Juan 'The Flame-Thrower' Guerrero

West Virginia Alleghenies starter Juan Guerrero was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the San Antonio Calzones of Laredo, 10-1. Guerrero picked up the win for West Virginia, going 6 innings. He gave up 1 run on 1 hits. He now sports a record of 1-3. West Virginia is now 16-6.

Francisco Alejándrez had a key at-bat for West Virginia. In the top of the fifth, with the bases loaded, the 26-year-old catcher hit a grand slam home run.

"We had a nice day," said West Virginia skipper Salvador González.

"Raúl García leading of for West Virginia with the Calzones star pitcher Dean McNeil on the mound, McNeil 2-0 for the season.

García takes a curveball, McNeil not happy with the umpires decision but the replay showing it just missed the corner of the zone.

McNeil fires another curveball but that didn't miss the corner and even as García swinging at fresh air for the strike.

1-1 count, McNeil just flexing his right hand before Fujihara fires a ball to him, remember McNeil had an extra days rest due to a sore elbow. The Calzones manager wanted to put McNeil on the IL but McNeil pushed for the start against West Virginia, McNeil throws a sinker that García makes contact with but pops it up to shallow left for the out.

There's concern though on the mound and on the Calzones bench, McNeil looks in some kind of discomfort. Team Trainer Juan Santos as made his way to the mound, he's signalling to the bench that McNeil 's day is over".

Zhu-lan Fong would take over from McNeil and a conveyor belt of 5 more pitchers would follow and despite them keeping West Virginia to 3 runs, it wasn't enough as West Virginia ran out 3-2 winners.

If that wasn't bad enough it would later transpire that McNeil would be lost for the season with a UCL tear.

John Lightbody

The West Virginia Alleghenies beat the San Antonio Calzones of Laredo by a score of 9-5. West Virginia first baseman John Lightbody deserved the lion's share of the credit. Lightbody went 3-5 with a double and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3 for the Alleghenies. José Tojeira earned the win to go to 6-0. He allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. West Virginia, with the win, is 19-6.

With West Virginia leading 1-0 in the top of the second, Lightbody hit a sinker from Dan Stockstill for a bases-clearing double. It was his 3rd double of the season and put the Alleghenies ahead, 4-0.

"When this team comes together and plays the way we can, we can compete with anyone," said Lightbody. "I think we're going to keep proving that."
