2024 week 1 in review.

#1 Post by Duane »

Week 1 gives us a glimpse of the future along with an impressive start to the 2024 campaign.

Without long time CF Miguel Ping Yanez (now in Florida), the Thoroughbreds go 5 and 2 in week 1, splitting the 4-game set with Florida and sweeping a 3-gamer from New Orleans (both division foes). Power rankings put Kentucky as 2nd to the evil Aurora from the SL (slimy league). The roster has some new faces this year - Rule V pick Dwight Martin will be pushing for playing time, Pitchers Roberto Camacho, former Rule V Ricardo Martínez, and rookie Raúl Pacheco, along with 1B Ira Murdoch, 2b Stewart Abbott will all be getting a chance to help KyT over the playoff hump.

Pitcher of the week:
2nd year starter Shoichi Shimizu had a fantastic start to his season going 2 - 0 over 14 innings. The lefty had a complete game 4-hit shutout against Florida in the second game of the season and followed that up with 5 innings 3 runs against New Orleans. The 2014 second round pick for Ky, Shimizu had a good first year in Kentucky and is slotted as number 2 starter.

Hitter of the week:
Rookie Ira Murdoch had a very impressive first week and receives the honors as KyT hitter of the week. Ira managed not only his first career home run, and RBIs, but also smashed at .381 to pace KyT to the top of the division. In his first game (against Florida) Ira went 2 for 3 from the 8-hole.

Injury update:
Rookie starter Roberto Camacho put a scare into the Ky front office as he lasted just 1 batter (2 pitches) in his start against New Orleans and was removed with a strained oblique. The training staff is being very cautious with the 2019 first round selection as had Tommy John surgery in 2021.

Artie Major completed his DL stint and has been assigned to AAA Jefferson County for rehab over the next couple of weeks.
