Fargo Dinosaurs News and Notes July 8th

#1 Post by Dinosaurs »

The Fargo Dinosaurs just finished up a three game sweep of the Crystal Lake Sandgnats and in doing so are now tied with Crystal Lake record wise, and both teams trail first place Duluth by two games at the All-Star Break. The Great Lakes Division remains hotly contested, with the division up for grabs, along with a very close wild card race in the Sovereign League thus far.

RP Dan Boorman gets some additional love this week as he was called in to make a start against Crystal Lake to help give recently signed starting pitcher (and former Fargo Dinosaur) Javier Saenz a few extra days as he was recovering from a minor injury that occurred in his last start. Boorman, who has been outstanding in the bullpen this season as a long man and innings eater with a sub 3.00 ERA, pitched well enough to help the Dinosaurs grab the sweep. It is expected that he will return to the bullpen as Saenz should be ready after the All Star break concludes, but considering the rotation ups and downs, he may receive another shot later this season.

1B Carlos Ortega is making a case for best bench hitter in the league. Ortega has struggled in a couple seasons following his breakout rookie season where he was an All-Star and had a 135 OPS+ for the season. After suffering a major injury last season, he saw his starting role taken by the surprising offseason signing of DH Rob Raines. Raines has done his part to validate the signing, and second year 1B Gustavo Lopez is having an MVP type season as well, thus relegating Ortega to a sub role and late inning bat off the bench. It's a good problem to have for the Dinosaurs.
