Scottish Scoops: 29.017 "July 8-15 Flashback"

Claymores Flashback: July 8-15, 2029

The Scottish Claymores continued their hot streak coming out of the All-Star Break, putting together a 4-1 week to climb within four games of Trans Atlantic Division leader Havana. That winning stretch also put them 6.5 games up over Kentucky and San Juan in the race for the first IL Wild Card spot.

RF Pat Barry and All-Star DH Vincent Powell helped power the Claymores through their series with London, slashing .333/.375/.733 and .308/.400/.692, respectively.

The revamped bullpen also continued its effective play – although Sadakuno Nakagawa did give up his first run as a Claymore during a 4-2 loss to the Underground. It’s hard to complain too much, though, given that his ERA in Scotland now stands at 0.71.

This week, the Scottish welcome a surprisingly strong Amsterdam club (46-46) to the Castle for a three-game series, before traveling south for another four-game tilt with London.

News and Notes

Vincent Powell made himself heard in the first All-Star at-bat of his career: he went yard against Fargo’s Ernesto Molina, sending a fastball 388 feet into the left field stands for a 2-run homer in the top of the 1st inning … CL Ken Fisher also had an eventful appearance, but not in the way he’d hoped: he gave up a 2-run home run to C Tony Parker of Crystal Lake in the bottom of the 8th … SS Naomi Honma, making his second consecutive All-Star appearance, went 0-2 with one strikeout, while 1B Orlando Barrón went 0-1 with one K, one walk, and a run scored. This was Barrón’s first All-Star game … Scottish officials announced on July 15 that they have extended the contract of newly-acquired RP Sadakuno Nakagawa for another two years, at $10 million per season. Scottish fans reacted positively to the news, and GM Vic Caleca was reportedly giving virtual high-fives to front office personnel through his holo-Skype hookup. Caleca, famously, still has not visited Scotland in person, preferring to run the franchise from his suburban Indianapolis office and enclave.

Our position is that, while we’re at a disadvantage to Havana using the plain “vanilla” Nickname Win Valuation formula, the more sophisticated NWV+ analytical tool gives Scotland a clear advantage over Havana. “Dr. Evil” Honma alone gives the Claymores a nicknamical advantage that’s not insubstantial, but in combination with “Bus Driver” Imai ... well, we almost pity the competition.
