Improving the 2027 Draft Experience

#1 Post by Morris Ragland »

  • The Problem of Two Lists
This has come up in recent drafts, though was particularly bad this year. The college league draft eligibility age, in both college leagues, was set at 22 rather than 21.
This meant that Ootp left out a sizeable portion of otherwise eligible college players. Fixing draft eligibility in Ootp, and importing the Ootp list directly into StatsLab, rather than having StatsLab generate a draft pool independently, should fix this problem. This will mean that if the player appears in-game, they will be in the official draft pool, and vice versa.
  • Late Draft Pool Reveal
GMs weren't given enough time to put together draft lists in StatsLab. Work to move the draft pool from Ootp to StatsLab should begin with the sim that the pool is revealed, 75 game days prior to the draft. This should give GMs enough time to develop their draft lists and prepare for the draft.
  • Fouled Logs and Draftee Negotiations
The process of transferring draft results into the game was not smooth and flawless. The simplest solution here, I believe, will be to manually enter picks in Ootp that are made in StatsLab, dodging the transfer step. This means syncing the draft order in both prior to the draft. I hope these steps fix those post-draft problems we've seen this year.
  • Auto Draft Should not be a Punishment
From what I've seen, the quality of picks made by auto draft is pretty poor. GMs not able to put together a list, and clubs with no GM, don't deserve to be saddled with more or less random drafts. Next year we'll have a draft list for the first three rounds, put together using OSA scouting, which should be an improvement over auto draft in the early rounds. This list will take the place of auto draft for the first day of the first-year draft.

I'd be willing to help do it manually while draft was going (if I can attend the next draft date, as I can't predict 6 months from now) or have someone on the committee do it :-).

These are good improvements. Are we just rolling what we have for 2026 or can we do some kind of manual fix if teams don’t want Round 1-3 autopicks that were also autosigned without negotiations?

That would blunt the pain a lot for me. The bears would cut their Rounda 1-3 picks who were automatically signed.

Thanks, Morris!

I'd also be willing to do some of the scut work since I spend so much time planning around the draft anyway!

I think these are great ideas! I especially like starting everything when the draft pool is revealed....the earlier the start, the more time there is not just for planning, but to discover and deal with any problems prior to the draft.

I don't mean to pile on requests, but the PEBA draft is coming up next weekend so when will the draft pool be added to Statslab?

I just don't want to run into the issues we had last year. I think the solutions posted in here are great and should definitely be implemented.

All teams should be able to put together their draft lists in StatsLab. Draft pools are synched.

Still to do is synch the draft orders in Ootp and StatsLab and put together a draft list for open teams

Quick PSA:

Remember that the ratings in Statslab are vastly different (inflated) than OSA and likely your scouts. I recommend making your list in-game and once you are happy, recreating it in Statslab. We had some people draft off of Statslab ratings and the players ended up being walking trash in-game.

It's your choice, but Statslab has some seriously wacky ratings.
