Park signs with Kentucky

#1 Post by Thoroughbreds »

New Kentucky GM Sean Torgerson didn't waste any time making a splash in the PEBA. He shocked the baseball world and surprised many Kentucky fans by signing pitcher Ju-Hyung Park to a 113 million dollar contract - which works out to over 18 million dollars per season for the next 6 years.

This is a huge risk and a massive paycheck for a soon to be 30 year old pitcher who has spent eight years in the PEBA, almost exclusively as a reliever. Even though he has been a very solid reliever over the past three seasons it looks like Kentucky is going to use him as a starter.

"Currently he's penciled in and as our number three starter and we're going to rely on him heavily for some big Innings this year." explained GM Sean Torgerson. "We know he has the stamina to pitch at least six or seven Innings per game and be an effective starter."

Considering Park's previous career high of innings pitched is 87.2 and that was 5 years ago, people are wondering on how Torgerson came to this conclusion.

"We have money to spend and we are always going to be aggressive in trying to plough forward in an attempt to become a better team," said Torgerson.
There are more than a few people wondering if this 118 million dollars has made them any better at all, besides adding some depth to the rotation and/or improving the bullpen.

If all goes according to plan Park will join Michael Doyle and Chris Brown at the top end of the rotation. Shigenobi Taguchi, Brian Guttieriez, Jose Mora and Nelson Alvarado will battle it out for the last 2 spots.

Torgerson has shown that he is not going to sit back and hope to make the playoffs, he is going to do all he can. But this move does have an extremely high risk associated to it. There will be many eyes on Park, especially in the early going to see if he can live up to the hype...or at lease some of that massive contract. How will he hold up to the scrutiny?

This probably signals the end of the Thoroughbreds activity in free agency this season although they are said to be in the market for a first baseman. Brad Davis is definitely still a valuable piece to the lineup, but at 39 years old, Kentucky is looking for someone who could take his place down the road.

I think Park will be fine in the rotation and a solid #3. We weren't willing to give him that much cash with our pitching depth to continue as a reliever. Hope he works out well whenever he's not pitching against us!

Thanks - hopefully he works out as a starter - I needed to upgrade/add depth to the rotation.

Otherwise he is a very pricey setup man!
