Duluth Warriors results

#1 Post by ScottH »

Game 1: Newcomer Eric Elliott was outstanding in front of 64,564 fans who braved the 27 degree weather at Doyle Buhl Stadium but the Warrior bats were silent, coming up with only 2 hits in the 2-1 defeat to Shin Seiki. Elliott struck out seven in 6 innings of work, giving up just 4 hits and 1 walk. Elliott earned POG for his effort but did make a mistake defensively that lead to the only run the right-hander would allow. With two outs and a runner on third, Elliott served up a hard ground ball to first baseman Ian Murdoch who, instead of taking the ball to first base himself, decided to let Elliott run over for the 3-1 putout. Elliott would drop the ball, allowing the run to score.
Duluth batters struck out just six times in the contest but could only come up with a leadoff double in the 2nd inning by Naomi Honma and a fifth inning solo homer by Jose Castillo.

Game 2: Manny Gonzales unexpectedly took the hill in game two, apparently because Orlando Trujillo needed seven full days off before he could be ready for his first start of the regular season. Gonzales took the surprise start and threw 98 pitches over five innings, fighting through trouble most of the day with game time temperature again below freezing at 31 degrees, but surrendering just one run.
Duluth unwrapped their new bats today, putting up 15 hits. However, diving catches by Evas outfielders and a nice 6-2-3 double play kept the Warriors from putting together a big inning and a bullpen collapse in the ninth allowed Shin Seiki to skate out of town with two 1-run victories, taking this game 4-3 with three runs in the ninth.

Game 3: Orlando Trujillo really needs to put together a winning season and not taking his assigned start for Game 2 does not put him on solid ground with management. Pitching with the extra recovery time, Trujillo threw a decent game allowing three runs from two homers over six innings. Soetsu Hirai was not good at all in relief and the Warriors bats again were kept in check leading to an 0-3 start for Duluth after this 7-1 loss.

Game 4: Making the most of six hits and 3 walks the Warriors were able to scrape together four runs and claim their first victory. A single run in the seventh inning and a three-run eighth inning supported solid mound work from Bob Hodge, Pedro Gonzalez, and Beau Phillips in the 4-1 victory. Hodge earned POG with his seven innings, Gonzalez worked out of a jam in the eighth, and Phillips threw a 7-pitch ninth to cool off the Clear Lake bats.

Game 5: Jim Fish, back from last season's injury, gave up five runs in the first two innings and that was enough for Clear Lake as they went on to a 7-4 victory. The bats mounted a charge at the end with Noah Hill representing the tying run, but the youngster went down looking to end the game. The lineup put together 10 hits, including 5 extra-base hits but still the ball stays in the park.

Game 6: Eric Elliott was again brilliant on the mound, going 7 innings allowing just one run but another no decision for the right-hander. Pedro Gonzalez would get his second victory in relief and Beau Phillips would pick up his second save throwing a five-pitch ninth inning. A first inning Sean Kirkland home run (second in six games for the team) looked like all Duluth was going to get but in the eight inning the Warriors strung together 4 singles, a sacrifice bunt, and some ill-advised base running to plate two runs and take the 3-2 win.

Just two home runs for the team during six games that saw the wind blowing out from 10-17 mph every game. The opponents hit 6 and weirdly four of them came off the bats of left-handed hitters who hit the ball the opposite way, into the teeth of the wind. Urine and blood analysis requested.

This just in: Herrera, Campos, and Jose Velasquez combined for 1.8 WAR during their opening week of 7 games for AAA Racine. The Duluth Warriors total roster of position players put up a combined 0.5 WAR in their six games. "Big Boys" need to show more punch over the next couple weeks or the constant walk-up song for Duluth hitters will be Duluthian Bob Dylan's, "The Times They Are A Changin'." Hit the dang ball properly and we can switch it to his "Blowin' In The Wind."

Three run homers and complete games make me look like such a better GM. :-B

Game 7: Sean Kirkland doubles and homers picking up 4 rbi and Andy Sharp stays hot with 3 more hits and looks to be enjoying his move to first base. Manny G. strikes out 9 over 7 1/3 innings in a 10-1 victory over Reno.

Game 8: Carbon copy of yesterday with Duluth taking advantage of some mistakes by the Reno defense. Federico Olivas is proving useful with 2 doubles and 4 rbi today while Burnett added 3 hits. Kirkland and Castillo of all people each had triples in this one. Orlando Trujillo gave up a run in the first but avoided further damage and completed 7 innings picking up the win. Joaquin Montoya looks good in back-to-back appearances, finishing the first two games of the 3 game set. Allastair Sellers took a pitch off the wrist and will be lost for a couple weeks. 7-1 victory today.

Game 9: Bob Hodge gave up 2 runs before the seats got warm and that was enough to down the Warriors today as the offense stayed in the hotel. The right hander showed some toughness, staying in to finish 7 innings but Duluth didn't show much fight and fell 3-0.

Game 10: Andres Cruz made his first professional start since A-ball in 2031 and threw a complete game for the Warriors. Sadly, the hitters once again got caught sleeping and the solo homer Cruz allowed in the eighth inning was enough to spoil the day. Have to question the decision to put Perreault in the 5-hole behind Honma. The number of non-competitive at-bats is alarming and if we can not get a little support offensively from a couple positions, measures will need to be taken.

Game 11: After not scoring a single run for 26 consecutive innings we feel very fortunate to win this game. Eric Elliott made his third start and now has a total of 20 innings pitched, carrying a 1.80 ERA and has no decisions. The right-hander went 7 innings, allowing 3 runs and looked like he would be taking a loss in this one until the Warriors got 1 in the 8th and pushed across 4 more in the ninth. Rule 5 selection German Durango threw a four-pitch eighth and when Beau Phillips closed out the ninth, Duluth ended up with the win. The old "put 'em to sleep, then jump on them" offensive philosophy. Same contributors on offense, Hill, Sharp, Olivas, Burnett. We did have an Naomi Honma sighting as he came up with 3 hits.

Game 12: Manny G. again with a masterful outing. 7 2/3 innings allowing one run in the first but nothing after that leading the Warriors to a 3-1 victory and an even 6-6 record. P.G. struck out the only man he faced and Phillips again picked up a save (his fourth) with a little help from Michael Burnett who made a diving catch of a line drive with 2 runners set to score.

With a nine-game homestand coming up after a day off, Duluth needs to put up some wins. Tempe, Okinawa, and Aurora come to town before the Warriors head to Kalamazoo for 3, then return home for 4 against Fargo and 3 with New-Tokyo. Sixteen of the next nineteen at home, this could be the first road marker of the 2033 season. It is vital the offense gets going. We have a few guys not earning their meal money and they need to take a look in the mirror and have a little conversation. It's time to fish or cut bait.

Losing Sellars to injury opens a roster spot and this will be a long night at the Rathskeller for the Warriors front office.

Week 3, 2033

Antonio Herrera made his PEBA debut for the Warriors. Rated the #5 prospect overall, the 20-year-old made a fine showing, finishing the week 7-22 including a scorching home run over the left-center field wall. A hot start in Racine prompted the call-up to Duluth. Over 13 games with the Lakers the third-baseman picked up 25 hits and had slash line of .472/.508/.679. Placing Herrera at third base means Noah Hill will move to the middle of the field and play second base after Otis Perreault proved once again that what happens in spring training, stays in spring training. Perreault's .354 spring average turned into a .175 batting average during 12 regular season games.

Game 13: A 7-3 going into the 9th looked pretty secure but Beau Phillips could not answer the phone to close the game after finishing games on both the 16th and 17th, and the make-shift bullpen coughed up another one. Tempe scored 4 runs in the inning after left-hander Pedro Gonzalez was pulled in favor of righty Joaquin Montoya to face Dewitt Barry with 2-out and 2-on. Let's not do that again (3-run homer, walk, single, single, outfield assist ends inning). We lose in 13.

Game 14: Bob Hodge did not have a good game on the mound, allowing 5 runs in 5 innings of work. Five relievers worked in the game that saw Tempe swing the bats well again and take the game 9-3. Soetsu Hirai was injured after six pitches and has been placed on the injured list.

Game 15: Again, Duluth pitchers had trouble controlling the bats of Tempe, allowing 13 more hits. But 13 hits of their own, including the first career homer of Antonio Herrera as well as his first stolen base, saw the Warriors take a much needed 7-6 victory. Josh Urien, German Durango, and Beau Phillips combined to shut down the Knights for the final 4 1/3 innings to allow Duluth to come from a 6-2 deficit.

Game 16: New series (Okinawa) same story. A first inning homer by Sean Kirkland and a sixth inning double by Greg Stanley put the Warriors in position for another win, leading 2-1 heading to the ninth. Phillips was brought in and could not duplicate his performance from the previous day. Eric Elliott will be looking to finish his own games from now on after the free agent signee has now logged 27 innings over four starts, giving up just 5 earned runs and does not have his first win of the season. He does have four no-decisions. That's frustrating.

Game 17: That's the way it's done fellas. Manny G. with the complete game shutout, giving up just 3 hits, no walks, and striking out 8 with 102 pitches. Still, lack of runs without Honma and Kirkland driving the ball out of the park. If we can't even average 1 homer a game, it will be difficult for us.

Game 18: Geez guys!! After going hitless for five games, Jose Castillo picks up 3 in his last two games including a game winning 2-run homer to take the series from Shisa. Castillo homered in the season opener and has really done very little since, until this winner gave the Warriors a 2-1 victory. Orlando Trujillo worked around some trouble, giving up a run in the second but lasting six innings giving way to Darren Jackson for two, and Pedro Gonzalez to pitch the ninth and get his third victory of the season.

Catching remains an issue with "The Clank Twins" back there getting thumbed because we now have a few guys with a little movement and velocity. Andy Sharp has cooled off, giving room for Ira Murdoch to get some opportunities--word to the wise, Ira. Take advantage quickly. Starting pitchers are 13-18 in Quality starts. Refuse to look at our save percentage right now.

Sergio Campos currently has two home runs at Racine after hitting 43 last year split between A and AA. If the ball starts flying off his bat in Racine we will find at-bats for him in Duluth. Tommy Burris is getting a little frisky down at Medicine Hat. Five homers, 17 rbi, .301/.378/.562 in early going. Remember "Sleepy Bill" Miller, the catcher that reportedly was caught taking naps behind the field tarp last season? He is hitting .345 at Medicine Hat. Talk about a wake up call.

Week 4, 2033 season

One month into the season and the Warriors are at .500 with a 12-12 start. The inability to win games at Doyle Buhl Stadium is frustrating for fans and the club has seven games this next sim to turn around that 6-9 record at home. A tough ask considering the competition will be Fargo (4 games) and Neo-Tokyo (3 games). Winning a series against teams like that would be a sign that Duluth can actually give thought to a run at the playoffs with Fargo being over .500 seven consecutive seasons and Neo-Tokyo making the playoffs in four of the last five. The season is young but eventually you must win the close games and currently the Warriors sit 3-6 in one-run games. Multi-run homers would fix that.

Speaking of homers, we hit nine in the latest sim, doubling the team total. Nice!

Game 19: An early 2-run homer by Reuben van Driel along with Naomi Honma's triple followed by Federico Olivas' single put the Warriors in front 3-1. Aurora quickly struck back with a multi-run inning of their own plating 3 in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Michael Burnett again showed his defensive skills by saving 2 runs with a diving catch in the left-center field gap. Bob Hodge is still winless on the season but it's not like he's been embarrassing, he went 7 1/3 innings in the defeat. German Durango pitched the final 1 2/3. Antonio Herrera has been excellent at third base and Noah Hill looks like he can make all the plays at second. Need a young first baseman to appear, and fill out this young infield group.

Game 20: Sandy Garza got the spot start and then quickly got the bus ticket back to Racine. Lasting just 2 2/3 and giving up six runs will do that to a guy. A solo homer by Greg "No Tools" Stanley in the third got Duluth within 3 of Aurora at 6-3. Leaving the bases loaded in the first and sixth cost the Warriors a couple chances to get back in this one. Strange defensive lapses gave the opponent some free bases that led to additional runs. Get 'em next time.

Game 21: Andres Cruz got locked up in a pitching duel, scattered nine hits over 7 innings and allowed the Warriors to salvage game three with a 4-1 win over Aurora. Duluth batters struck 11 times and could only manage one hit until the seventh when Antonio Herrera struck for a double and Michael Burnett knocked him home with an rbi single putting the home team up 1-0. Aurora chased Cruz in the eighth after tying the score at one but Beau Phillips came on to finish the game and got the win when the Warriors plated three in the 9th. Naomi Honma singled to begin the 9th and Ira Murdoch, pinch-hitting for Olivas, laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt bringing up Noah Hill. The Borealis intentionally walked the left-handed swinging Hill to pitch to the right-handed hitting Herrera who deposited a 1-0 pitch 410 feet away into the left-field bleachers. Herrera drove in three and scored 2 in the 4-1 victory.

Game 22: Holy Cow! Three homers in one game? Who are those guys?
Solo homers in the second by Herrera and Murdoch combined with a two-run shot by Honma in the third helped stake the Warriors to a 6-0 lead. With Eric Elliott on the mound Duluth felt pretty comfortable until they gave up 4 runs in the ninth causing Pedro Gonzalez to come in for the save. Noah Hill picked up three hits in the contest and Elliott pitched shutout ball over 6 1/3 to notch his first win of the season.

Game 23: The most interesting thing in this one was the legs of Olivas and Murdoch. The two guys are 34 years old and both legged out infield hits, both stole a base, and Murdoch scored from second on a hard single to left field. Might need a day off after that effort. Manny G. was not himself today but did make it through 5 1/3 allowing just one run. A hit-by-pitch and 2-out walk caused him problems and really led to him being removed from this one. Sean Kirkland is really searching for his swing right now. Killing us. Manny's walk and hbp along with Darren Jackson walking in the winning run summed up today nicely.

Game 24: Well shut my mouth! Kirkland with a 3-run homer in the opening inning after the first two men walked to start the game put Duluth on a winning course in this one. Kirkland would contribute 4 rbi while Stanley and Castillo would also hit homers. Orlando Trujillo gave up 2 in 7 innings to earn the win. Montoya finished up as the Warriors cruised to a 6-2 victory.

Adding Herrera to the lineup has really added to the club's offense. The 21-year old rookie is currently hit in 9 of his 12 games with a .298 average and a .510 slug and his defensive work at third has been superb. With the addition of Herrera, Noah Hill has added an offensive threat to the second base position and his defense up the middle has been better than expected and it is believed he will get better as he grows into the position. Hill is hitting .282. Another young player taking advantage of his playing time is Greg "No Tools" Stanley who currently has a slash line of .315/.373/.481 with 2 home runs coming in his last 4 games. The only veteran position player truly pulling his weight is Michael Burnett who is hitting .316 in 19 games but it is his center field defense that has been dazzling.

Elliott, Manny G., and Trujillo have all been excellent in their starts while Hodge and Cruz have given the Warriors chances to win almost every time out. Pedro Gonzales will be added to the rotation for a start in the next series to give the top 5 a little breather. The bullpen is still a work in progress. We think we have most of the pieces, putting them together is the right spot is taking a little time.

In an attempt to improve the backstop position, Nobuyori Nakagawa has been brought in to spell Jose Castillo. Hoping to add a defensive element to the catching position, Nakagawa can keep the position if he just handles the pitchers. Free bases are really hurting us in those close games. Note To Self: upgrade the bench coach abilities in off-season. Duluth added five catchers to the organization last week so there are other options if the ball continues to get loose.

Week 5, 2033 season

Game 25: Hill with 2 hits and Sharp with one we could score just one time. Hodge pitched out of jams early but after 5 1/3 innings he had allowed 3 and we just couldn't do anything today. The 3 through 6 hitters combined for 10 strikeouts--that's bad.

Game 26: Fargo pitching has really shutdown our offense but we got 2 and that was enough for Andres Cruz who went 8 1/3 giving up 1 run on 5 hits. His last pitch in the ninth was 95 mph so he's feeling pretty strong right now. Phillips picked up his sixth save thanks to the defensive efforts of Ryosei Saito who ended the game by throwing a runner out at third. With a man on first a ball was hit down the line in right field, Saito cut the ball off on the warning track and fired a strike in the air to third base to cut the man down and end the game. Saito, who had 26 outfield assists in 2031, threw a man out at home in game one of the series while playing center field.

Game 27: We let this one get away. Pedro Gonzalez was solid for 6 2/3 innings giving up just 3 hits and one run before exiting. In the sixth we had bases loaded with nobody out and middle of the order up but came away with just one run. Honma has crushed the ball all season but right at people. His luck has to change soon.

Game 28: Eric Elliott now with 19 consecutive scoreless innings and wins his second game striking out 7 over 7 2/3 innings. Greg Stanley showed some opposite field power taking one out to left field. Don Lawrence isn't in a hurry to give people a day off. Got some tired bats going up to the plate. Split the series 2-2 with Fargo. Could have won 3, could have lost all 4.

Game 29: That was a good scrap. Manny G. gave up back-to-back Jacks in the 7th putting us down 2-1. NT got one in the ninth and Duluth battled back loading the bases twice in the inning but could only push one run across. Ira Murdoch drove one to the RC-gap but it got tracked down to end the game. Kirkland hit a solo homer in the second. The two solos were all they could get off Gonzales, he went
7 2/3 innings, losing for the first time.

Game 30: Walk-off infield hit for Saito after Castillo started the ninth with a double to left. Wow. Missed opportunities for both teams in this one. Greg Stanley continues to produce, clubbing a shot to right field for a 438 foot homer. Phillips with 2 1/3 scoreless to pick up the win, relieving Orlando Trujillo who worked another quality game with 11 ground balls. Actually saw a ball bounce over the fence in this one. Confused me when the ball disappeared and the runners stopped. I think it's great that the opponents get caught up in the walk-off celebration.

Game 31: Couldn't even watch this one. 15-1 offers nothing in the world of entertainment. Sorry Duluthians.

Out-homered 11-3 in the sim and came out 3-4. Very fortunate to have pitching and defense. We have to find some time off for Honma, Hill, and Herrera.
One game under .500 but at home we are 4 games under. I'm ok with that as long as we continue to win 2 of every 3 on the road. Not very likely. Go to Yuma and Madison before returning home to Duluth for a 12 GAME HOME STAND. 34 of our first 49 at home. Sell those tickets and Hamm's before the second half fade hits.

Week 6, 2033 Season

The Warriors are in Yuma for a three game set, looking to string some wins together and get above .500. Currently sitting one game under the squad continues to pitch and play defense but the offense has proven to be just as weak as previous seasons. They have to find a couple more bats for this lineup.

Game 32: Andres Cruz on the mound again for our Warriors who have won three consecutive starts by the Queens, NY native. Cruz again impressed, giving up no runs over 7 1/3 innings while striking out 8 and issuing no walks. Only 5 hits for the offense, including a solo homer off the bat of Noah Hill. The typical late game defensive move in the outfield as Michael Burnett remained on the bench. Of course with the tying run on second the ball found right fielder Greg Stanley who should have been replaced. But Stanley threw the ball to home on the fly and cut down the tying run to preserve the victory. That's just good managing. 2-1 win.

Game 33: Well, we didn't get 5-hit this time. We only got 3 stinkin' hits. Hill with 2 and Honma 1. Kirkland is nowhere to be found. Maybe he's just a second half kind of guy. The game got away early as Pedro Gonzalez continues his Jekyl and Hyde routine. Hill is hitting .288. 0-8 loss.

Game 34: Kirkland doesn't like the bad press and hits a 2-run homer in the first inning. Elliott's scoreless inning streak ends at 22, allowing 2 runs in the fourth. He gets the win and is now 3-0 on the season. Bob Hodge throws just 21 pitches getting the last five outs for his first save of the season. With no hot bat in the lineup we managed nine hits with Saito, Herrera, and Sellers all picking up 2 apiece. 4-2 win.

Game 35: Wait, what just happened? 15 hits in one game by our offense. 2 homers? Honma goes yard the opposite way and collects three hits, and Kirkland adds two hits including his homer. Herrera with three hits and Olivas with 2, wow. Manny Gonzales threw 7 2/3 of 2-hit, no-run ball and is now 4-1 with a 1.08 ERA. 7-0 win

Game 36: Came up short in this one as the offense could only manage 3 hits through 8 innings then doubled that total in the ninth with Herrera knocking in 2 runs with a double and just one out. Burnett grounded hard to first and Sellers lined to short to end it. Trujillo gave up four on 9 hits over seven innings and Hodge again pitched well in relief. Honma is swinging it better now, up to .258. 3-4 loss

Game 37: Out-hit them 8-3 but couldn't get the hit when we needed it and lost 0-2. Dang. Cruz wasn't at his best walking 3 over 6 innings but held them close. Hill starts the game getting hit by pitch then gets hurt taking out the infielder on a force play. Out 4 weeks. Crud!! Now we need to get creative with the roster. Next 30 days without Hill are very important. Better start buying Hamm's 30-packs instead of 6-packs.

Normally going into a 12 game home stand you look forward to it, but we are 9-13 at home so I don't know.

Week 7, 2033 season

Game 38: Both Ira Murdoch and Sean Kirkland homered, but seven scoreless innings between those blasts doomed the Warriors to a 4-2 defeat. Murdoch hit one 454 feet to center field to lead off the bottom of the first and give Duluth their only lead. Pedro Gonzalez pitched into the sixth giving way to Josh Urien who threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Not much action in this one. Toyama hit better than we did and deserved the victory.

Game 39: Gary Murphy makes his PEBA debut in this one and showed well shutting out the Toyama offense over 7 1/3 innings of work. In trouble during the early innings, mostly due to three infield errors by the Warriors defense, the rookie was able to pitch around the miscues and secure a victory for the home team. Murphy allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk before giving way to Bob Hodge, who preserved the victory by getting the final five outs. Murdoch again homered, going the opposite way this time, driving in three runs. Nobuyori Nakagawa contributed three singles and Naomi Honma added two doubles and a homer in the 5-0 win.

Game 40: looks like score early and hold on was the game plan today as the Warriors put up a three-spot in the first and relied on Eric Elliott to do the rest. Elliott allowed just 4 hits over 7 innings allowing Duluth to come away with a 3-2 win and a series win over Toyama. Alastair Sellers drove in 2 with a single and overall there were no extra base hits for the home side. Joaquin Montoya worked the final two innings, striking out three for his first save getting Duluth back to .500 at 20-20.

Game 41: Hmm. Scored 7 runs and Manny Gonzales can't get it done giving up 10 hits over 6 innings, leaving tied 5-5. Jorge Alou gives up a pair of 2-run homers that we can't overcome and we fall 9-7 in front of 56,738. Murdoch, Honma, and Herrera all had 2 hits but the leadoff triple in the first by Murdoch was our only extra base hit of the game

Game 42: Nothing to see here. 4-0 loss.

Game 43: 51,539 to watch us drop another one. 6-1 loss. We have no grit. Soft as cotton. From now on send your wives to her mother's on homestands and pretend you are playing on the road.
11-17 at home???

Re: Duluth Warriors results

#8 Post by ScottH »

Game 44: When we get one-hit against a team struggling just like we are, it takes me back to the first time I lost a game of horse to my brother who is 12 years younger. Gary Murphy gives up a solo homer and Pedro Gonzalez does the same and we lose 2-0. Too many holes remain in the lineup. One stinkin' hit.

Game 45: Eric Elliott picks up win number 5 going 7 innings in a 3-0 win. Elliott struck out 6 in the 100 pitch outing until Jorge Alou relieved, getting the final six outs. Sharp and Honma each had a pair of hits in this one. Again, doing just enough to get by without getting any extra-base hits. It's a dangerous way to live.

Game 46: It has been a while since Duluth saw everyone in the lineup (their own lineup) contribute a hit to the attack. Fourteen hits in this one with Honma and Kirkland picking up 3 apiece and Herrera getting two. Eight extra-base hits for the Warriors as Kirkland gets 2 doubles, Stanley and Van Driel each add a double and Honma, Murdoch, and Castillo hit long balls. Castillo's was a grand slam that untied this one, giving the Warriors a 7-3 lead. Manny Gonzales got pushed around a bit but limited damage, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. Montoya came in for three shutout innings picking up save number 2.

Game 47: Bob Hodge wins in relief of Orlando Trujillo as the Warriors manufacture crooked numbers in three consecutive innings and hold on 7-5. Hodge enters the game in the sixth with two outs and exits with 2 outs in the ninth after giving up a three run homer. Pedro Gonzalez came in for the final out of the game. Reuben van Driel had 2 singles, Herrera a key 2-run single, and Burnett added what turned out to be a vital 2-run double in the eighth. In front of 52,193 people, Duluth stole 4 bases and had a rare sacrifice bunt. Need more of that.

Game 48: Wow! The managerial minds were really spinning in the ninth inning of this one. Bowman enters in the bottom of the ninth to close the deal up 2-0. Ira Murdoch takes him deep with one out. Honma goes to second on an infield error (should have been a hit and error, but...) then steals third with Herrera batting. Tying run at third Herrera watches strike three. Enter the lefty (Vega) to face Sean Kirkland. Duluth bats for Kirkland with Olivas who strikes out. Hopefully Kirkland has received the message. Secretly I was really hoping the righty was still in there when they pinch hit for Kirkland. He really needs to be better. The temperature has warmed up to 60 degrees in Duluth, plus we've already played several home games so maybe the warm weather will help. Maybe?? Cruz gave up 2 solo homers and loses again. The guy has 0.9 run support this season.

Game 49: Thought this was an interesting game to watch. First time in a while the Warrior defense mad some poor plays. Van Driel "baby-armed a throw to first allowing the runner to beat it out and the next guy hits a two-run homer in the first. Twelve hits apiece in this one and we fall 9-5. Honma hitting .118 with men in scoring position is hurting us. He needs to fix that. Looking forward to Hill coming back soon. No medical report but it says 1-2 weeks. With him out van Driel has done an adequate job but nobody has stepped forward to supply much offensive support.

Fourteen game road trip allows the guys to get away again and make up some ground after winning 9 of their first 15 on the road. With the temperatures rising and going to play in climates a bit warmer, maybe the Warriors will enjoy the trip and play some better baseball. Fargo is normally warmer than Duluth by 6-10 degrees in the summer and Toyama, Palm Springs, Clear Lake all will be nicer. We must win some road games 7 of our first 10 on this trip because Clear Lake has been deadly at home (14-5).

More new faces expected for the trip. Currently we are 23-26, 1 game out of third place in the division with Fargo and Clear Lake on this trip.
