2029 Draft Review

#1 Post by Alleghenies »

The Alleghenies at one point had over 18 picks, but they ended up with only 3 by draft day, a 1st,2nd and 15th. The team felt super lucky with Bruce Schneider falling to them in the 1st round. With the 2nd round pick Pedro Gonzales looked to be a good risk to take even though there were a few pitchers the team had ranked right near him. With the 15th round pick they chose a guy they knew they could not sign and with the limited roster spaces, the team didn't mind.

So let's look at what the 2 players did for the organization.

Bruce Schneider:
Bruce started his career in Single-A and it only lasted 4 games. He hit .308, but got on at a pace of .471, with those numbers and AA lacking a LF, the team called him up to Maine. While he did not disappoint in AA, he probably should have stayed in A for a few more weeks. Schneider's line in AA was .267/.333/.332. Once he was called up the team didn't want to upset him while sending him down. The good thing is Schneider has promised to work in the off-season and was very unhappy with his performance. The team still views him as a starter in WV within the next 3 years.

Pedro Gonzales:
When selected, Pedro was only 18 years old and it has been well documented that most 18 year old hitters in SA get over-matched and that is the case with Pedro. While he only hit .196/.233/.291, he still did all the things right that he needed to. He is smart and you can see when he makes mistakes, he makes sure to learn from them. He is still playing as the Kauai Monsters are still in the playoffs. Next season it is rumored that he will be playing in Aruba which hopefully he can develop some confidence with some big numbers..

While organizations can't be maintained with only 2 picks a year, the Alleghenies are said to be looking for upwards of 25 picks in next draft to rebuild the minor league system and revamp their minor leagues. For the time being the Alleghenies have 2 young pieces that while on paper might not have been super impressive, the team still has high hopes for the both.
