2028 Draft and Follow

#1 Post by Lions »

New management in Kalamazoo has fans excited about the future of the team, but there will be quite a number of growing pains over the short term. That said, the future began to take clearer shape on June 7th when the new regime presided over their first amateur draft. With the second pick in the draft, a lot was at stake for the first selection.

1.2 (2nd overall) - RHP Robby Wiggins - (Retired 3/4/2030, to pursue basketball)
Wiggins was likely going to go #1 overall to Yuma until he tore his labrum less than a month before the draft. Doctors don't think the labrum tear is particularly severe, and should have him back on a mound early next year. He's a 3-time collegiate All-Star and won the 2027 USCBA Outstanding Pitcher Award. His college career ended with a record of 22-6 and a 1.39 ERA. He struck out 355 batters in 252.1 innings. Badger brass is hoping the injury will just be a blip... something just about every pitcher goes through in their career... and that he'll pick up right where he left off next year. It's certainly a big gamble.

2.3 (37th) - RHP Ogai Ono
High school hurler Ono is considered by many to be a bit of a stretch this early in the draft, but the team is extremely high on him and didn't want to lose out on him before their 3rd round pick. Ono went just 9-7 in his high school career over 32 starts, but that did come with a 1.70 ERA and 234 K's in 174.2 innings. He walked just 19 batters. What really attracted Kalamazoo scouts, though, was his pitch arsenal. Team scouts rave about his curve ball and change up. The latter is of particular note in that he really doesn't throw a straight fastball. His complementary pitches include a cutter, slider, and forkball, all of which the team believes can develop into above average offerings.

3.2 (60th) - C José Moreno
There were 4 catchers taken in the draft ahead of Moreno, but Kalamazoo insists that they had him ranked highest among backstops. Whether that's brilliance or an indictment remains to be seen. The team thinks he projects similarly to Canton's Ryan Lambert, but with slightly better defensive chops. The Badgers already have a top catching prospect in Claudio Pérez, but cited a severe lack of organizational depth at the position as a key weakness to be addressed.

4.2 (87th) - 3B Alex Payne
It's a bit hard to see exactly what the team does in Payne after he managed to hit just .221 over four years in college. There's some quality defensive skills, but nothing other worldly. He's got decent size and could perhaps learn to play some in the outfield, too. At best, he projects to hit for some power with a moderate average should he make it to the show.

5.2 (112nd) - 1B Jorge Mejía
If he makes it there, Mejía will almost certainly get to the PEBA on the strength of his bat. That's not uncommon for first baseman, but even there he looks uncomfortable defensively. It's likely he'll be a DH, and that means he will have to hit. Scouts like his power, and he did slug .515 for Illinois. Worryingly, his average dropped every year, and that's a trend that can't continue. Team officials rave about his character. By all accounts, he's smart, good looking, and gosh darn it people like him! Whether or not his physical skills reach those lofty standards will determine his fate.

6.2 (138th) - RHP Lou Denton - (Failed to sign)
Denton's 6-16 record for Winter Springs High School doesn't immediately scream, "Draft me!", but here we are. The Badgers say they like his personality, but rumors suggest he may be intent on returning to college to see if he can improve on his draft position. We understand the team is eager to land him regardless, so we'll see how that plays out.

7.2 (164th) - RF Natsu Ohashi
The Japanese switch hitter played his college ball for Ciefuegos. His best skills appear to be plate discipline and an ability to blend into the woodwork.

8.2 (190th) - C Robinson Martínez
The second catcher drafted by the Badgers, Martínez was higher on the team's draft board than several catchers drafted ahead of him. That's not an indication that they think he's that much better than those guys. A journeyman backup career is probably the best the team can reasonably expect here.

9.2 (216th) - LHP Jude Hollington
After taking 3 righties in the first 6 rounds, the lefty Hollington is a change of pace. He's the kind of player that you root for... he didn't even play college ball as a freshman at Oregon State. Despite being 21, he's still a long way off, but that's why he's drafted this low.

10.2 (242nd) - LF Jorge Torres (Released 7/22/30)
A lanky 6'4" outfielder, Torres had a reputation for speed at Tulane due to his track & field activities. He never really translated that to the basepaths, but it'll be something the team works with him on in the minors.

11.2 (268th) - SS Elias Simmons - (Failed to sign - redrafted in 2029)
Simmons has a decent glove and some speed, but so much for doing your homework. Simmons tweeted after the draft that he would not be signing with the Badgers. Kalamazoo probably isn't too worked up over this one.

12.2 (294th) - RHP Will Green - (Released 6/25/2029)
Green's got an upper 90's fastball that could see some improvement if he can harness his 6'7" frame. He'll get a chance to fail as a starter before the team sends him to the pen.

13.2 (320th) - 2B Takayuki Ikeda - (Traded to OKA 7/30/2029)
Ikeda's a stereotypical diminutive Japanese middle infielder. Without the stereotypically good work ethic.

14.2 (346th) - SS Clint Thompson
Thompson can pick it a little with the glove. He can also play some defense. He did help Ohio State to the USCBA World Series, despite 56 K's on the year. You know who struck out more than him? First round draft pick and OSU teammate Paul Oglethorpe. Thompson can't be that bad, right?

15.2 (372nd) - 3B Tim Hamilton
Kalamazoo's Mr. Irrelevant, Hamilton will get a chance to prove he can't play before the team gives up on him. Some in the organization thinks he has the potential to reach the majors if he can learn on the job.

It's not even two weeks after the draft and the Badgers have just one player left with whom we're still negotiating. That is, of course, injured 1st round pick Robby Wiggins. Kalamazoo brass is a bit miffed in that they've offered Wiggins exactly what he said he was looking for and he hasn't responded one way or another. The rest of the team's draft picks have all signed.

On June 16th, SP Ogai Ono learned that he finished as the runner up in the IHS Oustanding Pitcher Award voting. Two days later he made his professional debut against the Angoon Avalanche and learned that the pros are quite something different. He gave up 6 runs in 4 innings and has an ERA ten times higher than what he posted in high school. It's just one start, but certainly a humbling experience.

Third baseman Alex Payne was also mentioned in his former league's season awards. He earned a Glove Wizard award for his work at the hot corner in the USCBA. His debut at Ketchikan was similarly impressive, hitting .385 with a pair of doubles and 3 walks, getting on base in all four games played. Manager Bob Cates was so impressed with him that Payne is already being promoted to Single A Nampa.

With regards to pitcher Lou Denton and shortstop Elias Simmons, the Badgers are fairly surprised that both players have broken off negotiations. The team was hoping that with their budget room that they could overpay and convince them to join the team, but that was apparently a false hope. Denton has indicated that he wants to go to college, but Simmons clearly just didn't have any interest in being a Badger. The 21 year old shortstop is unlikely to get a signing bonus with another team on the order of what the Badgers were offering, if he even catches on. All in all, the loss of these two picks isn't a terrible thing for Kalamazoo, but perhaps it will be a learning experience for the team to do a bit more homework deeper in the draft next year.

The big news this week was that #2 overall pick Robby Wiggins signed and can now begin his recovery from a torn labrum under the watchful eye of the Kalamazoo medical staff. Wiggins should be ready to begin baseball activities early next year, and the team expects him to make a full recovery.

2.3 - SP Ogai Ono (SS-A)
Ono bounced back from a rough first outing to pitched 7 2/3 innings of 1 run ball against Barrow. He gave up 6 hits but also 6 walks while striking out just 2. That's not a recipe for success, and Barrow's Chris Boggs got player of the game after giving up 1 run in 6 1/3 innings. Neither pitcher factored into the decision, as Ketchikan won 2-1 on a 9th inning sac fly. Boggs, incidentally, was the 3rd to last player drafted in the 2027 draft.

3.2 - C José Moreno - (SS-A)
Moreno got his first taste of the pros and it wasn't anything to get terribly excited about. Yes, he walked 6 times and posted a .385 OBP, but that was with a .200 average.

4.2 - 3B Alex Payne - (A)
Payne's promotion to single A Nampa after just a few games in Ketchikan went predictably slow. He went 7 for 30, although 3 of those hits were doubles. The defense looked good.

5.2 - 1B Jorge Mejía - (A)
Like Moreno, Mejía got his professional career off to a slow start. He went 3 for 20 with 1 home run.

Quick Hits:
7.2 - RF Natsu Ohashi was the man responsible for the run off of Chris Boggs, a 7th inning home run. He's got 2 on the season and is hitting .300 with an .895 OPS in the early going.

8.2 - C Robinson Martínez was 4 for 9 in backup duty. Two of those hits were 9th inning pinch hits that directly contributed to walk off wins. He scored the winning run in Ono's start on June 23rd, then plated the tying run with a single on the 25th.

2.3 - SP Ogai Ono (SS-A)
Ono is now 2-4 in 10 starts, having not allowed more than 3 runs since his debut. That was "helped" in part by his being pulled from a recent start after complaining of arm soreness. The team skipped a start and he threw 5 innings last time out while allowing just a single unearned run. His run prevention, to this point, has been aided by a bit of luck. While he has a 3.06 ERA, his FIP is 4.53 due to a high number of walks allowed. So far, he's given up 28 walks and struck out 27, so that isn't a ratio that bodes well for future success. Still, at just 18 years old, he's holding his own against mostly older players.

3.2 - C José Moreno - (A)
Moreno was promoted to Nampa after a week in Ketchikan based on scout recommendations rather than performance. He has since shown that trust wasn't misplaced, but he isn't beating the world on fire, either. He's hitting .267 and drawing some walks. One thing the team is going to need to work with him on in detail is his defense. He's thrown out just 2 of 37 would be base stealers.

4.2 - 3B Alex Payne - (SS-A)
Payne was not at all pleased about being demoted to Ketchikan, but the move was entirely warranted. In 40 games wit Nampa he hit just .176 and posted a 62 OPS+. That's terrible. This past week he hit .333 with a home run and 3 walks, good eough for a .983 OPS. It seems that SS-A suits him quite well. Rumor suggests he'll be back in Nampa in short order, but whether or not he can actually hit there yet is an open question.

5.2 - 1B Jorge Mejía - (SS-A)
We mistakenly listed Mejía as being in Nampa with the last update, which wasn't accurate. He's been with Ketchikan the whole time. He's been hitting moderately well, posting a 128 OPS+ with a few home runs and drawing walks. It would be nice to see him strike out a bit less.

Quick Hits:
8.2 - C Robinson Martínez continues to hit well for Ketchikan. He had 7 hits including a pair of doubles and a home run this week, to lift his seasonal OPS to .770. That doesn't sound high, but in Ketchikan it's good for a 130 OPS+.

9.2 SP Jude Hollington and 12.2 SP Will Green both have ERA's below 3.00 and are tied with each other for the team lead of 5 wins each.

13.2 - 2B Takayuki Ikeda has been a pleasant surprise by leading Ketchikan in average, on base percentage, and slugging. It's all doubles with him, but he's done enough to be the lone Salmon All-Star this year. His .323 average is currently second in SS-A.

Ono’s an interesting guy to follow - that W/K ratio is alarming, though. I don’t know enough yet about the evolution of OOTP prospects to know how often they can grow out of control issues like that. Will be interested to see.

Good update - I like this feature.

2.3 - SP Ogai Ono (SS-A)
Ono continues to pitch well despite having a terrible K/BB ratio (more on that below). In his last 4 starts, he's 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA, 7 K, and 13 BB.

3.2 - C José Moreno - (A)
Moreno hasn't been hitting well recently, batting .180 with 2 home runs and some walks over the last few weeks. That has lowered his OPS+ to 91...

4.2 - 3B Alex Payne - (A)
Back up to Nampa after a brief refresh in Ketchikan, it didn't really do to the trick. If Moreno has been hitting poorly, Payne looks like a little leaguer. His recent performance is a .158 average with almost no power at all. He has a .443 OPS over the past few weeks. That's not a typo.

There is clearly something in the water in Nampa. As a whole, the team is just terrible offensively. Since August 14th, when the last update was posted, the TEAM OPS is .461. They can't even blame the ballpark, as the park factor is still favorable to offense by a decent amount.

5.2 - 1B Jorge Mejía - (SS-A)
Mejía continues to hit well, raising his OPS+ from 128 a few weeks ago to 147 now. He hit .369 with 3 home runs while leading the team in hits and RBI.

Quick Hits:
7.2 - RF Natsu Ohashi - He's bounced back recently, hitting .315 with 13 walks... good for a .472 OBP in the past 18 games.

8.2 - C Robinson Martínez, like Mejía, he's playing well. He hasn't been as good over the past few weeks, but he is continues to trend positively.

9.2 SP Jude Hollington and 12.2 SP Will Green continue to post similar lines. Both now have 7 wins in 15 starts. Green's been slightly better from a WHIP and ERA standpoint. He's given up fewer home runs, too, but Hollington is striking everyone out. It should be noted that both pitchers have allowe about 10 more walks than Ono. It seems that his K/BB issue may be more of a K issue than a BB issue. The walks aren't good, but the K-rate is extremely low.

That walk/strikeout ratio is really something. How Ono continues to thrive while playing with fire like that is interesting.

SS-A hitters just stink? I think it must be a lack of stringing hits to take advantage of those walks. I'm more worried that he's not striking enough guys out (under 4 K/9IP), because then he's relying on his defense to an absurd amount. He's got a .255 BABIP, so it's low but not unreal. Some of it's unearned runs, too. He's kind of a freak show.

10/10/2028
The Ketchikan Salmon made the playoffs and continue their run through the postseason. Despite being only a 3rd place team, they've knocked off the Cold Bay Eleven and the Akutan Island Eagles. They get the Wasilla Sledge Dogs next.

2.3 - SP Ogai Ono (SS-A)
Ono only allowed 1 run over his final three starts of the season, but didn't get a decision in any of them and the Salmon lost all three games. The K/BB ratio stayed low. He finished the year 4-5 with a 2.48 ERA, which was second among Ketchikan starters. He had 47 BB's and 38 K's. So far in the postseason, he's 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA. He's given up 5 hits and 5 walks in 10 1/3 inning, striking out 5.

3.2 - C José Moreno - (A)
Moreno had his worst month of the season in September but was still one of the best hitters for Nampa. The team simply could. not. hit. He'll certainly be back in Nampa next season to try to put things together a bit more.

4.2 - 3B Alex Payne - (A)
Unlike Moreno, Payne hit MUCH better for Nampa in September than in the three months prior to that. He hit .256 for the month, drew some walks, and hit for some power to post a .700 OPS. That's nothing crazy, of course, but is actually above league average. Due to the nature of his abysmal performance earlier in the year and a short September, he finished the year at .184 with a .537 OPS. He'll continue to get playing time in Nampa, so he'll have to show that September is more along the lines of his skillset.

5.2 - 1B Jorge Mejía - (SS-A)
Mejía finished the season with an even .300 batting average, leading Ketchikan in AVG, OBP, SLG, and by extension, OPS. His power was down in September, but his walk rate was up quite a bit. A very solid debut for him. He hasn't hit much in the postseason yet. A few walks but no home runs.

Quick Hits:
7.2 - RF Natsu Ohashi - Ohashi really put things together in September and had his best month, albeit without any home runs. He hit .339 with a .468 OBP and has carried that level of play into the postseason for the Salmon, putting up a .900+ OPS.

8.2 - C Robinson Martínez - Martínez has been throwing out runners at around 25%, which is right around the league average rate. That said, the team saw the fewest attempts of any team in the Alaskan League this year, so runners were not eager to test him. Offensively, he had a miserable September, hitting just .108. He did draw enough walks (12) to post a .295 OBP, and 3 of his 5 hits were for extra bases. He's been something else in the postseason, though. He has 5 extra base hits, including 2 home runs, and a .324 average. His .999 OPS leads the team.

9.2 SP Jude Hollington - Hollington was 1-1 in Septemeber despite posting a 1.86 ERA. He struck out 15 and walked 7 to finish the year with 107 K's and 60 BB's in 115 1/3 innings. He's now 2-0 in 3 postseason starts, with a 1.47 ERA

12.2 SP Will Green - We've been lumping Hollington and Green together in these updates, but Green's 3 wins to finish out the year finally get him his own entry. He finished the season with the Ketchikan lead for wins (10), and ERA (2.20). His last three wins included a handful of unearned runs, but the offense came through in those games. Unlike Hollington, he hasn't had the same level of success in the postseason. He's 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA. The one victory came in the deciding 5th game of the series against Akutan Island. He struggled with his command, but allowed just 1 run on 3 hits over 5 innings to clinch the series win.

It's been a bit of time since the last update. The playoffs have obviously now concluded, and Ketchikan was knocked out of the SS-A playoffs by Wasilla in the Alaska League Championship Series. The Sledge Dogs would go on to lose the Surf and Snow Cup. As for the Salmon, we were pleasantly surprised to have them make it this far.

1.2 - SP Robby Wiggins (SS-A)
After months of recovery, Wiggins has finally been cleared for baseball activities. Of course, it's January, so there aren't any formal baseball activities for him to currently take part in. He's likely to get his first taste of professional competition with single A Nampa in the spring. Despite not having pitched for Ketchikan, the team is eager to get him as much playing time as possible, and with Short Season not starting till after the draft, that means joining the Moccasins.

2.3 - SP Ogai Ono (SS-A)
Ono's one start against Wasilla was one to forget. He gave up 6 runs in 4 2/3 innings, including a 4 spot in the first that the offense would never make up. Ironically, the starter with the awful KK/BB ratio struck out 3 and didn't walk anyone. Perhaps he should've tried harder to miss the strike zone, as he gave up 13 hits, which is more than any team managed in any of the other games.

5.2 - 1B Jorge Mejía - (SS-A)
Mejía was Ketchikan's best hitter against the the Sledge Dogs, hitting .500 with 10 hits. He had 3 doubles and drew 4 walks.

Quick Hits:
7.2 - RF Natsu Ohashi - While Ohashi had been solid in the first two playoff rounds, his bat went cold for the final series. He managed 4 measly singles for a .508 OPS.

8.2 - C Robinson Martínez - Like Ohashi, Martínez's solid hitting in the first two series didn't translate to the contest with Wasilla. He did hit a home run in the 9-0 game 4 win, but only managed a double and a single to go along with it for the whole series.

9.2 SP Jude Hollington - Hollington was superb against the Sledge Dogs. He won game 1 after holding them scoreless as part of a 2-0 win. Unfortunately, he lost the deciding game 5 despite allowing just 1 run. In this series, that meant doom for the Salmon. The only games we won were shutouts.

12.2 SP Will Green - Green pulled off his best Ogai Ono impersonation in Game 4, giving up 3 walks, not striking out anyone, but still holding the opposition scoreless. He came away with a 9-0 win after allowing just 4 hits.

The Robby Wiggins era began this week with the start of the NAFTA season. In his professional debut against the Rapid City Rushmores, he allowed 3 hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He only struck out 2, but all three hits were singles. He was in control, but perhaps a bit tentative. The bullpen coughed up two runs in the bottom of the 9th, but we still held on for a 5-3 victory and Wiggins had his first win.

His second start came against the Utrecht Scholars. The Nampa offense didn't give Wiggins much support, scoring a lone run in the 3rd inning. Wiggins allowed just 2 hits and a walk over his 6 innings of work, but a sacrifice fly scored a run, and the bullpen gave up another 9th inning run to give Utrecht a 2-1 victory.

A year to date after the 2028 draft, the 2029 draft took place.

1.2 - SP Robby Wiggins (A)
Wiggins has been dominating single A hitters this season to the tune of a 1.23 ERA and 0.67 WHIP. With all the new draftees coming into the organization, he's getting moved up to AA Hamilton to make space at the lower levels. He's certainly earned it.

3.2 - C José Moreno - (A)
Moreno's been holding his own at single A Nampa. He's been drawing walks and has improved a bit defensively. Nothing suggesting a promotion quite yet. At this point, he looks like he will make it to AA, but anything beyond that may be wishful thinking.

4.2 - 3B Alex Payne - (A)
Payne's hitting better than last year, but it would be hard not to. He's not playing as well in the field, so he'll continue to play the hot corner for the Moccasins.
