Underground Week In Review

#1 Post by Underground »

Welcome to the first ever Underground Week In Review, where we quickly review the week that was for the Underground and their minor league affiliates.

July 10-17, 2028

Personnel Notes
The Underground fired two staff personnel from their AA affiliate, pitching coach Jose Gomez and hitting coach Sen Inoue. 39 year old Bryan Cruz was hired as the new hitting coach, while 44 year old Jim Shirley was hired as pitching coach.

The Underground also fired their A affiliate pitching coach Dough Harrel and hired 39 year old Misao Kodo in replacement.

Contract Notes
The Underground signed two British high school prospects to their International Complex, 16 year old Ethan Dodgson and 16 year old Ellis Thackwray.
The Underground signed catcher Tatsukichi Araki to a minor league contract, assigned to S A affiliate.

Milestone Watch
Marcos Gonzalez - Currently 3 saves away from 200 career
Clark Snow - Currently 1 strikeout away from 1000 career

PEBA Notes
The Underground went 4-1 on the week, including a three-game sweep of the reeling Amsterdam Lions. The team improved to an even 46-46 on the season. The Underground made up 4 games in the wild vard race, and now sit just a game back of a potential wildcard berth.

Martin Ramirez stayed hot, recording his second consecutive shutout start. In those starts Ramirez has pitched 13 innings allowing 8 hits, no runs, and striking out 19.

Catcher Miguel Angel-Galvez stroked a grand slam for his 10th HR of the year. In total for the week he had 6 hits and 5 RBI.

AAA notes
Leeds went 3-0 on the week, scoring no less than 5 runs in each of their wins. The Rhinos are second in the Europe and Islands division and 1 game back of the wild card.

24 year old Colin Boucher made his AAA debut after being called up on July 10. He played in one game, collecting 1 hit in 3 at bats and scoring two runs.

AA notes
The Beatles went 2-4 on the week, continuing their disappointing season which sees them sitting at just a .419 win percentage.

Several players called up this week made their AA ball debuts:
Antonio Mesegue, played in 4 games. He had 3 hits, all doubles, and 1 RBI for a .214 AVG.
Arturo Rodriguez, played in 5 games. He had 5 hits, 1HR, 4 RBI for a .238 AVG
Rene Lems, played in 4 games. He had 1 hit and struck out 6 times for a .071 AVG.

A notes
The Bears had a disappointing 2-4 week, but remain in first place in the Intercontinental Division with a 52-24 record.

No players made their single A debuts this week, though recently demoted Ernie McKee played his first two games for Birmingham this season, filling in as closer. He gave up runs in both appearances, good for a 13.50 ERA in 2.0 IP and earned a loss in one decision. Not great, Ernie. Not great.

S-A Notes
Wasila had a nightmarish week, going 1-5. The team was shut out twice and gave up 8+ runs three times.

Tatsukichi Araki made his organizational debut following signing a minor league contract. In one game he was held hitless, but collected an RBI
Felix Rangel made his first professional appearance following a call-up from the international complex. In 6 games he batted .250 with 3 RBI and a double.

We probably missed some stuff, but that is a pretty good look at the Underground week that was!

Great round-up, Evan!

I had a brief moment where I had considered bringing Galvez back into the Aurora fold... but it was brief... I always did like him, it was a shame that the trade that sent him to Duluth ended up as a kind of dud...

Thanks for the update Evan! I was care-taking London prior to your arrival. I hope I didn't screw them up too bad for you!

July 17-23, 2028

Contract Notes
SP Felix Reyes signed a 1 year extension worth $880,000
SS Tony Cuevas signed a 4 year, $42,440,000 extension

Milestone Watch
Congratulations SP Clark Snow on reaching 1000 career strikeouts!

PEBA Notes
The Underground went 1-5 in a six game home and home series against Arlington. The lone bright spot was a 6-5 win in which Clark Snow reached 1000 career strikeouts with a 6 strikeout effort in 6.0 innings of work.

With the horrendous week in the books, London fell 4 games back of the Wild Card chase.

AAA Notes
Leeds went 2-5 on the week. Despite the poor end results, the team kept it close, losing four of the games by 2 runs or less including a pair of 1-0 losses.

In his second week of AAA action, LF Colin Boucher collected 2 additional hits and knocked in the first two RBI of his AAA career.

AA Notes
Liverpool went 3-4 on the week. Though still not a great effort, it is technically an improvement from their 2-4 pace last week.

Antonio Mesegue continues to make the most of his first AA callup, now hitting .256 with 8 RBI in 11 games with the team.
Arturo Rodriguez has had mixed results in his first 12 AA games, hitting just .217 but has shown a knack for timely hitting, managing 7 RBI in that time.
Reme Lems has struggled mightily in his 10 games since being called up, shuffling to just a .121 average and 9 strikeouts, with no RBI. Rumors are swirling that he may be sent back down to single A Birmingham.

A Notes
The first place Birmingham Bears had a strong week, going 3-0. All three games were shutouts for the Bears, whose pitchers feasted on the Bismarck batters.

Ernie McKee bounced back from his nightmarish debut on the team last week, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings and collecting three saves.
Pete Blaquiere improved to 9-1 on the season as a starter, tossing 7 innings of scoreless ball with 10 strikeouts.

S-A Notes
Wasila's struggles from last week continued as the team went 2-4. Improvement from last week however, as they were only shutout once and game up 8+ runs only once!

Felix Rangel continues to impress in his second week since being called up from his unknown Panamanian league, elevating his batting average to .306 while adding another RBI and several doubles.

Apologies for missing last week's review, I was traveling the two nights that I would normally have had to write it. I do want to make a few contract announcements from that week:

P David Tucker signed a 2 year extension worth $2,012,000
CF Luis Cervantes signed a 1 year, $5,000,000 extension
P Zhi Yo signed a 1 year, $890,000 extension
P Lee Mitchell signed a 1 year, $2,410,000 extension

But without further ado, onto this week which was (spoilers) pretty terrible for the organization.

July 31 - August 7, 2028

Transactions
3B Kevin Reed was demoted to single A Birmingham

PEBA notes
The Underground continued to tumble, going 1-5 on the week. Their only win was a 1-0 affair that went into 11 innings. Clark Snow pitched 8 scoreless in the no-decision.

London's pitching was strong all week, earning a cumulative 2.89 ERA. Martin Ramirez led the way, with a 1.88 ERA in two starts (14.3 IP). Baseball is a cruel mistress however, and his record for the week was 0-1. Despite the impressive numbers, London starters went a combined 0-3 for the week, with the lone win going to reliever Akira Endo and reliever Marcos Gonzalez collecting 2 losses.

London's batting continued to be their downfall, with the team hitting just 0.168 for the week. The team mustered a measly 8 runs. Shigenobu Kawakami was the lone bright spot, collecting 7 hits in 20 at bats (.350) including two doubles and two walks. Sadly, he did not record any RBI. Meanwhile, 4 players with 18+ at bats managed to collect averages below .200.

London continues to fade from the Wildcard race, now 7 games back, and will need a blistering pace for the remainder of summer to have any chance at the dance.

AAA Notes
Leeds went 3-4 on the week, basically par for the course as a 51-53 team. Despite being in second place in their division, the team is 7.5 games back of first and somehow also 6.5 games back of the wildcard. Yikes.

AA Notes
Liverpool went 2-5 on the week. At just a .425 win percentage for the season, this team has struggled to string together any wins. With a weekly ERA of 4.40 it's not hard to imagine why they are struggling.

24 year old starter Jochen Haazens had himself a week though, earning a 0.82 ERA in 11 innings for a 1-1 record. He struck out 13 and walked just 3.

A Notes
The first place Birmingham Bears held serve this week, going 3-3. The low-light of the week was a 14-1 drubbing, while the highlight came the following day in the form of a 1-0 win in which 19 year old Edward Newington threw 8 scoreless.

Two players who started every game this week collected batting averages north of .400. Jerry Jones (.471) also walked 7 times for an OBP of .640, stole 5 times, and knocked in 2 runs. Rene Lems (.421) continues to make the most of his recent demotion, including 8 walks and 4 stolen bases to go with 4 RBI.

S-A Notes
Wasila had what might be their first winning week of the season, going 4-2. Worth mentioning the team was no-hit by Cold Bay for one of their losses. For the week, the team sported an impressive 1.36 ERA which was able to make up for the team batting a meager .198.

Highly touted prospect Duane Moss started twice this week, with a 2.03 ERA in 13.3 innings pitched the organization is quite pleased with his results. Control continues to be an area of needed improvement however, as he allowed 7 walks.

CF Felix Rangel remains inconsistent as he is adjusting to professional ball since his signing from the international complex. He batted just .136 last week, but showed some patience working 4 walks. In 23 games he is batting .213.
