Indeed!

Above the sky is the airless void, where you can consign position players who don't hit above the Mendoza line, starting pitchers who spend more time in the showers than on the mound, and relievers who provide nothing remotely close to relief.

In space, no one can hear your players complain about heading for the waiver wire ...

Firing both my hitting and pitching coaches seems to have paid off so far. The boys batted a combined .304 this sim with 32 RBI. From the mound we combined for a very nice 2.83 ERA. This resulted in a 5-1 sim which let me climb back to .500 mid way through May. I'll take it.

Granted Manchester is a team in transition right now and most teams are teeing off against them, but winning the Arlington series on the road is something to feel good about.

Yeah, beating Arlington is no mean feat.

I’m not surprised to see London coming around. Lest we forget, the Underground were in the wildcard race last season until the very end. They’re not that far away from being a post-season threat.

One step forward, two steps back here in Toyama. We have a strong sim then follow it up with a horrid sim. The pitching staff is all over the place this season and I'm hoping they settle down a bit. SP Francois Gosselin has rebounded in the best possible way with a solid 1.65ERA while only giving up 0.4 HR/9. Our bats are doing as expected though some are struggling a bit. I'm happy with our ability to get on base, but we lack a true run producer or power hitter that can drive in our quick runners. Next sim should be a reality check with Fargo and Duluth on the horizon.

Some neat stuff down in NAFTA this week...

Chula Vista's (BAK) Juan Moreno threw 10 innings of no-hit ball against Escondido.

Our #5 starter, Jose Martinez (NAM) actually go a no-hitter thanks to the offense managing a run.
We also had a 1 hitter against Fort Wayne. That game was started by Robby Wiggins, who threw 7.1 innings, striking out 7 and walking none. Unsurprisingly, it was his best start of the year. He now has a matching 0.58 ERA and 0.58 WHIP

Looking ahead, the Leones enter a 20 game streak of divisional games. Should be a lot of fun to watch as the IL TA is a real scrap this season. This stretch will likely set the tone of the division race for us through mid-August. Not much room for a fumble from a Havana club that's taken a step back from last year's level of performance. If we can keep it close it sets the table up for that divisional stretch in August that should really bring some impactful games.

The Borealis continue their mediocre play - bookended by a 15-inning win over Duluth and a 1-out away from a win turned to loss to Fargo. Amongst the Neat and Not So Neat between those bookends:

- Jose Torres continues his strong start, 9-20 with a homer on the week, and .325 for the season with 8 HR and 19 RBI, and he's been the offensive Neat thus far...
- 'Fido' has struggled thus far, but has slowly boosted his average up to .257, with a nice boost from this weeks 9-21, with a homer. With Gutierrez coming off a .125 week and a .204 for the season, we may see Castro regain the starting catcher position - Neat for 'Fido', Not So for Domingo...
- Nick Heath nay have posted a Not So Neat 6-27, but of those 6 hits were a pair of doubles and a pair of homers - netting 6 runs and 4 RBI... There's some Neatness in that...
- Not So Neats for the hitters go out to Paul Carlisle (3-23), Roy Duke (3-19) and River Pope (2-11), who was looking good, until he was thrust into the starting line-up, and has since tanked... Duke's numbers continue to depress (.203), but his solid defense (2 E in 83 chances) and his speed ( 4-5 in SB) will keep the Rule 5, 25-year old on the roster... for now...
- On the pitching side, Hugh Jones continues to defy odds. After his first two starts were shaky, he's pitched much better - and this weeks start, Aurora's 5-3 win over Duluth, was his longest: 7.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R (1 ER), 3 K, 3 BB - dropping his ERA in half, from the 9.35 after that initial start v BAK ( 4 IP, 5 R) to 4.60... Scouts may continue to be confounded, but for the Aurora bottom line it qualifies as a Neat...
- Also in the Surprising Neat category, rookie Jesus Solis has a pair of poor starts (that had his ERA at 5.25), but in back-to-back starts against Fargo he's gone 6 IP (7 H, 3 R) in last weeks 3-2 loss, and 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R in this weeks 5-3 win, dropping his ERA to 4.03... Like 'Mister, Mister' Jones, this is a Surprising Neat...
- Neatness in the 'Pen: Mike Monroe (5.2 IP), Lagerveld (3 IP), Gray (3 IP) all with multiple scoreless innings... Bullpen Nost So Neats: Bob Burns' blown save to Fargo, with 2-out and none on in the 9th... Newly acquired Bob Erickson, two outings in the bag, runs allowed in each...
- Not So Neat out of the Rotation out to everyone not names Jones or Solis: Esquivel had 2 GS, and allowed 12 H in 13 IP and 8 runs, while Turner (6 IP, 4 R) and 'Chief' (5.2, 5 R) also looked vulnerable...

Down on the Farm
- By far the Neatest element of the week was last years 34th overall selection, RF Stewart Arundale. After a .323/.380/.462 at Gatineau over 130 AB, he was promoted to AAA Thornton this past week, and he continues to impress: 6-16 with 3-2Bs. He's also 7-9 in the SB department and 1 E in 87 TC this season... It was said when he was drafted that Aurora Brass saw him much as they saw Ferringo, and a few more weeks like this, and like Pedro, a first full pro season promotion would be likely - especially if Aurora continues to lack DH contributions...
- Henry Cluett had a couple of bad starts early, but he's righted his ship, and he followed up last weeks pair of shut-outs (one a CG, the other 8.1 IP), he went 7 innings, and allowed 2-hits and 2-runs (a 2-out, 1-on HR in the 1st)... With 41 K and 7 BB in 59 IP, Cluett's 0.81 WHIP and 1.82 ERA are looking Super Neat - and continues to look like a solid acquisition...

So, Mike. Are you still pessimistic about the Borealis ending the season with a winning record, or are you keeping hope alive? Seems there are definitely some bright spots here: Jones, Solis, Torres ...

I am Vic - Torres started strong last year, then faded some... Jones and Solis are both unknowns, for the long haul - one will be back at AAA in 4 in-game week's, the other maybe by Thursday's sim, as Imhoff will be done rehabbing, and 'Tugboat' has about 3 weeks to go...

Week 2 with my new hitting and pitching coaches:

Hitting: Facing much tougher opposition, the Underground batted .262 and knocked in 25 RBI in 6 games. Overall this is still much higher than the season average (.243) and therefore I remain pleased with my new hitting coach. Most importantly, Luis Cervantes has hit for .300 and .400 in the two weeks since, and has raised his overall average to .192 in the process.

Pitching: On the pitching side, the wheels came off the bus. The team sported a 5.16 ERA, which is awful. No starters earned a victory, though much of this falls on the bullpen which earned 2 of the team's 4 losses this week. Zhi Yo was on thin ice going into the week with an ERA over 8.00, and he turned in 5.3 innings this week with a 15.19 ERA so, well, he's headed to AAA. Lee Mitchell only lasted 3.3 innings and fell to 2-5...the experiment in trying to get him to regain his stamina as a starter may be headed to a failed conclusion.
