Longshoremen Not Yet Mathematically Eliminated

April 10, 2023 - Normally after one sim, it at least feels like the Longshoremen have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. At 3-3, and with the Sovereign League's inaugural 2023 Player of the Week, it's a decidedly upbeat debut for this new blog.

Series 1 vs. Toyama: The Longshoremen won the opener but lost the next two games, as the super-secret 'Death to Lefties' lineup claimed Clayton Lewis as its first pelt on the wall, knocking him out figuratively (4 hits, 3 runs, including 2 HR in 1 IP) and literally (Gonzalo Gonzalez' 2nd inning HBP ignited a bench-clearing brawl that got Lewis and Gonzalez tossed from the game and suspended). A one-run loss in Game 2 and a wild 12-10 loss in Game 3 gave the Wind Dancers the series win. Gabriel Martinez tied records in the final game, hitting 4 doubles and going 5-6 with 4 RBI. The fifth hit was a triple. Martinez claimed the PotW Award referenced above. This series was supposed to be a 4-game set, but a rainout gave the Longshoremen an unexpected rest day before facing the Sandgnats.

Series 2 vs. Crystal Lake: Jose Jimenez (7 IP, 3 ER) and Kokei Yamashita (5.6 IP, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) secured the Longshoremen's first series win of the season with solid performances in the series' first two games. The chance for a sweep was thwarted as the Sandgnats pushed two across in the top of the 9th to win a game in which the Longhshoremen had battled back from an Armando Gallegos washout start (1.3 IP, 7 ER, 2 HR).

The Longshoremen ended the first week of action leading the Sovereign League in home runs and runs scored, but near the bottom of the league in runs allowed.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Rain, Rain Go Away

April 17, 2023 - Rain, bullpen woes, and an odd pitching decision marred the second sim week of games, as the Longshoremen suffered their second rainout in as many weeks. This time, with the rainout coming in the first game of the series rather than the first,a double-header was scheduled for the very next day. Alfonso Romero started both games, after having his first scheduled start skipped thanks to last week's rainout. I guess that's fair in some sense. :shake:

Series 3 vs. Kalamazoo: Played in raw, rainy conditions, the Romero Doubleheader was a split, as the Longshoremen offense couldn't muster any offense in the afternoon affair against Seu Tong, who tossed a 3-hit shutout. The Longshoremen pounded three homers in the nightcap, with Gordon Fuller's second home run of the game, a 2-run shot in the bottom of the 8th, won the game for the Longshoremen, who had trailed 4-3 prior to that swing. The two-homer game was Fuller's second of the season. Jose Jimenez was unable to replicate the success of his first start, getting pulled in the fourth inning of the rubber match despite being spotted to a 5-2 lead after 2 innings. The Longshoremen gave up 14 runs in the first five innings of the 14-5 loss.

Series 4 at Duluth: Canton won a wild opener, scoring 6 in the 9th inning to extend a 4-3 lead to 10-3, only to see the Warriors score 5 in the bottom half off of Benoit Faucher and Julian Olivares, the last 4 on a grand slam by Miguel Angel Galvez. Antonio Murillo came in to record the last out for a cheap save. The series ended with two 1-run losses.

SPECIAL EDITION: SP W/L

SPECIAL EDITION - SP WON/LOSS

April 17, 2023 - OK, so we're going to start doing something I've wanted to do for a while - track team W/L for different starting pitchers. Does it mean anything? I dunno. Let's revisit at the end of the season:

#1: Kokei Yamashita: 3-0
#2: Armando Gallegos: 0-3
#3: Carlos Perez: 0-2
#4: Alfonso Romero: 1-1
#5: Jose Jimenez: 1-1

A few observations, with it being painfully early:

- Yamashita's 3-0 is deserved; indeed, his 'real' record is 3-0, too. His ERA is 2.16 and his FIP is 3.14.
- Gallegos has been awful in one start, bad in another, and good in a third (7 IP, 2 ER). Hopefully he's starting to turn it around.
- Perez has deserved better, as he took the loss in his one quality start.
- Alfonso Romero famously started both ends of a double-header. Combined, he went 6&2/3, giving up 3 hits, 1 earned, walking 4 and striking out 7. The jury is still out on the former #3 overall pick.
- Jose Jimenez's 1-1 record (the same as his 'real' record) is deserved, as he won his quality start (7 IP, 3 ER) and lost his 3+ IP, 6 ER effort.

In Yamashita and Romero, the Longshoremen have two starters (arguably their most promising two starters) who have '3' staminas.

A Game of Inches

A Game of Inches

April 24, 2023 - One and two run wins and losses were the order of the week, and they evened out, as the Longshoremen turned in their second 3-3 sim in the season's first three sims.

Series 5 at Aurora: After dropping the opener thanks to a blown save by the bullpen, the Longshoremen held on to leads in the last two games to win the series from the defending PEBA champs.

Series 6 at Tempe: The Longshoremen split 11 inning bookends, losing the first game of the series on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eleventh, and winning the finale on a 2-run homer by Peyton Bishop in the top of the eleventh to avoid the sweep. The middle game of the series was a 4-3 Tempe win against Carlos Perez.[/quote]

The First Winning Sim

The First Winning Sim

May 1, 2023 - Is it time to start wondering how good the offense might be? With this week's 5-1 result, the Longshoremen have played 8 series, and won four of them. Of those eight series, 5 of them have been against last year's playoff teams, and the Longshoremen have won 3 of those series. They've not been swept yet, and the garnered their first series sweep this week against Yuma. Here's the recap:

Series 7 vs. Yuma: It had been an uneven start for the 2022 Wild Card Bulldozers. A surprisingly convincing Longshoremen sweep at Svab Memorial was not what anyone expected. The Longshoremen offense pummeled the Bulldozers' starting pitchers, knocking them out in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th innings, rapping out 40 hits, and and scoring 22 runs in the three game series. The first game was an odd station-to-station game for the Longshoremen, who got 17 hits, 16 of them singles, with Michael Demers' second inning triple the only extra-base knock. The turquoise and gray returned to their slugging ways for the balance of the series, slugging 5 homers in the last two games.

Series 8 vs Bakersfield: After dropping the opener 9-6 thanks to another poor start by Carlos Perez, the Longshoremen got two one-run wins, with a four-run seventh inning turning the trick in the series' middle game, and Alfonso Romero, Benoit Faucher, Pat Miller, and Hirohisa Nartia making one run stand up in the Longshoremen's first shutout of the season in the season finale.

The Longshoremen are 3rd in the Sovereign in runs scored, winners of 8 of their last 11, and are absolutely pounding left-handed starting pitchers going 6-2 in games started by those sinister characters. Let's check the starting pitchers in the maybe important team W/L category:

#1: Kokei Yamashita: 6-0
#2: Armando Gallegos: 1-4
#3: Carlos Perez: 0-4
#4: Alfonso Romero: 4-1
#5: Jose Jimenez: 2-2

So to date, two low pitch count youngsters are carrying the rotation (Yamashita and Romero), a veteran flyballer (Jimenez) is holding serve despite leading the staff in quality starts (3/4), and veteran and former ace Gallegos has pitched poorly, and in bad luck on the occasions where he has pitched well.

Not the Second Winning Sim

May 8, 2023 - So this is how it's going to go. We brag about the offense last sim, and the next sim, we get shutout twice and score under three runs per game. Here's the recap:

Series 9 vs. Kalamazoo: A surprisingly adept start by struggling SP Carlos Perez salvages one game after still-struggling SP Armando Gallegos gets knocked out early in the first game and the offense takes a powder in Game 2, losing 4-0.

Series 10 @ Okinawa: Two one-run losses sandwiched around a 7-0 shutout behind Kokei Yamashita and Pat Miller preceded an 11-0 whitewashing in the series finale. The starting rotation deserved better than a 3-1 series loss here, as Alfonso Romero turned in a solid, if too short start (4.7, 1 ER) and Armando Gallegos bounced back with a workmanlike 8 IP, 3 ER performance.

Antonio Murillo, who appeared to have finally figured it out in a short relief role, was lost for the season with a radial nerve decompression problem. He becomes the second pitcher from the planned preseason bullpen to go down for the campaign, joining Katsunosuki Hasegawa, who was disabled during spring training. Sigh.

The Sim In Which Michael Demers Died

May 15, 2023 -

Image
Michael Demers, August 19, 1990 - May 9, 2023*

* Not really - but his baseball career is over.

Series 11 vs. Tempe: A gorgeous May day turned black, as star center fielder Michael Demers dove to catch a line drive on the warning track in the top of the first, his head hitting the base of the wall and fracturing his skull in a CEI. Drat. Clearly upset by the loss of their team leader, the Longshoremen lost the third game of the four game series a day later, getting pummeled 21-3, only to bounce back and achieve a series split with an extra-inning, 3-2 win in the finale. This series will also likely be notable as the last time the Longshoremen glimpsed a winning record, slipping under the waves to a 16-17 record with the infamous Demers CEI game.

Series 10 vs Palm Springs: This series started well, with a second straight 3-2 extra inning victory behind a strong 7 inning start from Armando Gallegos and 5 shutout innings from the pen. Unfortunately, 5-1 and 11-5 losses to end the series left the Longshoremen at 18-20 on the year.

Demers ends his PEBA career with a 255/347/352 slash stat line, 37 career HR and 181 career SB. He averaged just a shade under 4.0 WAR per game during his three full season with the Longshoremen, and was off to a blistering 318/380/509 start on 2023. He was a one-time All-Star and a one time All-Leather Award winner.

A good start James, if you fancy a proper blog banner talk to Mike of Aurora he might well be able to knock up something if you give him some ideas. He's a bit busy at times but he said he'll be willing to help when time permits
