New Kid In Town

-September 11th, 2034-
By Ken Peterson, Hartford Harpoons beat writer for the Hartford Herald

As the 2034 PEBA regular season is coming to a close and the playoff picture is starting to take form, Harpoon fans can’t help but try and put this season behind them and focus on the future. To say the season has been anything but a disappointment would be a lie. As of today Hartford is 58-87(.400) and sitting in last place in the Seaboard division. This will now be there second straight season ending with over 90 losses, finishing last season 69-93(.426). It’s not hard to see that something needs to change, and needs to change fast. Is Dusty King the change Hartford needs?

If you are wondering exactly who Dusty King is, you’re not alone. It was announced earlier last week that King would be stepping into the recently vacated General Manager position. When asked about bringing in King to head up this rebuild Harpoon Owner Dennis Hall said “After sitting down with a number of other candidates and hearing all of the different approaches to rebuilding this franchise, Dusty stood out amongst the rest as the clear choice.”

As confident as Hall seems in King’s skills to man a major rebuild of the Harpoons, little is known about King or his plan for the future. To add more to this mystery man King has yet to agree to speak to anyone in the media including us here at the Herald. Hall had a short and simple answer to why his new GM is staying quiet, “He is busy…”

Hopefully Dusty will break his silence soon as the entire fan base is praying for better days to come, but until then we can only speculate on some of the decisions the front office is dealing with heading into the offseason. It is unclear if there are any players on this roster that can be considered safe. While there is some young talent that could contribute to winning seasons in Hartford it might be years before the organization can compete again. Will King be able to build around these young players? Maybe King will look to improve more quickly with big free agent pickups. Hartford has the money to make a big splash, but is there a player that is worth the money and can turn this team around now? Another option will be to put most if not all efforts into that draft. Trading away players for draft picks can be risky, but is an option to build and nurture talent organically.

No matter what or how King decides to rebuild this team he is going to have his work cut out for him. King is expected to have a press conference closer to the end of the season where he will address some of these matter in more detail, but until then Harpoon fans I just have three words for you, KEEP THE FAITH.
