Scotland brought its bats to this one, banging out 15 hits en route to a 6-5 win over the Trendsetters in New Orleans. New Orleans SP Hisashi Kokan pitched well, allowing 1 run, 6 hits, 2 walks and 8 Ks (PQS: 3). But the Claymores jumped on RP Gabriel Gutiérrez for 6 hits and 4 runs in 0.2 innings in the top of the 7th … New CF Tomás Flores got off to a strong start with his new team, going 3-5 with a run scored … 1B Orlando Barrón also had a nice game, going 3-5 with 3 singles, a walk and an RBI … Player of the Game: Hisashi Kokan … Cliché of the Game: "If you want to be considered a good team, these are the kind of games you have to win," said Scottish manager Hayato Sasaki. Of course, it’s not at all clear yet that Scotland particularly wants to be known as a good team. For now, just a team will apparently do …

Oniji Yokoyama made an inauspicious debut for Scotland, losing his first start of the season 7-2 to New Orleans. Yokoyama went 5.0 innings, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned runs, 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. His PQS score: 2 … RP Manuel Sánchez had a rough outing, allowing a triple, a double and a walk as 3 runs scored in the top of the 7th. Only 1 of the runs was earned, though, as a result of a fielding error by 3B Eric Jacobs … RF Will Nelson suffered a partially torn labrum making a throw from the outfield and will on the injured list for an estimated 6 weeks … Player of the Game: Enrique Ríos, New Orleans DH, who went 2-2 with a double, 2 walks, and 2 runs scored … Cliché of the Game: New Orleans LF Germán Jáquez attributed the win to "a well-rounded effort by the whole team."

The Claymores dropped the rubber game of the series 6-5, as the Trendsetters got to SP Todd Gustafson for 6 hits and 5 runs in 5.1 IP. His PQS: 1 … RP Sadakuno Nakagawa had a rare ineffective outing, too, blowing a save when he allowed a 2-run, bases-loaded single to New Orleans DH Ray Kimball in the 6th inning … There were some bright spots, though. CF Tomás Flores had another nice game, going 2-4 with a double, a triple, a run scored and 3 RBIs … Another new acquisition, DH Tony Figueroa went 3-5 … Player of the Game: New Orleans CF Roberto García, who went 2-4 with a homer, 2 runs scored, and 4 RBIs … Cliché of the Game: "If we keep winning the close games," García said, "we'll be in good shape at the end." We’re pretty sure theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking said this first, though.

The Skinny: This series seems like an unfortunate harbinger for series to come: lots of offense by the Claymores that goes to waste at the hands of lousy starting pitching. Let’s hope that Yokoyama can put his first rather shaky outing behind him and bring a little stability to the rotation. Otherwise … whoa.

I'm really enjoying the cliche of the game!

I had overlooked the Tony Figueroa signing. How old is he? He's so old that he played for the Tempe Knights... for 7 seasons!

He's 37 years young ... still a pretty good on-base guy: still hits and draws walks. Can't play the field, really, but that's not why I picked him up ...
