, the Evas came to the conclusion that he was just not going to be able to reach his considerable potential in SS and that all parties would be better off with him getting a chance to start over elsewhere. So far, that seems correct. Yi performed much better after the trade (130 ERA+ in 11 GS in KEN vs. 75 ERA+ in 20 GS in SS). Hopefully he continues to shine in 2039.
Follow Up on 2032's winners:
  • LF Cris Krebs was solid again in 2037, but no star. He wasn't even especially great vs. LHP As he advances in arbitration, and his salary increases, it is more and more likely that he is dealt to a team that can play him every day. He has the talent to be a consistent starter. But he is unlikely to get that chance in SS with Ortega and Takahashi firmly entrenched in the OF corners vs RHP.
  • SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi - See above.
Follow Up on 2033's winners:
  • 1B/3B Scotty "The Grinch" Weeks bought himself a lot of runway in 2037. His career year (.301\.342\.938, 32HR, 117RBI, 4.9 WAR) left his critics with little to say. He seems likely to place 2nd in the MVP race. Hard to argue against that. His defensive flexibility will help him too. He is serviceable at 3B, if not amazing. But good enough if he is hitting, at least against RHP. Weeks will certainly feature prominently on the 2038 Evas and likely beyond.
  • SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi - See above.
Follow Up on 2034's and 2035's winners:
  • DH António Gómez - Gomez performed well in ARL vs. RHP when he got opportunities (.318\.438\.907), but he only got 80 PA's vs. RHP all season. Hopefully he get more regular playing time in 2038. Scouts still think he has talent.
  • SP Dong-hak "Entrop" Yi - See above.
Follow Up on 2036's winners:
Knox and O'Halloran repeated as winners in 2037.

Amsterdam Minor League Hitter of the Year:
CF Jorge 'Bucky' Rosas (AA/ML)

Rosas got a late season call up after a great full season at AA Den Bosch. He hit .310 with a .394 OBP in 128 games. On the base paths, he was 70-11 in stolen bases. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a lick of power despite hitting 3 home runs. Anything in the gap and his speed will easily get him extra bases, but the strength isn't there yet to get him there often. He won't strike out too much, and looks like he's about as ready as he'll ever be. Don't be surprised to see him make the team as a backup outfielder. He can play all three outfield positions, and coming off the bench should be a decent contact hitter who can also pinch run.

Amsterdam Minor League Pitcher of the Year:
SP Armando Sánchez (AAA/ML)

Sánchez came over from the Ghosts in the Carmelo Lamberti trade and continues to impress as he moves up the ladder. For Eindhoven, he went 12-10 with a 3.23 ERA, which is certainly fine but not particularly noteworthy. More interesting were his 196 K's in 192.1 innings, 3 complete games, and a home run rate that stayed low. Like Rosas, he got a late season call up, and he made 3 starts for the Lions, going 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA and a strikeout per inning. He's just 22, and most needs to work on avoiding the longball, but if he can keep up this trend he'll be a valuable member of the rotation sooner than later.

Sanchez may be in rare company, earning minor league player of the year for multiple organizations. He's a great fit in Amsterdam. Glad he's continuing to excel!

San Juan Coqui Minor League Hitter of the Year:

SS Gerald Contaldo (AA/A)

It is a long way from the Lombardy region of Italy to San Juan, PR, but the distance for second year pro Gerald Contaldo got a little shorter in 2037. In an otherwise sleepy and disappointing farm system, Contaldo was a jolt of espresso, hitting 275/326/497 with 9 HRs and 22 RBI in 171 at bats in Hi-A Kingston to start the season. That 45-game audition earned Contaldo a promotion to AA Santurce, where at 20 years old he was one of the youngest hitters in the league. The step up slowed Contaldo only slightly. He played 75 games for Santurce, hitting 257/306/467 with 15 HR. A 4.2 WAR season for a 20 year old shortstop who can stick at the position defensively has Contaldo rocketing up the Coqui prospect list. The 21 year old will start the 208 season in AAA Santo Domingo, and with the Coqui's woes at the keystone, a hot start could see him called up to San Juan.

San Juan Coqui Minor League Pitcher of the Year:

SP Alberto Salazar (SS-A)

Salvadoran scouting discover Alberto Salazar's introduction to professional baseball was a successful one. The 21 year old left the Coqui international complex for the far flung Homer Wallbangers, the Coqui's SS-A affiliate in the small Alaskan salmon fishing town. The sidearm power pitcher turned in 13 quality starts in 17 attempts, going 8-7 with a 2.84 ERA in 117+ innings pitched. The workhorse averaged nearly 7 innings per start and struck out nearly a batter per inning. Lefties (.194) and righties (.196) both hit below the Mendoza iine against Salazar. At a lanky 6'6", 200 pounds, Salazar could move quickly through the Coqui system.

Fargo Minor League Hitter of the Year:
CF Rowan Guao (AAA/ML)

Seen initially (more on this later) as the centerpiece to the Owen Barse blockbuster trade last offseason, Guao, got off to a hot start at AAA Sioux Falls this past season with 15 HRs during the first two months of April and May. Before a late season call up to the majors and an unfortunate torn meniscus, which ended his season in late August, Guao finished up his AAA season with a .253/.340/.512 slash line good for a 151 wRC+ and along with a 7.6 Zone Rating in CF, a cumulative WAR of 5.8. He's nearing full recovery (fingers crossed) from his torn meniscus and will hope to put the injury past him and see how well he can do with a full season in the bigs.

Fargo Minor League Pitcher of the Year:
SP David Garcia (A/AA)

Although Rowan Guao was considered the centerpiece by Fargo fans and most in the local media of the Barse trade, it is now turning out that Garcia may be the player with most star power. One would not need to look much farther than the current national prospect rankings to find Garcia has skyrocketed up to #5 on the top 100 list. Garcia split the season starting out at A ball Bismark for 11 starts and then promoted up to AA ball Toronto, for 15 starts. Combined, he put up 6.3 WAR. In AA, his K/9 actually improved from the first half of the season in A ball, and he finished with a 12.2 rate, while walking a manageable 2.2 hitters per nine innings and giving up .4 homeruns per nine innings. He will look to make the jump to AAA next season and should be in consideration for a spot on the big league roster by mid season or late season depending on how he handles the transition.

Havana Minor League Hitter of the Year:

Zerillo had a breakout 2037 season after quickly traversing up through the A and AA squads. A solid glove at the corner, whose hitting skills continue to develop. He loves to golf.

Maruyama throws four quality pitches and features an outstanding changeup paired with an above average fastball. Everyone raves about his big time stuff. He has quickly worked his way through the system. He'll be pitching in the bigs for 2038.
