The Badgers have given up the ghost. We are abysmal right now. We've had a few injuries in the rotation, but really the entire squad is just playing poorly and every bounce in July has gone against us. That's resulted in a 4-19, .174 record this month. I don't think my AA team could do any worse.

Disappointing week for Duluth, but they kept it close against Aurora considering their top two sluggers and closer were recently salary dumped. Well on the road to financial stability as we brace for the big budget cuts. Hate to see Esquivel go, but he'll do well in Aurora and his weird 2030 contract jump was a looming issue. Back to the drawing board on platooning strategy as we brace for another week.

The contract was actually not a bad deal, from our perspective - he's cheap next season - which is HUGE, and the $20M in 2030 will be market rate for the quality pitcher he has been. Historically he's held firm with the scouts opinions, then in 2031, when he's 35 (Provost is 35... 'Tugboat' is 35...) his contract jumps, but it's the glorious Player opt/Team opt that bails you out if need be!

We've some promising arms in the low minors (Batista, after 3 A starts that were stronger than his 3 Short A starts, is getting the trip to Canada for his next start), we need short-term help, and Esquivel helps now, and he'll help there in the next couple of seasons - because we need starting pitching in the near term.

But in the now - another hard throwing groundball pitcher to hopefully keep those balls in the park...

And so... Adios Carlos 'I never met a trainers table I didn't like' Rivera and Au revoir Mssr. Provost - the train is arollin' without you... with that, $50M is freed up for next season - good thing, we've added a few pricer toys in the last few weeks...

Rafael Vega is still hitting just .188 for the season but suddenly has hit in 5 straight at .500 with 5 RBI and 2 HR and has worked his way back into a platoon. Hoping he's figuring out ML pitching after half a season.

So far so good in Aurora on the trade front:

Mike Monroe - 15.2 IP, 1.15 ERA, 13 K, 2 BB
Arturo Velasquez - 29 IP (5 appearance, 4 GS), 2.48, 25 K, 10 BB
Derrick Dwyer - 14-48 (.292/.404/.396), 2-2B, HR

The Hunt for Purple & Black October is on...

Pleased to have added two possibilities for the role of Hartford starting SS next season. They’ll now have the rest of the Triple-A season to show me what they can do. They might even get a September callup if they really shine but as they’re both on minor league deals they might have to wait for non-roster invites next spring

I decided it was time to promote Masakazu 'Badger' Nishimura. In 6 relief appearances he has allowed 2 earned runs. I desperately need this 24 year old to become a great pitcher. However, I have been frustrated with his inability to improve a third pitch (change-up). My hope is that promoting him to better competition will help the cause.

He looks very close to ready to me. I'd throw him in the rotation and let him take his lumps.

I'd agree with Kevin. He isn't going to improve the third pitch in a bullpen role since he doesn't need it. Just have to let him figure it out through some rough starts

Has he done Winter Ball, Scott? He may get more out of having him learn another pitch in WB then hoping the 3rd one gets beyond a 1...

Yes. I sent him a while back to improve his command. I should have tried to improve the change up.

That Changeup is always one of the more difficult ones to develop. If you can get it to half of it’s potential, I usually call that a success. That’s why I tend to value draftees who have already developed the changeup somewhat.

Below is a chart produced by former PEBA GM Ron Collins for the BBA league. Across the top is the current ratings of all the pitchers who can throw change-ups in the BBA majors and the vertical line shows the Potential as shown in their profile. The data shows the number of pitchers that reached full potential or if they didn't, what rating the pitch reached., Probably not that relevant directly to PEBA but it gives an indication of the % of change-ups that develop
