2029: Steaming down the tracks : Edition 2 Roster Fights

#1 Post by Alleghenies »

There are only 2 weeks left of Spring Training and the Alleghenies have 6 spots open with about 14 people in the running (Yoshihisa Tanaka, Javier Drake and Jack Mundy are on for backups and extra practice). The team is expected to go with 12 pitchers and 14 position players, but that could become 11/15 depending on how things at the very end shake out.

Here are the position players in a battle:
Héctor Prado – Hector was signed as a non-roster FA and came into camp a very long shot. He is hitting the ball ok in his few appearances and might be the defense the team has been looking for at 1b. It is rumored this next week he will get many more PA’s to see if he deserves a spot.
Ryosei Ohayahsi - Everyone is familiar with Ryosei as he has been with the team a couple seasons now. In the offseason he worked on his contact and the team hopes that translates into more production. That is the one thing that has been lacking from his game. He will have to really flop the next 2 weeks not to make the bench.
Sherwood Alldritt – A scout favorite, but not the coaches favorite. For some reason he is getting no PT and looks to have no shot at making the roster. The scouting department is banging the drums about his ability, but no one will listen. I wouldn’t bet a $1 on him making the team.
Wynn Berry – Wynn was the first signing of the offseason for the Alleghenies and it was meant to help out Henry Davis when they have an injury. The problem is it led to a couple mistakes in Rule 5 draft and 2 players weren’t protected because of him. It is not that he is failing in spring as much as the team has changed priorities and now he seems to be facing up hill battle. Chances are 50/50.
Joe Kenny – Joe was given a 30-day promise to be on the roster, but the team never expected him to really make it out of training. Well he has turned heads over the last few weeks and looks to be challenging Raúl García for the last OF spot on the team. At the moment he has about a 40% chance, but another good week will drastically increase those odds.
Raúl García – Raúl was penciled in as a starter before the offseason began and then the big signing of Don Mercer happened. Since then he has been in a small funk and if he doesn’t snap out of it, he will be playing in the minors with Javier Drake this year. The team still has big plans for Raúl, but thinks they just may run out of room at the beginning. His odds are about 60% to make the team and like Kenny the next few weeks will make or break his whole season.

Prediction : Héctor Prado, Ryosei Ohayashi and Raúl García.

Here are the pitchers battling:
José Moreno – The 27-year old lefty was signed to a non-roster contract (with 30-day promise) with very little hopes of making the team. Well in his first 3.2 innings he has thoroughly impressed the team and has been put on the radar to make the last spot. If he keeps his command up he can beat out anyone. Chances 70%.
Ron Latour – Like Moreno, he is a non-roster signee with a promise. Latour is coming over from Aurora where he always put up good numbers and never gave up many runs. This spring hasn’t been the worst for Ron, but if he is going to make the team he needs to be a bit better. The team is hoping he reduces the hits he is giving up, but at the same time they are impressed by his reduction of walks (1 so far). Currently 60%.
Ron Wells – Ron has been super patient with the team since being drafted in the expansion draft. He is now 27 and before the offseason started was expected to be in the bullpen this year. Well things are a bit murkier now that all the roster moves have been made and not because of anything Ron has done wrong, but the fact he has an option year. This spring he has looked fantastic and has done nothing to show that he deserves to be sent down. Without the option 95%, with the option 70%.
David López – David is a guy who would be more appreciated if he wasn’t so overpaid. He hasn’t logged many innings yet, but the manager said this week they are throwing him out there to see what he can do. He has the ability to be very good, let’s see if he can get it to translate. The team is rumored to be currently in talks with a team involving giving up a 2nd round pick for them to take on his contract. Currently 100% due to his contract, 30% without contract, 50% trade.
Fred Wilton – See Ron Wells problem. At least Fred can say he pitched on the team last year and did fabulous. Then the playoffs came and Fred showed his flaws. This spring with 5 lefties in the pen vying for probably 2 spots, Fred knows he has to be on his best and so far he is. In 3 innings he hasn’t allowed a run and only 1 hit. Fred will make the team if Lopéz is traded most likely, but if he isn’t Fred is destined for minors. 95% Lopéz gone, 15% Lopéz stays.
Luis Puente – Luis was given the same promise contract that Latour and Moreno got and most people thought it was just a courtesy for an ex-player. Well so far jokes on those people. Puente has come to spring dealing. In 6 innings he is averaging 10.5 K’s per/9 and has only walked 2 guys. After the last 2 years of control problems, it looks like Luis has found it again. The team is keeping a close eye on his progress as he has moved into position to make the team. If he continues not walking people over the next 2 weeks, he will earn a spot in the pen. Currently 75%
Koki Watanabe – Koki was signed on a promise, but he is mostly an insurance policy for an injury to any current starting pitchers. The problem is the team thinks he will opt out if he doesn’t make it in 30 days, so currently he is being used in long relief. In 3.1 innings he has shown a great deal of promise and the team thinks they may have gotten a bargain for the veteran. Currently 80%
Victor Latham– Victor like all the other non-roster pitchers, has a promise contract. The team wasn’t sure what to expect from Victor as he has been injured a bunch over the last few years. Well the first game almost got the veteran cut as he showed that he had nothing in the tank. After a talk within the organization, he got 1 more week to show he wasn’t washed up. Well that week came and he is still on the team. He showed much improvement in each game over the last. He still has an uphill battle to make the team though as his chances are at 35%.

Prediction: Watanabe, Puente, Wells

LOL. It would have been that way before training camp, not so much now. I wrote the truth about the guys and their odds. Though one of the guys odds on the list is now at 0 because I cut him.
