Opening Day 2024

#1 Post by Zephyrs »

Opening Day has arrived and the 2024 Zephyrs look quite a bit different from a year ago. We are sporting 4 new position players, 3 new relievers and 2 new starting pitchers. Our owner wants us to try and play .500 ball this season and I may be a little delusional but I think we will.

MEET THE NEW GUYS

[*] Allen Guthrie was signed to a large free agent contract and will be the team's #2 starter. He won 18 games back in 2021. He was used as a reliever last season but has a long track record as a starter. A big part of the Zephyrs season will depend on Guthrie, if he can put up around 200 innings and post a winning record, the season will likely be a success for Reno.

[*] Héctor Rivera was a Rule V draft pick. There was a question as to whether he would be a starter this season or a reliever and it appears that the young Ace-In-The-Making will get his shot in the rotation. His spring training stats weren't great but he should have a fairly long leash at the beginning of the season.

[*] Hisamitsu Suzuki is a legitimate closer and that is something Reno hasn't had for a long time. Suzuki was a free agent signing. He managed an impressive 44 saves last season.

[*] Fernando Varela came aboard via trade. He is a decent lefty reliever who should se a lot of action this season.

[*] Denny Lowe is another Rule V pick-up. He will be used primarily as a middle reliever. Like Rivera, he also had some success in Triple-A last season. The hope is that both Rule V pitchers can put up respectable numbers this season.

[*] Roy Meeks is finally getting his shot at the PEBA level after putting up very good numbers in Triple-A for 3-plus seasons. He has been an on-base machine in the minors and will be playing centerfield and batting near the top of the order.

[*] Christian Webb was the first overall selection in the contraction draft. He will be a huge boost to the Zephyrs offense and defense.

[*] Torazo Kodama is perhaps the player that excites the front office the most. While he is not expected to be the biggest contributor on offense, his outstanding glove work should be a boon to the Zephyrs groundball pitchers.

[*] Ken Tuttle was a free agent addition and isn't expected to do much more than he has in the past. If he can provide something in the neighborhood of a 75 OPS+ and some solid defense, he can be an upgrade for the Zephyrs.
