Those who've been round a while may recall the Lupin Cliff Hangers club in the LRS. This seemed noteworthy and relevant:

I saw the news and was greatly saddened by it. Monkey Punch was an icon in the Japanese animation industry. He will be missed.

I was sad to hear about this as well, Lupin was timeless and is still popular today.
I'd say he's earned a statue or some other memorial at the Castle of Cagliostro in Toyama.
