Re: PEBA-cast, Episode 4 - April 2024 Edition!
It is time for a long-overdue edition of PEBAcast!
Due to some technical difficulties lately, there was an unusually long delay between episodes, but we are back and episodes should arrive more regularly now!
This was recorded after the April 21st sim.
Hope you enjoy it!
(Note: It is mentioned in the episode, but if you have any subjects you would like us to talk about, or ideas to enhance the PEBAcast, certainly let us know!)

Great job guys! I appreciate the preseason prediction Reg
Thanks for recognizing my issue at 3rd base! I had nothing and was desperate to fill that gap so over paid for an average guy who has been a total bust! Hence why I signed four 3rd basemen this past off season. I also smoked away my 1st rounder! woo hoooo! I wonder where you got that inside info Ken!
I'd happily be a guest on a future podcast since I live close by Ken.

I really enjoy listening to these podcasts. It never gets old hearing what others in the league are noticing and thinking about. I hope you haven't jinxed my club. The IL Atlantic promises to be a dogfight all year.
I wonder if part of the reason the small budget clubs didn't drop more media money on free agency is related to those clubs not having current GMs. Not sure who those clubs are. I do know Bakersfield found itself that way recently and may be the reason they lost so many guys to free agency; notably SP Fred Benjamin.

Any plans for a draft recap or stretch run podcast?

Re: PEBA-cast, Episode 4 - April 2024 Edition!
Glad this was bumped...I hadn't listened to it because of huge workload. Lots of interesting things here.
The signings of free agents by the big rev/budget teams rather than the small teams was completely predictable. The across-the-board revenue increase (meaning big teams got increases, too...just not as large as smaller teams) meant that all teams had more cash...but big teams have much bigger budgets (100% gap between smallest and biggest). So just giving small teams money right away does not help because they can't spend it immediately, but giving big teams _any_ money helps them. This is an argument we had for weeks on the forums before the board took their action.
The final results aren't in, and won't be in before the playoffs compete, but squinting a little, the actual revenue results look like: (1) teams across the league have all seen their revenue increase (some by a large amount, which seems good until you overlay it with the entire league and account for the fact that we contracted), and (2) about 6ish teams in the middle will increase a little more than the average.
Bottom line: the overall effect of this change on relative standings of competition has been essentially negligible.
The unfortunate fact of the OOTP environment is basically that if you want to improve competition, you cannot do it by pulling the weak links up (at least not quickly). Instead, you have to impede the ability of big market teams from wielding their power. What we did was to improve the ability of big revenue/budget teams to make additions at about the same level as small revenue/budget teams.

As an example using myself, the media contract increase essentially gave Toyama Pablo Prado. We could not have afforded to add him without it.
Our budget this season was $174M. It will increase next year to $192M, at which point our 6-season (3 real years) march to being among the bigger fish should be almost complete.

I'm hoping to get back into it soon. Real life took over for a bit but I should be ready to get back in the saddle here soon.

That is good news, I'm really looking forward to a new podcast. You could discuss the influx of new & 'new-old' GM's and how you think it will affect the dynamic of the PEBA i.e. new tactics, new outlooks on the way forward and whether any of them will "get one over" the established old guard? Also perhaps how you think/hope the PEBA will develop now with a new Commish and almost a full crew of GM's again
