The Claymores broke out their bats for this one, downing Charleston 9-5 in a slugfest at the Castle … Scottish SP Lawrence Newman was largely ineffective, getting hammered for 10 hits and 4 runs in 5 innings. His PQS: 1 … Scotland’s offense came through in a big way, though, led by CF Teruo Nagai, who went 3-4 with a double and 2 singles. He scored twice and knocked in 3 runs … One sour note: slugger Vincent Powell strained his oblique on a defensive play in the 6th inning and will be sidelined for a week … Player of the Game: Teruo Nagai … Cliché of the Game: We’ll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow,” said Scottish 1B Orlando Barrón.

Scotland’s offense carried the day again as the Claymores rallied late to down the Statesmen 10-5 in Edinburgh … 3B Eric Jacobs and C Yasunari Fujihara each homered, and LF Jorge Flores hit a 2-run double to key a 6-run outburst in the 8th that put the Scottish over the top … Player of the Game: Eric Jacobs … Cliché of the Game: “We maximized our offense today,” said Scottish skipper Hayato Sasaki. “That makes everyone’s life easier.” Ain’t it the truth.

The bats cooled and, predictably, Scotland fell as a result, losting 5-2 to Charleston. Statesmen SP Kokei Yamashita pitched a solid game, going 5.2 innings and allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. His PQS: 2 … Charleston RF António Valdéz had a big day, going 2-3 with a homer and a walk. He scored 2 and knocked in 2 … Scotland’s biggest offensive producer was C Yasunari Fujihara, who went 2-3 with a walk and 2 RBIs … Player of the Game: António Valdéz … Cliché of the Game: “Winning the game is always the first objective,” said Valdéz. Sun Tzu could not have said it better.

The Skinny: Thank goodness for offense … Scotland allowed 5 runs in each game, which is not a sustainable recipe for the success. Losing Powell for a week won’t help matters much, either. The Claymores will be tested on the road next week against New Orleans and Charleston – Scottish fans better hope the starting corps settles down a bit!
