Trade between SS and TOY

#1 Post by Evas »

SS receives:
CL Vincente Medina
RF Hugh Howell (AAA)

TOY receives:
RP Juro Sumita
RP Hideyori Tanaka
2B John Dickson
SP Richard Higgins(INT)

Please place Medina in my PEBA pen as a MR and Howell on my DFA list.

Thanks for the fun talks, Dylan!

Confirmed.

Love Medina, but need to cash in. Sumita is a decent RP who just turned 27 this year and has a chance to improve a little more. Tanaka tore his flexor tendon last season but was successful before that. He will have another shot in Toyama but is still in arbitration if things don't work out. Dickson is an end of the season loan to replace the ailing Escobido and Skip Jordan while he has his surgery. Higgins is the real prize as I build on my collection of young pitchers. My scout loves him and even if he can't develop his Change-up, he could be a solid reliever.

Medina was great, but there's no use keeping around for a rebuild. Howell has been living on the bubble in Toyama and I just don't foresee him taking a spot in the active roster here.

Thanks for the negotiations Kevin!

This one was just a good fit for both sides.

Medina is a solid reliever who can deliver for me in 2027. His having an semi-reasonable option for 2028 is a good thing for me too as I have a number guys from my pen who will likely see FA this off season.

Howell is a nice option guy to have for me. His splits might play well in my park if I need to use him in a platoon role due to injury.

It's kind of sad to move Sumita (2021 1st round pick) and Tanaka (2016 supplemental pick). Both have long histories in my organization and I have put a ton of time and resources in to both, especially Tanaka whom I sent to WB to add a knucke ball. But they are just not performing right now and I can't afford to have 2 under-performing arms in my pen with this division being so tight. They're both out of options, so they had to go.

Same thing with Dickson. He was solid in 2026, but that was largely BABIP driven. He came down to earth HARD in 2027. With 2B Errol Landry getting an extended look in PEBA, there really wasn't a great place for him on the roster. Better to use that salary on Medina.

My scouts like Higgins, but don't love him. But they've been wrong many many times before, so who knows. I'm glad different scouts have different opinions. It makes deals like this possible.
