The Big Picture
If the Scottish didn’t have to play good teams, they’d be a dominant force in the Imperial League.

Since they do have to play good teams, though, the best you can say is that the Claymores … play in the Imperial League.

Here’s why we say that.

Through April and the first two weeks of May, the Claymores have played four teams with winning records: New Orleans (.632); Havana (.632); West Virginia (.579); and San Juan (.526).

The only one of those four teams the Scottish have a winning record against is West Virginia, at 4-2. The Claymores have split the four games they’ve played against San Juan, but are 1-5 against New Orleans and 0-3 against Havana.

Combined, that’s a 7-12 (.368) record against winning teams.

Against losing teams, on the other hand, Scotland is 12-7 (.631). They’re 4-2 against Arlington, 3-1 against Amsterdam; 2-1 against Florida; and 3-3 against Kentucky.

Conclusion: The Claymores are what their .500 record says they are: a middle of the pack team. So far, they’ve taken care of business against losing clubs, but taken it on the chin against New Orleans and Havana, the class of the IL.

Quick recommendation to the Scottish: the next time the Trendsetters or Leones come up on the schedule, feign a stomach illness …

Player(s) of the Week
For the second week in a row, we sing the praises of CF Jack Flynn – the same Jack Flynn who hit .173 for April and suffered through an 0-21 streak. Well, as we pointed in our last edition of the Edinburgh News, Flynn slashed .308/.308/.423 to start the month of May. And last week? Try .412/.444/.765. His season slash line still isn’t anything to write home about (.234/.286/.363), but at least it’s no longer a horror show …

Our second player in the spotlight is 3B Bob Swift, who joined the organization on April 12 through a minor league free agent contract. He was promoted to the big league team after a week in the minors, and started at third immediately. So far, he’s been a solid performer, flashing the power he showed in six seasons at New Orleans: four homers in 14 games and a slash line of .255/.367/.510. Welcome to Scotland, Bob. Enjoy the haggis!

Game of the Week
We’ll go with the May 12, 4-hit gem pitched by Francisco Robles against the Arlington Bureaucrats. The Claymores jumped on top in the first inning when DH Yosuke Imai doubled into the right field corner, then took third when LF José Guillén lined a single between first and second. A fly to medium center field by RF Vincent Powell brought Imai home, and Scotland had a lead it would never relinquish, thanks to lights-out pitching by Robles. The final score was 6-1, and Robles got the complete-game victory, striking out four batters and walking just one. The Player of the Game was modest afterwards, telling reporters: “If I go out there and help the team, that’s all you can do.” And on this day, it was more than enough …

Stat of the Week
A couple of weeks ago, we reviewed a pitching measurement, developed by sabermatician and fantasy baseball expert Ron Shandler, called Pure Quality Starts.

For a refresher on how it’s figured, go here and scroll down to "Stat of the Week." But for now, just remember that pitchers can score from a low of 0 to a high of 5.

Here are a couple of useful stats you can derive from a pitcher's PQS log: the Dominant Start Pct. and the Disastrous Start Pct.

A dominant start is one in which a pitcher scores either a 4 or 5, while a disastrous one is a game in which a pitcher receives either a 0 or 1.

Here’s how the Scottish starters are doing, through the second week of May:

Francisco Robles: Dom., 50%; Dis. 0%
Carlos Pérez: Dom., 43%; Dis. 0%
Kazuhiko Nishiyama: Dom., 29%; Dis., 29%
Jorge Vasquez: Dom., 33%; Dis. 33%
Terry Dumont: Dom., 25%; Dis., 25%
Soichiro Ogawa: Dom., 40%; Dis., 60%

A few things leap out at you from that chart: First, the steady excellence of Robles, who hasn’t yet had a truly terrible game this season. Second, Nishiyama is off to a wobbly start. Third, Ogawa was either brilliant or horrendous in the games he started. For now, he’s toiling in long relief in the Scottish bullpen, but don’t be too surprised to see him make some more starts as the season goes along …
