Both teams had their chances, but the Charleston Statesmen eventually prevailed.

The Charleston Statesmen had to overcome a fine performance from San Antonio pitcher Anthony Lee to grab a 3-2 win at Elysian Fields. Lee allowed 2 runs over 6.2 innings. The Calzones of Laredo are now 9-17.

Tied up with the Calzones of Laredo in the top of the tenth inning, the Statesmen got a boost from second baseman Tung Thum. With the bases empty, Thum saw a 1-0 forkball from Damien Neighbour and hit a solo home run to break the stalemate and put Charleston on top, 3-2.

"It was a test of wills," said Duncan Walker, the Charleston skipper. "I'm glad we came out of it with a win."

Juan Garanzuay

The days of the 75 pitch count for Garanzuay have long since gone, earlier in the season he'd have lasted 6 innings but the increase of muscle and stamina during the off season means a 100 pitch count is the norm for Garanzuay.

There weren't to many times that Garanzuay wasted pitches, in the 1st he faced a 3 up 3 down throwing only 13 pitches. In the 2nd he was more miserly with only 6 pitches in another 3 up 3 down, the 3rd followed suit with another 3 up 3 down with 14 pitches thrown the most he'd thrown during an inning.

He started a bit wobbly in the 4th when Tung Thum got on base with a double, he then had a toe to toe 13 pitch fight with Anthony Gamble that ended up in a 4-3 groundout. 2 more outs ended the inning with the Calzones 2-0 up.

A Tu-an Qin double was the only mark against Garanzuay in the 5th, it was a 3 up 3 down in the 6th as was the 7th and 8th in what ended up being a comfortable 8 innings game for Garanzuay.

If not for a couple of doubles and that face of with Gamble it may well of been a 9 innings game for Garanzuay.
