NeTo NoTes: an Akira Blog 2029

#1 Post by Akira »

April 8, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan The 2029 season marks a turning point for the Akira franchise. No longer in rebuilding mode or a surprise playoff contender, opening day carried expectations that Neo-Tokyo is a team to be reckoned with. Can they live up to those expectations when no one will be taking them for granted?

Ne-To begins the season on the road at Kalamazoo and Duluth, both coming off down seasons. Newly acquired SP José Santos opens the season by tossing 5 scoreless innings and LF Ramiro Reynoso, filling in for the injured Jeff Grier, provides all the offense they need with a 3rd inning grand slam.

Game 2 saw another 3rd inning outburst. Seven runs was all the offense the Akira got, and again all they needed as Alfonso Ramos picked up a 7-1 victory.

Miguel Alverez was shelled in relief as the Akira dropped game 3, 8-2. The outing led to a quick demotion to AAA for Alverez at the end of the week.

The weekend series at Duluth began in dramatic fashion as the Akira launched a 3 run 9th inning comeback and finished off the Warriors in 14 innings thanks to a Tomás Martínez solo HR. José Fernández picked up his first win and Santos his 2nd to complete the sweep.

Neo-Tokyo finishes the week at 5-1, good for a half game lead in the Rising Sun division. A tough homestand begins against Auroura (4-2) and defending champs Fargo (5-1).

POW:SP Jose Santos 2 wins and C Hector Rodriguez .368/2 HR

April 15, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan 54,737 fans welcome the Akira to their home opener against Aurora. 3B Guillermo Justavo strokes his 3rd HR of the young season in the 3rd and Tomás Martínez belts his 4th, a 3-run shot that puts the game away in the 7th. Alfonso Ramos picks up his 2nd victory and the Akira hand All-Star John Turner his first defeat. C Hector Rodriguez continues his torrid start by going 3 for 3, increasing his BA to .455.

Game 2 saw Borealis SP Bartolo Esquivez shut down the Akira offense, as they muster only 5 hits in the 4-1 defeat. Julio Diaz has another bad outing in game 3 as they fall 7-4, losing their first series of the year.

Fargo comes in for a 4 game set in a playoff rematch with the defending league champs. They split the series 2 games apiece as NeTo follows resounding defeats with solid comebacks to finish the week against 2 tough opponents at 3-4.

Notable NoTes:
-Jose Santos wins his third of the season. The FA signee came at the expense of a 1st round compensation pick but has been impressive out of the gate.
-ROY Jeff Grier will see his first action of the season following a thumb injury. With Cal Morrissey finally living up to expectations (.302 BA) this year and Tomas Martinez off to a torrid start (4 HR/13 RBI/.308) the outfield of the future may finally be in sync.
-Martinez suffered a knee contusion on Sunday which may affect his status this week. The injury is day-to-day.
-SP Julio Diaz's poor start (10.38 ERA) may open the way for Luigi Bright to return to the starting rotation. Bright has taken his demotion without complaint and has been solid in relief (2.06 ERA) in 5 appearances.
-C Hector Rodriguez has had an impressive start at the plate this year but backup Atsumori Kichida has finished the week with an even higher BA (.429). On the other side of the spectrum platooning 1Bs Koshiro Nakashima and Chuck Glass are a combined .178 with no HRs.

The homestand concludes this week with 3 against Toyoma (4-8) and a 3 game rematch at Fargo (9-4).

April 22, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan The homestand continues and the fans are eager to see 2028 Wunderkind Award winner Jeff Grier see his first action of 2029. He doesn’t disappoint in his first at bat. A single followed by a steal of second base and a dash home on Ramiro Reynoso’s base hit manufactures a run with speed as much as with their bats. Alas, a third straight poor outing by SP julio Diaz dampens the excitement and Toyoma’s Okakura Ishikawa hits a 9th inning fastball from Júlio González for a 2-run home run to put Toyama in front to stay.
In game 2, The Toyama Wind Dancers fall to José Fernández and his Neo-Tokyo teammates. The final score was 3-1 in favor of the Akira. Júlio González earned the save for Neo-Tokyo, his 2nd of the year. The Wind Dancers drop to 5-9 and continue their uninspiring start to the 2029 season. Fernández imposed his will on the Wind Dancers, scattering 5 hits over 8 innings while striking out 8. The left-hander upped his season record to 2-1.
Game 3: A scoreless pitching duel between Toyama Wind Dancers starter José Castillo and Jose Santos lasts into the 8th until Katai Nomura makes it 3-0 in favor of Toyama by delivering a 3-run home run off Santos. It is Santos’ first defeat of the young season.
A visit to Jurassic Park in Fargo turns into a disaster. After a split of their home series the week before, the Akira are swept by the World Champs. Luigi Bright shines in his return from the pen with a solid outing in game 3 but NT is shut out by Nathan Dempster and fall below .500 at 9-10, having lost 9 of their last 12. Despite that, they are only 2 games back of division leading Shin Seiki.

April 29, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan After a solid 6-1 start to the season the slumping Akira head to Aurora (11-8) for two. NeTo pulls back to .500 with a win over Borealis in Game 1. The Akira rode a fine outing from starter José Fernández at Northern Lights Park. The final score was 4-2. Fernández, now 3-1, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing no earned runs. With the loss, Aurora falls to 11-9.
Tomás Martínez, who is tied for 4th in the SL with a 1.020 OPS, helped out the Neo-Tokyo cause in the top of the fifth inning with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. For the game, the designated hitter drew 2 walks.

Game 2: Neo-Tokyo first baseman Chuck Glass was 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 3 to earn player of the game honors. José Santos earned the win for Neo-Tokyo. He lasted 8.2 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 10 hits, while striking out 4. With the win, he raised his record to 4-1. The win gives Neo-Tokyo a record of 11-10.

With hopes of gaining momentum, NT returns home for two against the struggling Kalamazoo Badgers (6-14). It was not to be though, as they drop Game 1 2-1, managing only four meager hits. Despite a ninth inning comeback, they drop Game 2 in 11 innings to fall below .500 once again. The offense seems sluggish and out of sorts despite solid pitching. They cannot seem to find their rhythm as a team.

Back home to finish out the month of April against Duluth. Finally, an easy win as Luigi Bright turns in another solid start. Benefiting from an exceptional performance from Jeffrey Grier, they defeat the Warriors, 7-1. Grier was 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3.

The teams split the final two contests and the Akira finish the month at an even 13-13, only 2 GB of first place and trailed by a surprising Okinawa (12-13) squad. With a day off and a two game trip to Shin Seiki ahead they are hopeful of jump starting their season.

NeTo Notes: Jose Santos was named Sovereign League Pitcher of the Month for April. With a 5-1 record, he fanned 23 in 41.2 IP with a 1.94 ERA.

The offensive struggles are most glaring on the right side of the infield. The platooning first basemen Koshiro Nakashima and Chuck Glass are a combined .186 BA/3 HR/ 13 RBI for the month and 2B B.J. Gassaway fared no better (.182 BA/ 1 HR/ 4 RBI).

May 6, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan After a travel day Monday the team heads to Genesis Park for their first match up versus Shin Seiki. They manage 8 hits and 2 walks against Jose Hernandez on Tuesday but fail to capitalize, falling 4-2. Game 2 sees them jump on reigning SL Golden Arm winner Yakamochi Suitani for 6 early runs but closer Julio Gonzalez’ first blown save of the year fails to hold a 2 run ninth inning lead and they lose in 11 to drop the short series.

The team struggles to find traction and consistency. The schedule does them no favors as first place Crystal Lake (17-12) comes to Japan.

And yet the Akira show resiliency. They sweep the Sandgnats at home, topped by an 8th inning 6-run outburst that caps a 10-6 comeback win on Sunday.
The win pulls them over .500 once again (16-15) but they trail the Evas by 3.5 games.

The joy of the weekend sweep is tempered by injuries to 3B Guillermo Justavo and 2B BJ Gassaway that stretch the bench to its limit. The front office looks for back up help via trade or free agency. A nine game road trip looms as Canton (11-20) and Crystal Lake (17-15) await.

Tomas Martinez wins Player of the Week honors, punishing opposing pitchers with a .438 average, 4 home runs and 6 RBI.

May 13, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan The see saw season continues as 2 disappointing losses to Canton sandwich a shutout win by Javier Ferreira. A 4 game set with the Crystal Lake begins with an impressive performance by Jose Fernandez who tosses 8 shutout innings for his fourth win. But the Sandgnats get revenge for the previous weekends sweep by taking three straight one run wins.

3B Guillermo Justavo is selected the Sovereign League Player of the Week, batting .400 with 5 home runs, 7 RBI and 7 RS, giving Neo-Tokyo back to back PoW honorees.

A 2-5 week leaves the Akira at 18-20 on the year, 5 GB of division leading SS. The road trip concludes with two tough games vs Bakersfield (21-15) and home against Yuma (15-22)

May 20, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan After a Monday off day, the week starts on a high note as Neo-Tokyo comes from behind to edge the Bears 5-4. Bakersfield got a strong outing from Lance Harris in the second game of their 2 game set, as the Bears defeated the Neo-Tokyo Akira, 5-0. Bakersfield goes to 22-16, Neo-Tokyo to 19-21.

Harris's performance can only be described as masterful. He notched 5 strikeouts in 7 innings while allowing 2 hits. Harris is tied for 3rd in the SL with 6 quality starts, and goes to 2-2 on the year with 25 strikeouts.

Yuma comes to town as the Akira begin a 10-game home stand with the opportunity to make some hay. And they do just that in game 1 as they trounce the Bulldozers 6-1 behind Jose Santos strong outing. Santos continues to pay dividends as he notches his 6th win. Yet, again the joy is short lived as NeTo manages only six total hits as they drop the remaining 2 contests, falling to 20-23 on the season after a 2-3 week.

Seven tough home games await as Reno and Bakersfield come to the Neo-Tokyo Grounds.

Neo-Tokyo manager Kata Hayagawa is a winner. His track record after nineteen years in the Aurora Borealis organization proves that. In his six years managing Aurora’s AAA Thornton club, he guided the FasTrax to the playoffs every season, winning the Championship twice. Promoted to the parent club in 2016 he presided over PEBA’s premier dynasty by winning the Rodriguez Cup 4 out of 5 years, missing the playoffs only twice in thirteen seasons. He never failed to have a winning record. So when he and Aurora parted ways after the 2028 campaign the Neo-Tokyo Akira came calling. Having made their first PEBA playoff appearance the previous year, Neo-Tokyo was looking for an experienced hand to guide them to even greater heights. No one could fit the bill better than Kata. He is something of a legend in his home country of Japan based on those accomplishments overseas. His managerial style, which is conventional and balanced, has served him well. Hayagawa creates a relaxed atmosphere. It’s not uncommon for him to shoot the breeze with his hitters in the clubhouse for hours after a game. His laid back style benefits the clubhouse when the team is winning games. He has had his detractors, though. Some have said his style doesn’t help when there is tension. Some former players have implied that he is perhaps too laid back, not taking control of difficult situations that can arise in a crowded locker room filled with strong personalities. But results speak for themselves. And his calm demeanor may be just what the Akira need after a bumpy and frustrating start to their 2029 season.

So when the lowly Yuma Bulldozers took two of three from the Akira in front of their home crowd the frustration stemming from inconsistent and sluggish play was felt in the stands and in the clubhouse. Kata felt it was time to address his players as a group after Sunday’s loss. Perhaps some thought that a motivational tongue lashing was in order, or at least inevitable. But that is not his style. Instead, the 53 year old skipper had a genuinely simple message: Relax. Yes, calm down. It’s a long season. It’s early. There is a lot of talent in this room and in Kata’s experience talent always succeeds over time. Get your minds out of the way of your ability and enjoy the ride.

A rather simple message but there seemed to be a collective sigh of relief, as if a sudden release of pressure had escaped through the rafters. As the players slowly drifted out, heading to their respective homes to prepare for tomorrow’s game, the night seemed to have a crisp, rejuvenating air to it. As they reflected on what they had heard the team separately yet collectively sensed that while the message was one of calm reassurance, their sense of purpose –their drive - was reborn. No panic, just a focus on what to do each and every day, regardless of the previous day’s outcome.

It was pure Kata. Would that mindset spur the Akira on to the ambitious goals they had at the start of the season? If so, Kata Hayagawa may very well add to his already legendary resume.

May 27, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan While Reno were having struggles of their own the Akira were still bruising from what should have been an easy series with the Bulldozers. So they set their minds on taking care of business, thanks to Captain Hayagawa’s experienced advice. And take care of business is what they did. Three close but solid wins, including 2 walk offs, won by a total of 4 runs gave them a much needed boost. A 4 game weekend series with Bakersfield (26-18) would test their resolve. Yet solid pitching and timely hitting enabled them to take 3 of 4 with a lone 12 inning loss. A 6-1 week and just like that the Akira were back over .500 and just 2.5 GB of first. Silently, the players would glance over at Kata and wonder: “Does he know something we don’t?”

With their confidence rising it was off to Yuma (18-31) to seek redemption and a 4 game rematch with Reno (20-30) that would extend through Monday.

May 31, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan The Akira return the favor and take 2 of 3 from the Bulldozers on their turf. After starting the month of May with only 7 wins against 10 losses they end up by taking 8 of 10 and finish with a winning record for the month (15-12). After a welcome day off Thursday they travel to Reno to start the month of June. They sit at 28-25 for the season and 2.5 GB of division leading Shin Seiki.

June, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan The Akira enter the month of June with an invigorated spirit and some results to confirm it. Would that prove to be just a temporary boost, like a sugar rush or were they really becoming the title contender they thought they could be? The month of June proved they were. A 21-8 record vaulted them from outside the wild card standings to first place in the SL Rising Sun division with a 49-33 record. Two 5 game and one 6 game winning streak highlighted the month, the lone downer was a 3 game sweep at home at the hands of the Warriors (27-41 entering the series).

Jose Santos (10-3/ 2.26 ERA) was proving to be one of the top starters in the league, the bullpen as a whole was one of the best as well. Jeff Grier (.336/ 43 SB) was proving that last season was no fluke and Tomas Martinez and Guillermo Justavo were the anchors of the offense. The dog days of summer were approaching. Could they keep up their momentum and confidence?

July, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan With the All Star game approaching the Akira seemed a bit winded, as if they let up from the previous months exertions. Going 4-4 through the eight games heading into the break left them at 53-37, a half game ahead of Shin Seiki after a split of their weekend series.

Neo-Tokyo had 4 players selected to this year’s All-Star team: 3B Guillermo Justavo (as a starter), SP Jose Santos, CL Julio Gonzalez and Jeff Grier (as an injury replacement). Notably absent was Tomas Martinez (.304 BA/ 17 HR/ 61 RBI) in a crowded OF pool.

After a much needed break the team assembled on Thursday July 12 for their playoff push. After stumbling out of the gate with a loss to Toyoma (37-52) the Akira reel off a 5 game win streak and then another a week later as they keep the momentum going. They finish July with a record of 18-8 for the month and 67-41 on the season and increase their division lead to 3.5 games over Shin Seiki, who had dropped 7 of 11 at the end of July. It is by far the biggest lead NT has had in the division at this point of the season, having never won their division before in the PEBA or LRS.

On the down side, the team received news that an injury to Alfonso Ramos would most likely keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season. Ramos was injured while throwing a pitch in the Akira-Borealis matchup earlier that day. Doctors revealed he had a shoulder inflammation and recovery could take up to 7 months. As the trade deadline approached the front office scrambled to find a suitable fill in but in the end the team determined that with Julio Diaz in hand and pitching better they would keep their assets and go with what they had.

August 5, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan The team is as hot as the dog days of August. They sweep Duluth and Aurora, both on the road as they complete a perfect 7-0 week. Jeff Grier is on fire and wins Player of the Week honors. For the week the 25 year old left fielder had an amazing .650 BA, upping his season average to .339 and 64 SBs. Luigi Bright, having started the year in the bullpen, had two victories and upped his total to 11 with a 2.47 ERA. Tomas Martinez is flirting with .300 and has 79 RBI, Justavo not far behind with 70.

The week finished with the Akira at 72-41 and a 4.5 game lead in the Rising Sun division. Next week: 3 at home vs Crystal Lake (69-43) and 3 at Canton (41-70)

August 12, 2029 Neo-Tokyo, Japan The Akira win 2 of 3 in both series this week. Tomas Martinez is on a tear, winning PoW honors by batting .579 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. He now leads the SL in RBI with 90 and in slugging pct (.943). It marks the second time this year that Neo-Tokyo has had back-to-back PoWs. Jeff Grier is second in BA at .326, a mere percentage point behind Crystal Lake’s Clarence Carpenter. Julio Gonzalez leads the SL in saves with 32. Luigi Bright picked up his 12th win and Julio Diaz, the man he replaced in the rotation earlier in the year, pitched 5.2 innings of shutout ball in his return to the rotation as he replaced the injured Alfonso Ramos.

The 4-2 week puts the Akira at 76-43 and 6 games ahead in the Rising Sun division. They currently have the best record in all of the PEBA, a first for the franchise. After an off day Monday, it’s off to Crystal Lake (72-47) and Bakersfield (69-48).
