That's Quite a Hill

Looking at the remaining schedule for the Shisa, currently 7 1/2 back in the wild card:

Nine games against division leading Shin Seiki (78-47)
Nine games against current wild card Toyama (73-50)
Six games against division leading Aurora (78-45)
Six games against Reno (37-87)
Four games against division leading Crystal Lake (77-47)
Three games against current wild card Duluth (70-54)

We may well be done for the year. Hard to envision making up ground with that schedule.

Okinawa Rolls the Dice on Sato

Shiba Taguchi, Ryukyu Sports News

Naha, Okinawa
- January 12, 2024: Shisa GM Morris Ragland has let loose his inner riverboat gambler, signing Japanese starting pitcher Yoshihasa Sato to a two-year, 2.9B yen, deal. This contract basically picks up the last year of Sato's contract with the now defunct LRS club, Sagamihara, and adds a year. The thirty-five year old right-hander has only pitched three years as a professional, accumulating a 3.19 ERA, 3.10 FIP, and 14.5 WAR in the short-lived Japanese league. Sources say that the team intends for Sato to take the place of the disappointing Jorge Jiménez (5.46 ERA) in the number four spot.

Sato looks like a nice gamble generally but not sure where he lands for me price-wise. With a flood of new media deal money and a premium on pitching in the PEBA $28Mil might be a sweet deal. At only 2 years it's tough not to try it out, even for an aging guy. His LRS numbers are pretty good. Hope he works out.

I'm not superstitious at all, but the correlation between my writing something nice about my team and my team taking a pratfall in the next sim is uncanny.

Okinawa Home Stand Spoiled?

Shiba Taguchi, Ryukyu Sports News

Naha, Okinawa
- April 21, 2025: Shisa manager Kijuro Yoshida isn't one to panic, which may be good, because his lineup if floundering. Eleven games into the season, Okinawa (2-9) is the owner of the worst record in baseball. In his team's home debut, in a packed, brand new stadium, against divisional foe Neo-Tokyo, Yoshida watched his team lose 6-5 after a Tyson Cameron RBI single in the top of the ninth. And then they lost the next game, and the one after that, and the Shisa were swept.

The pitching has been average. The fielding has been atrocious (dead last in defensive efficiency), and the hitting has been largely unwatchable (dead last in runs scored). Ten Shisa position players currently have an OPS+ below 100, six of those have an OPS+ below 50, and two have somehow posted a negative OPS+. The team as a whole is hitting at a feeble .194 clip.

Last year's breakout star, Jerry Rutledge, now typifies the team's struggles. He simply no longer looks as if he belongs on a big league field. With a slash line of .108/.190/.189, while batting third in the lineup, the outfielder looks to be in need of help. There are many who question whether hitting coach Robby Fitzgerald, lightly regarded as an instructor, is truly the man to provide that help.

GM Morris Ragland has been quick to remind everyone that it's still April, and not the time for rash measures. All the same, this team is in a tale spin, and needs to pull out of it in a hurry. Home series against Kalamazoo (7-7), Bakersfield (10-4), and Reno (3-11) remain as the Shisa try to salvage their April.
