Quietly, it begins...

The Cajun Chronicles

April 12th 2021
New Orleans, Louisiana

Opening day is always a highly anticipated occasion for any baseball fan. New players get used to their surroundings, Spring Training concludes, games now have meaning, rosters are trimmed of their excess parts, and fans get to see what their team is really made of. The hustle and bustle that accompanies the arrival of April can generate enough adrenaline to last for weeks.

However, for a team that has been well known for it’s characters and antics, the New Orleans Trendsetters’ winter has been highlighted by... mystery.

At the end of last season, General Manager Paul Tanner decided to leave the club, and team owner Jack Cobb said they would carefully select their new GM. “There is no reason to rush these things.” he said to the press near the end of the season. In fact, Cobb himself took over GM duties to a limited degree while the team searched for someone to take on the role full-time.

The search brought the club to Japan in November, where reports surfaced that they negotiated with several individuals during the LRS-PEBA merger, but those talks were unsuccessful. The search continued well into the winter months, with very little information made public. All the while, the team remained noticeably unchanged over the off-season.

Finally, as the chaos of spring training drew near, a new General Manager was announced: Reg LeBlanc.

“Who?”

A lot of fans were not sure how to react. “I have no idea who this guy is, to be honest.” said long-time fan Ken Payette, “I mean, I trust that the team did it’s homework. I hope so, it took them long enough to find the guy!”

But, who is he? Not much is known of him so far, except for a few details: he is a 34-year-old Canadian who apparently spent his teen years pitching on local teams, trying to perfect the ultimate deception pitch: a submarine knuckler. Despite studying hours of pitching footage and endless practice, the pitch never became his ticket to fame. However, the endless studying transferred itself into an Accounting degree, a love of numbers, and an interest in sabermetrics. LeBlanc also became well-known as a quiet but very effective manager and GM on the local Independant circuit throughout his twenties, and now makes the big leap to the big show. Time will tell what the future holds, and if those skills will be able to turn around a team that has not had a winning record in a decade.

Due to the relative inactivity of the team over the off-season, fans arrived on Opening Day versus Kentucky and noticed a roster that looked very familiar to them: slugger Tsumemasa Morimoto at first base, star player Dave Nash in left field, Jack Collins behind the plate, and a pitching situation that is still as murky as Bayou water.

But, fast forward a week into the season, and the team now sits on a 4-2 record, after one of the most underwhelming and frankly bizarre off-seasons in the team’s history. It is still too early to tell how the season will unfold, but, quietly, it begins...
